About Baltimore
Baltimore is among the more enjoyable stops on the east coast, and its closely knit neighborhoods and historic quarters provide an engaging backdrop to many diverse attractions, especially those along its celebrated waterfront , like the Inner Harbor's National Aquarium and the Pier 6 Concert Pavilion and Power Plant entertainment complex. The city also boasts top-rated museums , like the Walters Art Museum and the child-oriented, interactive Port Discovery, which cover everything from fine arts through black history to urban archeology.
Baltimore Attractions
For a real family adventure, check out the National Aquarium in the Inner Harbor, with an amazing collection of more than 10,000 specimens and 560 species. You'll encounter everything from the gigantic pacific octopus to a blue poison dart frog, and don't forget humpback whales, monkeys, sharks, puffins and more. There's even a simulated rain forest with piranha and sloths, and a coral reef with vividly colored tropical fish.
Baltimore Activities
Let the kids go wild at Port Discovery, the Kid-Powered Museum. With three floors of interactive exhibits, there's something for everyone.
Learn the history of baseball and tour Babe Ruth's Birthplace and Museum, listed as a national historic site.
Enjoy a great Italian meal in Baltimore's own Little Italy and then take a stroll through the quaint streets.
Catch an IMAX movie or planetarium show at the Maryland Science Center.
Visit the Baltimore Zoo, home to more than 2,000 exotic animals in a wooded, 180-acre setting.
Walk through Federal Hill, a neighborhood on the historic register, and the Cross Street Market.
Crisfield is a city in Somerset County, Maryland, United States, located on the Tangier Sound, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. The population was 2,726 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. Crisfield has the distinction of being the southernmost incorporated city in Maryland.
The site of today's Crisfield was initially a small fishing village called Annemessex Neck. During European colonization, it was renamed Somers Cove, after Benjamin Summers. When the business potential for seafood was discovered, John W. Crisfield decided to bring the Pennsylvania Railroad to Crisfield, and the quiet fishing town grew. Crisfield is now known as the "Seafood Capital of the World".The city's success was so great that the train soot and oyster shells prompted the extension of the city's land into the marshes. City residents often claim that the downtown area is literally built atop oyster shells.
Caught, but content in a lovely time warp Welcome to St. Michaels, the quaint and quiet colonial village that
"fooled the British in the War of 1812." Come stroll our tree-lined lanes and brick walkways in the steps of countless pirates and patriots... captains and carpetbaggers. Our three hundred year history lives through the architecture that showcases the town's charm--Georgian, Federalist, and Tidewater telescope colonials; Queen Anne, Edwardian, and Victorian treatures; and gingerbread-trimmed store fronts of all kinds.
Picnic in Muskrat Park with its lovely view of the harbor, or explore St. Mary's Square and Museum on the "Green"...the site where the very first settlers built their log cabins in the late 1600s. You'll enjoy the antique and art galleries, the decoy carvers' workshops, the gift, craft, and fashion boutiques. Even the two hardware stores have some surprises.
If it's warm when you get there, cool off with a hand-dipped ice cream cone. If you arrive with the geese in the cool weather, warm up with something from the bar at the local hangout of St. Michaels' watermen. And when hunger sets in, any of several really fine restaurants will serve up extraordinary eastern shore delicacies.
Incidentally, we fooled the British by hanging lanters in the tallest
trees above the town to confuse Royal Navy gunners in their predawn
bombardment of St. Michaels' ships and shipyards...a source of great
irritation to the British Admiralty in that War. Today, however, we
welcome all visitors by land or sea including British ones without
cannons.
ANNAPOLIS -- Established in 1649, Annapolis is a scenic town -- and it virtually brims over with history. Most of the well-preserved older part was built in the mid-18th century. We recommend that you contemplate at least a two-night stay, beginning with visits to the Government House (the governor's home), 18th-century Hammond-Harwood House (widely thought of as one of the very finest remaining colonial houses, this Georgian-style mansion is an complete must for anyone
interested in historic homes) and the Maryland State House (constructed in 1772, it's the oldest still in use in the U.S. and has the largest wooden dome in the country). Annapolis is conceivably best known for the U.S. Naval Academy. A tour
of the campus takes in Bancroft Hall (the world's largest dormitory), the chapel (where you'll find beautiful Tiffany windows and the crypt of legendary naval hero John Paul Jones) and the Tecumseh figurehead (a source of Annapolis tradition for generations). Try to be there at noon during school sessions to see the midshipmen march in formation. If you're there in July, you definitely must witness Induction Day at the academy, when freshmen are sworn in. The city's narrow streets can get congested, and parking often seems unattainable. Our suggestion: walk about -- it's really a beautiful place. We recommend that you see, amid the historic buildings and sites, the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden (a six-acre/2.5-hectare
botanical garden), the Old Treasury Building, Chase-Lloyd House (with its uniquecantilevered stairway), the William Paca House and Garden
(the 18th-century estate of the Maryland governor who signed the
Declarationof Independence -- the restoration of the garden has been a
exceptionally impressive feat), the Reynolds Tavern and old St. Ann's
Church.
The Annapolis Hall of Records houses memorabilia belonging to Herbert
Frisbee, the African-American explorer who accompanied Adm. Robert
Peary to the North Pole. Contemplate also the Banneker-Douglass Museum
of Afro-American Life and History and the National Colonial Farm
Museum.
