You've got to hand it to the ingenuity and sense of humour of a people who invented bungee jumping to get their yams in on time. Inyeug (Mystery) Island is uninhabited, making it Vanuatu's most private island bungalow retreat. If you want to relax on white sand beaches surrounded by coral reefs then this is a good destination. Since nobody lives on Mystery Island, the bungalows are self catering and you need to bring at least some of your food and beverages with you. Local produce is available on the mainland and there are basic stores there too.
One of the largest barrier reefs in the world shines emerald and and turquoise through the crystal-clear waters of New Caledonia. The town of Noumea clusters around a central square and a few tall palms give the Place des Cocotiers restaurants, bistros and chic French boutiques line the streets. And Indonesian, Tahitian and Chinese shops sell everything from shell necklaces to incense burners. Bustling with life, this small, thriving town is the French Riviera of the South Pacific.
