About Wizard Hill, San Cristobal
Located in the highlands of San Cristóbal at an altitude of 700-meters, El Junco Lagoon is the only freshwater lake in the Galapagos. As you rise from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno to El Junco, you can see marked differences in climatic composition and, as a result, vegetative zones. The highland vegetation comprising of Miconia bushes and endemic tree ferns surrounds the lake, contributing to a lush landscape. Here you can also observe white-cheeked pintails and common gallinules.
Another common visitor site on the west side of San Cristóbal is Cerro Brujo (Wizard Hill), a white-sand beach (accessible by wet landing) that is the home to Sally Lightfoot crabs, marine iguanas, and sea lions.
Nearly all of the species found on this island are visible at Punta Suarez. Tame mocking birds, uncommon red and green -trimmed marine iguanas, both blue-footed and masked boobies, and albatross colonies.
Here is Post Office Bay...where 18th century whalers opened an unofficial post office in a barrel. Its been in service ever since and the cost of postage has not gone up a single cent. Here is where the flamingos nest on towers of mud, but not before showing off their exquisite pink color circling the lagoon and landing.
Punta Moreno is located on the north coast of Isabela Island between the volcano Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul volcano. The distance of the trail is about 2100 meters, and runs along a lava flow into a complex of coastal lagoons.
The main attractions at Punta Moreno are coastal lagoons amid black lava flows where there are several species of birds. It has a panoramic view of three volcanoes, the most active of the Galapagos that are Sierra Negra, Cerro Azul of Isabela Island and La Cumbre of Fernandina Island.
During W.W.II Baltra was established as a US Air Force Base. Crews stationed at Baltra patrolled the Pacific for enemy submarines, and protected the mouth of the Panama Canal. After the war the facilities were given to the government of Ecuador. Today the island continues as an official military base.
