About Havana
Havana (La Habana) is the largest city in the Caribbean and the center of all things Cuban. Despite its turbulent history, Havana suffered little damage in the wars and revolutions, and stands today much as it was built. There's an air of faded glory about the city as big 50s and 60s American automobiles still dominate the streets and paint and plaster peel off everywhere. The city is peppered with glorious Spanish colonial architecture, much of which is under restoration. Havana has a swinging nightlife, with cinemas, historic theatres, cabarets, nightclubs and music venues that will exhaust even the most hardened campaigner.
Havana sizzles by night. The weekly Cartelera entertainment newspaper is stuffed with cinema and theatre programs, and listings of galleries, bars, nightclubs and cultural events. Much of the cinema is in English and foreign theatre groups often appear at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba. The Teatro Nacional is also a regular venue of the National Symphony Orchestra and there's a good cafe here which is open all night for disco dancing and live salsa music. If you'd rather do the crawl, Old Havana and Vedado are a wash of bars and nightclubs. There are atmospheric hideaways and plush cabarets on almost every street, but there are a few joints to keep your eye out for. La Bodeguita del Medio off the Plaza de la Catedral is Havana's most celebrated bar. Since Hemingway bent his elbow here, La Bodeguita has become de rigeur, and Salvador Allende, Fidel Castro, Harry Belafonte and Nat King Cole have all left their
autographs on the wall. El Floridita, another Hemingway hangout, is on the tour-bus circuit but this is where frozen daiquiris were invented in the 1920s so you might like to pay your respects. The best and biggest nightclub in Havana is the Tropicana. Each night, more than 200 stillettoed and scantily-clad beauties put on enormous headdresses and
take to the stage. The showstopper is the preposterous Dance of the Chandeliers, where a train of dancers, sporting illuminated lamps on their heads, appears on stage linked together by electrical cords.
Dressing up in Havana isn't only about getting into the spirit of things, it's often about getting in the front door. At all the cabarets and many of the nightclubs minimum dress requirements are strictly enforced. This means definitely no shorts or t-shirts, and preferably pants other than jeans.
Twenty-one-square-mile Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, an unspoiled archipelago that lies in the path of welcome trade winds. Try fishing, snorkeling and sailing excursions out of Road Towns serene harbor or horseback riding in the shadow of Mount Sage.
Tortola Attractions
Rent a private boat and forge your way out to Norman Isle, a former pirate den across Drake Channel from Tortola and real life deserted island today. Legend has it that Norman Isle served as Robert Louis Stevenson's inspiration for Treasure Island. You can venture into caves, some of which are excellent snorkeling spots. Or hike to Spy Glass Hill. This is a journey you'll never forget.
Tortola Activities
Sage Mountain National Park is located over 1700 ft. above sea level, and contains the British Virgin Islands' highest peak.
Trails lead through a primeval rainforest overlooking neighboring islets.
The wreck of the HMS Rhone is a 310-foot ship that sank in 1867 near Salt Island. Its remains have become a fascinating underwater habitat for marine life and it is known as a premier dive spot in the Caribbean. Get the party started with a visit to Bomba's Shack at Cappoon's Bay. Live entertainment, rum punch and infamous full moon parties.
Recently ranked #4 in a list of "Best Destination Cities" in North America by Travel and Leisure readers, Charleston offers something for everyone, from its beautiful beaches to a fascinating historic district. With great hotels, interesting tours, and fabulous restaurants, Charleston draws visitors from far and near and makes them feel welcome with a charm and grace that is rarely found anymore.
Charleston Attractions
Tour the historic section of Charleston and visit St. Michael's Church and the Joseph Manigault House. City tours by horse carriage and tours to nearby Boone Hall Plantation are also available.
Charleston Activities
Your visit to Charleston isn't complete without experiencing the ships, planes and exhibits of Patriots Point. The museum centerpiece is the massive aircraft carrier YORKTOWN, one of the most decorated and famous warships of World War II. Go deep inside the vessels to experience what life was like for the sailors who lived, fought and sometimes paid the ultimate price for preserving our nation's freedom.
The South Carolina Aquarium is a regional resource inspiring conservation by excelling in education, and in the care, display, and study of aquatic life.
Take a walking tour of Charleston's pre-revolution dungeon tour, an uncensored look at Charleston's past, a nighttime tour of one of the oldest graveyards in the country or an inside look at Charleston's haunted Old City Jail.
Here the beaches come in three colors: pink, black or white. And in the waters around Bonaire and neighboring Klein Bonaire, undersea treasures are protected in a National Marine Park. Inland, the landscape in the south is flat and desert-like; it's green and hilly in the north. A leisurely stroll in Kralendijk takes you to food markets, shops and the charming waterfront promenade.
Dutch settlers came here in the 1630s, about the same time they sailed through the Verazzano Narrows to Manhattan, bringing with them original red-tile roofs, first used on the trade ships as ballast and later incorporated into the architecture of Willemstad. Much of the original colonial structures remain, but this historic city is constantly reinventing itself and the government monument foundation is always busy restoring buildings in one urban neighborhood or another. The salty air causes what is called "wall cancer" which causes the ancient abodes to continually crumble over time. The city is cut in two by Santa Anna Bay. On one side is Punda (the point)—crammed with shops, restaurants, monuments, and markets and a new museum retracing its colorful history. And on the other side is Otrobanda (literally meaning the "other side"), with lots of narrow, winding streets and alleyways (called "steekjes" in Dutch), full of private homes notable for their picturesque gables and Dutch-influenced designs. In recent years the ongoing regeneration of Otrobanda has been apparent, marked by a surge in development of new hotels, restaurants, and shops; the rebirth, concentrated near the waterfront, was spearheaded by the creation of the elaborate Kura Hulanda complex. There are three ways to cross the bay: by car over the Juliana Bridge; by foot over the Queen Emma pontoon bridge (locally called "The Swinging Old Lady"); or by free ferry, which runs when the pontoon bridge is swung open for passing ships. All the major hotels outside town offer free shuttle service to town once or twice daily. Shuttles coming from the Otrobanda side leave you at Riffort. From here it's a short walk north to the foot of the pontoon bridge. Shuttles coming from the Punda side leave you near the main entrance to Ft. Amsterdam.
The easternmost of the Caribbean islands, Barbados is also one of the most beautiful. Opt for one of the many tours available, such as the popular sojourn to tropical Andromeda Gardens. They are situated on a boulder-strewn hillside high above the sea, where ocean waters dramatically thunder against the giant rocks below. The beaches on the exclusive east coast are superb, and you may choose to head straight for one and spend the entire day relaxing. Of course, there is always shopping in Bridgetown.
Bridgetown Attractions
For the ultimate day of fun-in-the-sun Barbados-style, cruise on the MV Harbour to a spectacular sandy beach. Snorkel on reefs teeming with tropical fish. Enjoy the rope swing, sun tanning or walking on the beach. Cruise back along the scenic coast while dancing the calypso or limbo, or just relax on deck.
Bridgetown Activities
Climb into a comfortable safari-rigged Land Rover® and prepare yourself for adventure. Visit places inaccessible by tour bus, such as Gun Hill Signal Station, and go off-road through Joe's River Tropical Rain Forest.
Adventure is in the air and so is the smell of a thousand orchids on this fragrant tour of Orchid World and Fisherpond House.
Enjoy breathtaking panoramic views and learn about island culture and history on a comprehensive island tour of Barbados.
