About Havana
Havana (La Habana) is the largest city in the Caribbean and the center of all things Cuban. Despite its turbulent history, Havana suffered little damage in the wars and revolutions, and stands today much as it was built. There's an air of faded glory about the city as big 50s and 60s American automobiles still dominate the streets and paint and plaster peel off everywhere. The city is peppered with glorious Spanish colonial architecture, much of which is under restoration. Havana has a swinging nightlife, with cinemas, historic theatres, cabarets, nightclubs and music venues that will exhaust even the most hardened campaigner.
Havana sizzles by night. The weekly Cartelera entertainment newspaper is stuffed with cinema and theatre programs, and listings of galleries, bars, nightclubs and cultural events. Much of the cinema is in English and foreign theatre groups often appear at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba. The Teatro Nacional is also a regular venue of the National Symphony Orchestra and there's a good cafe here which is open all night for disco dancing and live salsa music. If you'd rather do the crawl, Old Havana and Vedado are a wash of bars and nightclubs. There are atmospheric hideaways and plush cabarets on almost every street, but there are a few joints to keep your eye out for. La Bodeguita del Medio off the Plaza de la Catedral is Havana's most celebrated bar. Since Hemingway bent his elbow here, La Bodeguita has become de rigeur, and Salvador Allende, Fidel Castro, Harry Belafonte and Nat King Cole have all left their
autographs on the wall. El Floridita, another Hemingway hangout, is on the tour-bus circuit but this is where frozen daiquiris were invented in the 1920s so you might like to pay your respects. The best and biggest nightclub in Havana is the Tropicana. Each night, more than 200 stillettoed and scantily-clad beauties put on enormous headdresses and
take to the stage. The showstopper is the preposterous Dance of the Chandeliers, where a train of dancers, sporting illuminated lamps on their heads, appears on stage linked together by electrical cords.
Dressing up in Havana isn't only about getting into the spirit of things, it's often about getting in the front door. At all the cabarets and many of the nightclubs minimum dress requirements are strictly enforced. This means definitely no shorts or t-shirts, and preferably pants other than jeans.
Beautiful St John is the smallest of the three U.S. Virgin Islands. It covers an area of only 28 square miles, two-thirds of which is devoted to the Virgin Islands National Park. Although the history of the island is long and interesting, the features that make St John so special are its magnificent beaches (Trunk Bay is considered to be one of the ten most beautiful in the world) and its underwater snorkel trail.
St. John Island Attractions
There are tours of the National Park by safari bus or jeep, and you'll find the drivers take a special pride in the beauty of St. John. One well known taxi personality is Miss Lucy Smith, her wagon can be identified by cow's horns entwined with flowers on the hood. (Due to her Popularity you must Book with her by reservation). There is a standard rate for all tours, with stops at key observation points. Island guides will charm you with ancient folklore and authentic knowledge of the island. You'll also see glimpses of abandoned 18th-century sugar plantations, especially along the Reef Bay trail. And you can even visit one -- Estate Annaberg.
You can easily explore all of Gustavia during a two-hour stroll. Some shops close from noon to 3 or 4, so plan lunch accordingly, but stores stay open past 7 in the evening. Parking in Gustavia is a challenge, especially during vacation times. A good spot to park is rue de la République, alongside the catamarans, yachts, and sailboats.
The skyline of St. John's, the capital and largest city of Antigua and Barbuda, is dominated by the magnificently evocative white baroque towers of St. John's Cathedral. Built in 1845, the church is now in its third incarnation, as earthquakes in 1683 and in 1745 destroyed the previous structures. The towers are the first sight of Antigua for about half of the island's visitors each year, many of whom arrive by boat. With its recently completed cruise ship dock and several hotels, St. John's is a lively hub for shopping and dining.
St. John's Attractions
Discover Antigua's past at Nelson's Dockyard, a restored working dockyard. In this tropical Colonial Williamsburg, you can visit many of the original colonial buildings and get a real feel for the history of the place.
St. John's Activities
Sail aboard a catamaran and take in a few hours of breathtaking scenery. You'll depart for the northwest coast of Antigua to a specially selected anchorage, where you'll enjoy snorkeling and water skiing. Then move on to a beautiful sandy beach for more fun in the water.
Experience the rich history, unique culture and tropical flora of St. John's on an informative Antigua Island Tour.
Discover some of Antigua's most beautiful secret spots and small, uninhabited islands by kayak. You'll make a stop for a swim, and if you are quiet, you may spot the sea turtles, frigate birds, whistling ducks, endangered fallow deer and flying fish that inhabit the area.
Authentic Caribbean foods at Basseterre, and a peaceful setting virtually untouched by tourism are among St Kitts most enchanting features. For breathtaking views, visit Brimstone Hill Fort, an impressive construction atop Mt Liamuiga that is one of the wonders of the Caribbean.
Basseterre Attractions
Whether you're a history buff or just want to take in the scenery, be sure to visit the 350-year-old estate, Romney Manor, once owned by a British earl. The beautiful grounds include magnificent gardens, exotic plants and an amazing African Saman tree, which covers half an acre and is believed to be as old as the estate itself.
Basseterre Activities
Explore Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park. Climb to the top of the main hill to take in amazing views of St. Eustatius and Sandy Point Town.
Walk through Independence Square. Now a small public park, it was built in 1790 for slave auctions and council meetings.
Visit St. George's Cathedral. While originally christened Notre Dame in 1670 by the French, it was destroyed more than once and was most recently rebuilt in 1869 in typical Georgian style.
Great Harbour is the main anchorage on Jost Van Dyke and the center for nightlife on this beautiful island. The holding for anchors in Great Harbour can be tricky and now there are some mooring balls to make life easier. Great Harbour has the island’s police station and customs and immigration office. It’s “main road” is just a sandy strip. A small beach, dotted with dinghy docks, runs the length of the bay.
