About Dublin
Most of the city's 18th century buildings have been restored, taking you back to bygone days. Explore monastic ruins and estates and shop for woolens and other local wares.
Dublin Attractions
For a closer look at Ireland's most famous export, visit Irish Whiskey Corner. This 90-year-old warehouse flat has been converted into a museum, featuring a presentation about the making of Irish Whiskey. Visitors receive a complimentary tasting.
Dublin Activities
Visit Powerscourt Estate and Gardens, set on 34,000 acres along the River Dargle. Finished in 1875, this garden took over 30 years to complete. Admire the Italian and Japanese gardens and the circular terraces that descend to Triton Lake with its 100-foot fountain guarded by winged horses.
Visit St. Patrick's Cathedral, said to have been the site where St. Patrick baptized converts in 450 A.D.
Explore Dublin's history, both tragic and glorious, with haunting memories of great patriots, statesmen, scientists and scholars.
Check out the National Gallery, home to more than 2,000 exhibits, including a major collection of Irish landscape paintings.
Go back in time at the Dubliana exhibit, featuring a historical portrayal of life in Dublin during the medieval period from 1170 to 1540, including a scale model of Dublin in the 1500s.
Fishguard is a small fishing village and ferry port that many people will see only when passing through on their way to Britain or Ireland. The main South Britain ferry service runs to Rosslare, Ireland. Fishguard is still a lovely village offering many restaurants, cafes and beds for weary travelers.
The southern strip of the Cornish coast holds a string of medieval harbor towns. Some of these appear somewhat tarnished due to various degrees of commercialization, but there are still spots where one can experience the best of Cornwall. The estuary town of Fowey (pronounced Foy) is one.
Fowey Activities
St. Fimbarrus Church - Fowey’s steep layout centers around this church, which features a distinctive 15th-century building and marks the traditional end of the ancient 30-mile Saints’ Way from Padstow.
Place House - This extravagant building with a victorian gothic tower grafted on to the 15th-century fortified building stands just behind the church.
The Esplanade - This popular walkway leads to a footpath which eventually provides access to some splendid walks around the coast.
Lostwithiel - Just a few miles out of Fowey lies this appealing mixture of georgian houses and dark cobbled passageways, with a peculiar Breton-inspired octagonal spire on St. Bartholomew’s church. Looming over this old market town is Restormel Castle, a shale-built shell of a circular keep that crowns a hill one mile north of Lostwithiel.
Aptly named Belle-Ile-en-Mer is the largest of France’s Atlantic islands, located just off the Brittany coast. It’s a popular summer holiday spot, with rolling countryside and broad beaches, miles of hiking trails along the shoreline cliffs and even romantic castle ruins above the protected harbor of Le Palais.
Sixty-one miles up the Garonne River, lies the port of Bordeaux, the capital of France´s wine country. The Romans were the first to introduce grapes into the region, and by the 14th century Bordeaux was producing over one million cases a year. Journey through the hilly countryside to the picturesque village of St Emillion and taste the wines that have made this region famous.
Bordeaux Attractions
Surrounding Bordeaux are the world-renowned vineyards and wine châteaux. Visitors from all over the globe come here to learn about the wine-making process - from growing the grapes to the harvesting, fermentation and bottling of top-quality wines. The city’s single most important economic activity is centered around the marketing and exporting of the region’s prestigious wines. Many travelers come here for the single purpose of visiting the cellars of esteemed châteaux and sampling the product. However, one has to keep in mind, that the title "château" can mean anything from a palatial residence to a basic winery. There are thousands of wine châteaux scattered through the countryside, ranging from very modest family establishments to celebrated properties – but all are dedicated to producing the area’s renowned wines.
Bordeaux Activities
Place de la Bourse - You can’t miss this impressive square just opposite from the pier. The square was laid out in the mid-18th century and is flanked by the old Customs House and the Stock Exchange.
Rue Ste. Catherine - This half-mile-long pedestrian street leads through the Old Town’s major shopping area and marks the beginning of the elegant 18th-century city.
Old Town - Discover the charm of the Old Town with its narrow streets and quaint squares lined by typical Bordelais mansions that have been tastefully renovated. Today many are occupied by small shops, restaurants and cafés.
St. André Cathédrale - You may want to visit this imposing Gothic cathedral. Its historic fame dates to 1137 when Eleanor of Aquitaine was married in this church to the future King Louis VII.
Grand Théâtre - Facing the Place de la Comédie stands this neo-classical theater. Its elegant exterior is ringed by graceful Corinthian columns and pilasters. The theater was the hub of 18th-century Bordeaux.
Aquitaine Museum - This imaginatively laid out museum is well worth your visit. An interesting variety of exhibits cover the main facets of the region’s development. Drawings and writings on the period illustrate why 18th-century Bordeaux was often compared to Paris.
Musée des Beaux Arts - Behind the luxurious Hôtel de Ville (city hall), this fine art museum has an impressive collection of 17th-century paintings by Flemish, Dutch and Italian masters as well as works by Delacroix.
