Located roughly between Salerno and Sorrento, Amalfi was already an important maritime republic in the Middle Ages. In fact, the Amalfi Tables represent the oldest maritime code in the world, which were observed throughout the Mediterranean until the late 16th century.
Today, Amalfi is one of the most popular resorts and stopovers along the famed Amalfi Drive, Italy's celebrated corniche that hugs the mountainous coast and carves its way through sheer rock. Opulent villas, cloaked in brilliantly colored bougainvillea, hide behind high walls and wrought-iron gates. Waves pound against the steep shoreline and tortuous bends challenge a steady stream of tourist vehicles. Around every hairpin turn spectacular scenery awaits. Spread across the slope of the steep Lattari hills, the town itself boasts a superb setting and plenty of charm. The small, inviting center features several attractions that should not be missed. Of particular note is the duomo, also known as Cathedral Sant'Andrea, a marvel of ancient Arab-Moorish architecture. The church dominates the lively piazza, full of shops and crowded with residents and tourists at any time of day. Ruggedly beautiful and enchanting Amalfi will guarantee you a delightful introduction to Italy’s famed coastline.
Amalfi Activities
The Duomo, named in honor of St. Andrew (Sant’ Andrea), this splendid cathedral evokes Amalfi's rich past. Reached by climbing a flight of steps, the church is characterized by its black and white façade and mosaics. It dates from the 11th century, although the present structure has been rebuilt. The Duomo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (admission charged).
High above Amalfi is the Capuchin Monastery with a beautiful cloister offering superb views. The 12th-century monastic complex now houses the Cappuccini Convento Hotel; it can be reached via a lift from the coastal road.
Boasting a superb location at 1,155 feet above sea level, the Rufolo Gardens are famous for their beautiful landscaped grounds, framed by umbrella pines and full of colorful blooms. It was this site that inspired Richard Wagner in his opera Parsifal. The gardens are reached following a 30-minute, winding drive to Ravello and a walk through this charming town perched high above Amalfi.
About a two-hour drive from Amalfi lies the archaeological site of Paestum. Its temple ruins are among the finest remains of Greek architecture on the mainland of Italy. Guests interested in visiting the site may want to arrange a trip by private car.
Scenically located in the shadows of the volcanic Mount Etna, Catania is surrounded by a region rich in citrus trees, eucalyptus forests and olive groves. Tour Via dei Crociferi, where the magnificent Roman Theatre has been reconstructed.
Catania Activities
Located at the northern end of Via Etnea, the Bellini Gardens offer fine views and a tranquil enclave away from the bustle of Catania’s busy main street.
In the Piazza San Francesco stands the house where Catania’s greatest native son, the composer Vincenzo Bellini, was born in 1801. It is now the Bellini Museum, containing memorabilia of the man and his work.
The Duomo church is a fine example of Vaccarini’s work. The composer Bellini is buried inside the cathedral and a sumptuous chapel is dedicated to Sant’Agata, Catania’s patron saint. Outside in the square stands the obelisk-balancing elephant carved out of lava stone, representing the emblem of the city.
Regarded by many as the most distinctive of the Greek Isles because of its lush vegetation, hidden beaches, and near-mountainous scenery, Corfu has always attracted visitors - Venetians, Gauls, Austrians, and the British, who introduced cricket here. Shop for silver in the old Venetian quarter of Kerkyra, in main town, or visit the beach at Paleokastritsa and see if you agree that it is indeed the loveliest in the Mediterranean.

Don't miss this opportunity to tour the Achilleion Palace, built by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria in 1891. View her breathtaking gardens as well as a spectacular panoramic view of the Ionian Sea. The Achilleion Palace also houses the Terrace of the Muses, which was built as a tribute to the nine muses of Greek mythology.
Corfu Activities
Go off-roading to see Corfu's beautiful landscape up close. Take a scenic drive through the wonderful Corfiot countryside, full of olive groves, pine, cypress, lemon and orange trees. Hike to the top of Mount Pantokrator where you'll get a perfect view of Corfu's lush greenery and memorable views firsthand.
Katakolon is the gateway to Olympia, site of the first Olympic games which began in 776 B.C. Olympia was a sacred precinct built exclusively for the quadrennial games dedicated to Zeus during which all hostilities were ceased in the name of athletic competition. Much was destroyed when the games were outlawed as a pagan festival in 393 A.D., but visitors can still see the Temple of Zeus and the 45,000 seat stadium. The Archaeological Museum houses sculptures, including the famous "Winged Victory."

Visit the site of ancient Olympia, 25 miles from Katákolon. With the impressive Temple of Zeus with its forty-foot statue of the god, and the original Olympic stadium, this town was a hive of activity in centuries past.

You are invited to experience the beauty and charm of the Mercouri's Vineyards and Winery, to see the old and new winery, and also to have a taste of the three different wines produced locally.
Perched at the very top of precipitous cliffs, Santorini towers above its original harbor and was once reached only by foot or mule. Today a cable car is the best route. The island scenery is unique in all the world with jagged outcroppings of red and black lava and stairways cut deep in the cliffsides. Buried under volcanic ash in a cataclysmic explosion during the 16th century BC, the ruins of ancient Thera are a great "find" for archaeologists.

Santorini's spectacular caldera is a vestige of what was probably the biggest volcanic eruption in recorded history, believed by some to have caused the disappearance of Atlantis. The island's violent volcanic history is visible everywhere you look - in black-sand beaches, earthquake-damaged dwellings and raw cliffs of lava plunging into the sea.

See the amazing ruins that have been excavated there, buried some thirty feet below the earth's surface after the eruption of the island's volcano. The Archaeological Museum is known to have the finest collection of Greek art in the world. Exhibits include the sensational finds from the excavations at Mycenae and the remarkably well preserved frescoes from a 3,000-year-old civilization discovered at Akrotiri on the island of Santorini. There are also classical statuary, pottery, stone carvings and jewelry from excavations throughout Greece.
The Benaki Museum has recently undergone thorough modernization. Its three floors house more than 30,000 items, all illustrating the character of the Greek world.
Located near Kolonaki, the Goulandris Museum features a fantastic collection of Cycladic and ancient art spanning 5,000 years. The exhibits were assembled by ship owner Nikolaos P. Goulandris. Its treasures include many of the slim marble figurines that fascinated artists like Picasso and Modigliani.
Mount Lycabettus, Athens' highest hill, is only a 10-minute walk from Syntagma Square. It borders the fashionable Kolonaki residential area. A steeply inclined funicular climbs to the summit, which is crowned by a small, white chapel. Pollution permitting, the view from Mount Lycabettus is the finest in Athens.
Plaka stretches east from the Agora, this lovely quarter, with winding alleys, neo-classical buildings, whitewashed, bougainvillea-framed houses and tiny churches, is worth your exploration.

Katakolon is the gateway to Olympia, site of the first Olympic games which began in 776 B.C. Olympia was a sacred precinct built exclusively for the quadrennial games dedicated to Zeus during which all hostilities were ceased in the name of athletic competition. Much was destroyed when the games were outlawed as a pagan festival in 393 A.D., but visitors can still see the Temple of Zeus and the 45,000 seat stadium.
