Many impressive 16th-century limestone buildings and fortifications from the Knights have endured, helping make the city of Valetta simply magnificent to experience today. Valletta Attractions Explore the city's main square and pass many of its ancient buildings. Then head to St. John's Cathedral, founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John during the 16th century. Today the cathedral is the final resting place for many of the knights - their headstones line the cathedral floor. Valletta Activities Visit the Armory, St, John's Co-Cathedral, and the 18th century Manoel Theater for some more spectacular sights. Visit the National Museum of Archaeology. It houses collections of pottery, sculpture, statuettes, stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other prehistoric sites. Explore the Palace of the Grand Masters, completed in 1574. It contains portraits of the Grand Masters of the Order and European monarchs, interesting furniture and other works of art. 3	Sunday, 10/17/27	About Barcelona Founded by Romans in the first century BC, Barcelona is the vibrant capital of Catalonian Spain. Many of the worlds finest treasures can be seen in Barcelonas museums and monuments. Romanesque and Gothic frescoes and treasures can be enjoyed at the Catalan Art Museum. Among the most treasured sites is Gaudis masterpiece, The Sagrada Familia. Barcelona Attractions While you're in Barcelona, don't miss the Picasso Gallery. Several adjoining 15th-century palaces house a huge collection (over 2,000 pieces) of Picasso's work. Barcelona Activities Stroll along Las Ramblas, a wonderfully vibrant part of the city where street vendors and performers vie for your attention. Explore the many churches and cathedrals of Barcelona and discover the city's modernist architecture along Paseo de Gracia. Visit Antoni Gaudí's unfinished Segrada Familia. 4	Monday, 10/18/27	About Marseille Founded nearly 26 centuries ago, Marseilles is the oldest city in France, a mosaic of old and new with a dozen villages and eight islands, each offering a world of enchanting discoveries. At nearby Avignon, visit the magmificient Palace of the Popes and the hilltop Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde. Explore ruins of 13th century Palais Longchamps and colorful "Old Harbour" where you can browse open-air markets. Marseille Attractions For the best view of the city, there's only one place to go: Notre Dame de la Garde. Entirely covered in gold leaf, it towers over Marseille at an impressive 500 feet tall (154 meters.) Throughout the years, it has served as a lookout post, a military zone and a place of worship. Marseille Activities Stroll around the Old Port, or Vieux Port as the locals say, which was once known as the gateway to the Mediterranean. Here you'll find the popular theatre, Théâtre National de la Criée, as well as many cafés and restaurants lining the streets. See the amazing history of the city - 26 centuries worth - at Musée d'Histoire de Marseille. Walk through Cours Julien, a pedestrian square with a beautiful water garden and fountain, as well as trendy shops, cafés and theatres. 5	Tuesday, 10/19/27	About Genoa For centuries, Genoa has been a major commercial seaport. Today, it is one of Italy's largest cities. Genoa is located in northwestern Italy, in the inner harbor of the Gulf of Genoa. This city was once home to Christopher Columbus and world-renowned violinist Niccol� Paganini. Within the city's medieval walls you can wander the caruggi (alleys) where the wealthy Genovese lived and guilds set up shop. The alleys are still home to specialty shops, Baroque and Romanesque churches and 500-year-old apartment buildings. Genoa Attractions Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the underwater world at the Aquarium of Genoa. This is the largest aquarium in Europe, featuring sharks, dolphins, penguins, seals, sea turtles, jellyfish, giant Japanese spidercrabs, and more. Discover new ecosystems such as the flooded forest, the mangroves, the Madagascar reef and the Moluccan Islands. Adventurers of all ages will be swept away! Genoa Activities Piazza de Ferrari - This site of bustling activity is Genoa's town center, dominated by an impressive fountain. Via Garibaldi - Genoa's leading families built their residences along this street from the mid-1500s onward to escape the cramped conditions of the medieval section. Most of these mansions have been converted to museums housing some of the finest art collections in the country. The 16th-century Palazzo Municipale contains manuscripts by Christopher Columbus. Piazza Matteotti - This square features important buildings such as the former Doge's Palace, known for its frescoes by Carlone and Tiepolo, and the Gothic San Mateo Church with a crypt containing the tomb of navy admiral Andrea Doria. Caruggi District - Caruggi, as the winding, picturesque alleys are called, make up the heart of historic Genoa. In this warren of narrow, cobbled streets, extending north from Piazza Caricamento, one finds the city's oldest churches, 500-year-old apartment blocks and tiny shops selling antique furniture. 6	Wednesday, 10/20/27	About Naples Naples the diva of Italy. Voluptuous, vivacious and vibrantly alive. All the marvelous sights, scents and sounds of Southern Italy are here. It's where pasta was invented and where the first pizza was tossed. And in the ashen ruins of Pompeii, see where ancient Romans came to play, only to be lost under Vesuvius fire and fury. Naples Attractions While you're in the area, you'll want to visit Pompeii, one of the most famous excavation sites in the world. A thriving city 1,900 years ago, it was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. when 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone covered it. Enter Pompeii by the sea gate and take a short walk to the hub of the city: the Forum. View the lavish temples and porticoes that lay beneath the ash for centuries. Naples Activities Take a short boat trip to the entrancing Isle of Capri, and explore Capri Town. Wander its quaint streets and explore its shops and cafés. Discover the Gardens of Augustus, overlooking the famous Faraglioni of Capri and Marina Piccola. Take a ride up the Amalfi Coast. 7	Thursday, 10/21/27	About Palermo The capital of Sicily is situated on a crescent-shaped bay on the island's north coast. Once the intellectual capital of southern Europe, Palermo has always been at the crossroads of civilization. Due to its favorable location, Sicily's most interesting city has attracted almost every people and culture touching the Mediterranean world. Its most unique characteristic is a harmonious blend of Arab-Norman cultures mixed with Byzantine and Jewish elements, which created some unforgettable and resplendent works of art. Palermo Attractions Today, visitors still enjoy seeing the legacy of Palermo's rich past. Great Arab-Norman buildings include the Cappella Palatina, La Martorana, San Giovanni degli Eremiti and, a few miles outside the city, the Cathedral of Monreale. The Archaeological Museum and the Regional Gallery are both worth a visit. The bustling streets and animated markets give the town an Oriental feel. Palermo's center can be easily explored on foot. The Quattro Canti, or Four Corners, is the monumental crossroads laid out in 1608-1620 at the central intersection of the four longest and straightest streets of the city. North of Piazza Castelnuovo lie the avenues of the new city. Most sights are scattered along three major streets: Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Via Maqueda and Via Roma. A vigorous metropolis with a strong historical profile, Palermo is packed with interest and, approached with an open mind, you will find it an enriching and enjoyable place to explore. Palermo Activities Porta Nuova - At the beginning of Corso Vittorio Emanuele stands this impressive monument. With majolica- tiled pinnacle and the enormous busts of four Moors the Porta Nuova presents an imposing sight. La Martorana The church was founded in 1143. It is known for its fine Byzantine mosaics. Palatine Chapel - The famous chapel is located in the former Palace of the Norman’s and dates from the 12th century. While the palace houses the Sicilian Parliament and is not open to tourists, the chapel can be visited. It features lavish Arab- Norman decorations, with glittering mosaics and a splendid Arab honeycomb stalactite wooden ceiling. Because of its great popularity with visitors, admission is strictly regulated and long lines must be anticipated. Cathedral Treasury - On display here are contents of some of the royal tombs, in particular the crown of Constance of Aragon. The crown was made by local craftsmen in the 12th century. Archaeological Museum - The museum houses one of the most interesting collections in Italy, illustrating the history of western Sicily from prehistoric times to the Roman era.
