rapidly as a supply point for western gold fields. The largest city in Oregon and one of the busiest ports on the West Coast, it manufactures paper and wood products, electronic instruments, and machinery. The city grew rapidly after 1850, serving as a supply point for the California and Alaska gold fields. Its varied architecture includes a neoclassical city hall and the postmodernist Portland Building designed by Michael Graves. The Univ. of Portland, Reed College, and museums of art, science, and advertising are among the many institutions in the area. The region is noted for its dramatic scenery; Mt. Hood is nearby. Visit Mount St. Helens and see the crater, lava dome and blast zone of this infamous volcano.
Go for a bike ride at Fort Stevens. You'll see Battery Russell, dating back to the early 20th century, with its panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean; Cape Disappointment Light House and the Washington State shoreline. While you're there, look for the wreck of the Peter Iredale, an English ship that ran aground in 1906.
Located in northwest Oregon, The Dalles is a living historical landmark. Among the intriguing exhibits at the new Columbia Gorge Discovery Center (opening Memorial Day, 1997) is a 33-foot replica of the Columbia River, detailing 15 miles of its course, before, during and after construction of The Dalles Dam, including Celilo Falls and the seining grounds.
But that's just a drop in the bucket compared to all there is to do here. You can ride a train to see the real dam. Take a walking tour of the many historic sites and murals throughout the town. Discover ancient Indian petroglyphs. Or splash through the rapids on the Deschutes River.
