About Baltra Galapagos
Baltra Island, also know as South Seymour, is typically the first place where tourists set foot, as the main Galapagos airport is located here. Dry and flat, it is ideal for this purpose but lacks other real draws for visitors. During World War II, the United States used the island as an Air Force base, primarily for protecting the Panama Canal.
Though Galapagos land animals are sparse, the grasslands of Baltra do provide habitat for several species of birds, from small ground finches and noddy terns to large brown pelicans and the prehistoric black frigate. Sea lions also can be spotted on occasion.
Dragon Hill, or "Cerro Dragon," is named after its population of land iguanas. The site offers a beautiful view of the landscape and two small brackish lagoons where flamingos and other shore birds occasionally feed. Along the trail, we'll cross a beautiful "white forest" of Palo Santo (incense) trees and Galapagos cotton plants. Excursion options include a high-intensity hike with swimming/snorkeling at the beach, high intensity snorkeling from a zodiac followed by a short walk and a low-intensity Zodiac ride along the coastline with optional dry landing for animal observation.
Located south of Santiago, the geology of Isla Rábida makes it stand out from the other Galápagos Islands, in that it consists primarily of spatter-cone volcanic lava and eroded hills in spectacular shades of red and brown. Visitors to Isla Rábida will land on the island's northern beach with its unusual maroon-colored sand. Upon arrival, they are likely to see sea lions and marine iguanas lazing in and around the nearby caves. Brown pelicans can be spotted nesting in the vegetation just inland from the beach, while masked and blue-footed boobies nest on the cliffs above.
Tagus Cove is a natural protected harbor where centuries ago whalers safely spent the night and left their ships' signatures painted on the rocks. Inland on this large island are 5 huge volcanoes, mountains and Darwin's salt lake crater.
Floreana Island was once a penal colony for Ecuador, the first capital of the Galapagos and where Charles Darwin met the viceroy of Galapagos.
Cormorant Point Activities
Your excursion options include a medium-intensity wet landing at Cormorant Point (or Punta Cormorant), where you may see two plant species found only at this particular site, as well as flamingos, stilts and whit cheeked pintail ducks. Or try advanced snorkeling in Devil's Crown Volcanic Cone to spy grunts, groupers, chubs, spotted eagle rays, white-tipped reed sharks, sea stars, parrotfish and rainbow wrasse.
Cerro Brujo is a beautiful beach of white coral beach where you can swim and watch birds and sea lions, plus you can snorkel. Located on the north coast of Isla San Cristobal. In the vicinity of the beach you can see seabirds like herons, frigate birds and shore birds.
Sleeping lion or Kicker Rock is a rock formation, located on the coast of Isla San Cristobal in the Galapagos Archipelago. It is a magnificent island in the middle of the sea, rising 500 feet from the ocean, is shaped like a giant sleeping lion , hence its name. The rocks are remains of a vertical formation of tufa, and is a favorite place for various species of seabirds.
The hub of most activity in the Galapagos, Puerto Ayora is a charming port town where sea, sun, seabirds and sailboats coexist in happy equilibrium. On the town’s outskirts, you will also find the headquarters to the world-renown Charles Darwin Research Station.
Puerto Ayora is a lively seaside town offering international cuisine, oceanfront hotels, outdoor bars, scuba diving schools and an avenue of boutiques with everything from tie-dyed sarongs to Panama hats.
Punta Suarez is located west of the Española Island. It is a land dominated by birds, where bright colors collide like the waves against its rugged cliffs.
Gardner Bay is located at the east coast of the Spanish Island in the Galapagos Archipelago. It is a white coral beach full of sea lions, ideal for swimming and snorkelling, as well as can be seen several marine species in Galapagos. The white sand and calm of its clear waters invite relaxation.
Daphne Major and Daphne Minor are located between Santa Cruz and Santiago Islands. Most tourists are restricted from visiting these islands by the Galapagos National Park; however, the islands continue to be a popular stop for scientists researching the unique qualities of the Galapagos finches.
