About Antalya
All of the right elements come together to make this sun-drenched Mediterranean town on the Turkish Riviera a major holiday resort. The beautiful crescent bay, dramatic cliffs and jagged mountains contribute to a stunning backdrop. It is an attractive city with shady palm-lined boulevards and a prize-winning marina. In the picturesque old quarter, narrow streets and old wooden houses huddle against the ancient city walls.
Antalya Attractions
Although the beaches are out of town, Antalya itself draws visitors who come here to see the old town with its picturesque harbor and the excellent Archaeological Museum. Its outstanding exhibits provide fascinating glimpses into ancient and modern life of the region. In the surrounding area are additional attractions such as Aspendos, Perge and Side. Their remains of antiquity are considered among the most impressive sites in Anatolia.
Antalya Activities
Hadrian's Gate: This structure was built in honor of the Roman Emperor Hadrian who visited Antalya in 130 A.D. Main Square: With its landmark clock tower, the square offers lovely views of the bay and the distant mountain peaks. Karatay Medrese (Theological College): Built by the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubat in the 13th century, this college exemplifies the best of Seljuk stone carving. It is located in the old quarter. Ataturk Museum: The museum features a collection of interesting memorabilia commemorating the founder of the Turkish Republic.
Paphos is a charming long stretched resort town. The main town is located on a hill, 43 m. above sea level and lies separated from lower Paphos and its historical harbour.
Paphos Activities
At the harbour, there is the Castle of Paphos, originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour and rebuilt by the Lusignans in the thirteenth century, then dismantled in 1570 by the Venetians, who found themselves unable to defend it against the Ottomans, who in their turn restored and strengthened it after they captured the island.
The city contains many catacomb sites dating back to the early Christian period. The most famous is Saint Solomoni Church, originally a Christian catacomb retaining some of its twelfth century frescoes. A sacred tree at the entrance is believed to cure the ailments of those who hang a personal offering on its branches.
A few miles outside the city, the rock of Aphrodite emerges from the sea. According to legend, Aphrodite rose the waves in this strikingly beautiful spot. The Greek name, Petra tou Romiou is associated with the legendary frontier-guard of Byzantine times, Digenis Acritas, who kept the marauding Saracens at bay. It is said in one such fight he heaved a large rock (Petra), at his enemy.
Near Petra tou Romiou, there is Palaepaphos, Old Paphos, one of the most celebrated places of pilgrimage of the ancient Greek world, and once an ancient city kingdom of Cyprus. Here are the ruins of the famous Temple of Aphrodite, the most ancient remains, go back to the 12th century BC. The temple was one of the most important places of cult and pilgrimage of the ancient world, till the 3rd-4th century A.D. The Museum, housed in the Lusignan Manor, is small but impressive with many finds from the area.
Geroskipou with its remarkable five-domed Byzantine church of Ayia Paraskevi, and its Folk Art Museum is a town in Paphos metropolitan area known for many years now for its special delight 'loukoumi'.
North-east of Paphos lies Ayios Neophytos Monastery, famous for its 'Encleistra', Enclosure, carved out of the mountain by the hermit himself, which boasts some of the finest Byzantine frescoes of the 12th and 15th centuries. Near by too is the painted village church of Emba (Empa).
The gulf city of Kusadasi has miles of isolated beaches and is a rather lively resort. A tour of nearby Ephesus establishes the areas early religious importance and is considered one of the seven wonders of the world for its ruins. Among the most visited sites are the home where the Virgin Mary lived until her death, the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan and the Street of Curates.
Kusadasi Attractions
When you're in the area, don't miss the chance to visit the once powerful trading and religious city of Ephesus. Travel through the Magnesia Gate, the main entrance to the ancient city, and continue along marble streets grooved by chariot wheels. Gaze upon beautiful temples, porticoes, fountains and frescoes. Discover the three-story Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian, the Odeum, the Fountain of Trajan and the Great Theater.
Kusadasi Activities
Explore the 14th-century Turkish baths and the Isa Bey Mosque on your way to the Basilica of St. John.
Visit the Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Less known than Ephesus are the ruins of ancient Miletus and Dydima. They include a well-preserved Roman theater at Miletus and the sacred Temple of Apollo at Dydima. It requires a day trip to visit these sites. They are favored mainly by guests with a keen interest in archaeology.
Officially named Lesbos, more often called Mytilini after its principal city, the island is the third largest in Greece, famed for its olive oil. Its undulating hills are said to support 11 million olive trees, which glisten silver in the sunlight, while the higher peaks are swathed in deep pine forests. The island has long been a cradle of poetry and art. For the most part, Lesbos is an island of quiet villages. Mytilini is the capital of Lesbos, the wooded Aegean isle. One of the world's oldest cities, its roots stretch back into the dim world of the myths. Even in very ancient times Mytilini was famous for its history and its commercial importance and activity. It was the birthplace of leading figures in the intellectual world, such as Sappho, the world's greatest lyrical poetess; Pittacus, one of the Seven Sages of antiquity; the poet Alcaeus and many, many more. It is also the birthplace of the worst terrorists the Aegean has ever encountered, the Barbarossa Brothers - Greeks who turned pirates for the Sultan.
Istanbul is not only where Europe meets Asia; it's where history, built upon empire after empire, meets modern-day commercialism. Explore Old Istanbul's mosques, hippodromes and opulent palaces. Discover remnants of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Test your bargaining savvy with the merchants at the Grand Bazaar and visit the awe-inspiring Ayasofya (Church of Holy Wisdom). Istanbul is the perfect place to step far back in time and admire incredible cultural accomplishments. Don't forget your camera!
Istanbul Attractions
Journey to Istanbul's Sultanahmet neighborhood to experience the astounding Ayasofya (also know as the Church of Holy Wisdom or the Hagia Sophia), an incredible example of Byzantine architecture. The original cathedral was completed in A.D. 537, using columns and marble from other temples around the empire. Earthquakes, crusaders and successive rulers have all left their mark on the Ayasofya. The original mosaics, which were once plastered over, have been gloriously restored. Simply put, this is a sight you will always remember.
Istanbul Activities
Equally affecting is the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Camii), a grand, bulbous monument to Islam. With 260 stained glass windows, six minarets and liberal use of decorative tile, the Blue Mosque is an amazing visual adventure.
Take a tour of Dolmabahçe Palace and see how the sultans of the Ottoman Empire lived.
