3	Saturday, 6/13/26	About Sete Situated at the Golfe du Lion in the south of France, Sete, called Ceta or Sita under the Gallo-Romans, was first known for its production of pickled fish. With the closure of the seaports of Aigues Mortes, Agde and Narbonne in the 17th century, a new port was needed to open the Languedoc onto the Mediterranean. Sete developed around the new port, becoming the country's second busiest port after Marseille.. Sete Attractions The upper part of the town straddles the slopes of Mont St. Clair, offering wonderful views of the port and the vast Bassin de Thau, a breeding ground for mussels and oysters. Walk the Promenade des Anglais which borders the sea, and rub shoulders with royalty and film stars on golden beaches. Take a trip to Monte Carlo to see million dollar yachts in the most picturesque setting of Monte Carlo´s bay. Nice Attractions The Old Town is a must to be explored. Its look has changed little since the 1700s. Narrow streets and winding alleys are lined with faded 17th- and 18th-century buildings. The famous flower market never ceases to delight visitors as well as residents. The Italian façades of modern Nice and early 20th-century residences, which made the city one of Europe’s most fashionable winter retreats, remain largely intact. Although not blessed with excellent beaches, its pebbled sands continue to attract scores of sun worshippers every year. Nice Activities Musée National - Marc Chagall Established by the artist himself, the collection features the most important permanent exhibit of his work. The main focus is a series of 17 canvases comprising his colorful “Biblical Message.” The excellent use of space and light further enhances the featured paintings, sculptures and mosaics. Musée Matisse - Housed in a 17th-century Italian villa, the museum features exquisite paintings and bronzes by the great master. These works of art illustrate the different stages of Henri Matisse’s career and his development from the late 19th century to his death in 1954. Parc du Château - This large, shady public park is located on a 300-foot hill and offers beautiful views of the city and the sea. The château, after which the hill and park are named, was established in the 12th century, but razed in 1706 by Louis XIV. Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint Nicholas - Located in the western part of the city, the multicolored cathedral crowned by six onion domes was built in the early 1900s in 17th-century style. It is one of the most elaborate and exotic structures in Nice. Museum of Modern & Contemporary Art - The museum specializes in French and American avant-garde artwork from the 1960s to the present. Its collection includes the work of Cesar,Warhol and Christo, to name a few. The Genoese Citadel dominates the coastline; you can visit it by crossing a drawbridge. The nearby Oratoire, a Renaissance chapel containing religious art, is also worth exploring. However, the main attractions of Calvi are the gorgeous beaches and lively marina. Calvi Activities A 50-minute train ride from Calvi to L'Ile Rousse takes you right along the coast. You can see the quaint old town and the main square, and watch (or even join) locals playing boules under the plane trees. You'll be dazzled by Monte Carlos elaborate casinos, the famous wine cellars of the Hotel de Paris and the Ephrussi-de-Rothschild Museum with its XV and XIX century treasures. An exciting stop at one of the worlds most enticing and alluring playgrounds. Monte Carlo Attractions Monaco-Ville comprises the old town and holds the seat of Monaco�s government. Other attractions include the 19th-century cathedral, the Parliament building and the Oceanographic Museum operated under the auspices of the Jacques Cousteau Society. Its western neighbors are the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The old town of Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in this area of the Mediterranean. It has succeeded in maintaining its original form, typical of towns from the 12th-14th centuries. The only car in the old walled section is a replica of a small Fiat Cinquecento with a mini-trailer, used to collect the trash. Often called the Lavender Island, the name refers to the aromatic, purple plant that grows in abundance on the island's stony slopes. Today, Hvar Town is one of Croatia's most popular resorts, reputed to receive more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country. Hvar Activities The Hvar Theater - The theater, occupying a part of the Arsenal, was founded in 1612 and is one of the oldest community theaters in Europe. Crvene Stijene (Red Rocks) - Five miles east of Hvar lies an unusual and picturesque natural phenomenon. Layers of limestone interspersed with reddish breccia were lifted up in some distant geological past. The soft breccia layers were washed away by rain and the sea, leaving vertical red-coated hollows. 18	Sunday, 6/28/26	About Trieste Trieste is a city and port in northeastern Italy right on the border with Slovenia. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. It is capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province. Trieste flourished as part of Austro-Hungarian Empire during the period 1857 - 1918 when it was Central Europe's prosperous Mediterranean seaport and its capital of literature and music. Today, Trieste is a border town par excellence. The population is an ethnic mix of the neighboring regions; The dominant local Venetian dialect of Trieste is called Triestine. This dialect and Italian is spoken in the city center whilst Slovenian is spoken in several of the immediate suburbs. Italian and the Slovenian language are considered autochthonous to the area. There is also a fair number of German-speakers too. Trieste Activities The Castle of Miramare was built from 1856 to 1860 to a design by Carl Junker on the orders of Archduke Maximilian. The Castle gardens provide a setting of outstanding beauty with a variety of trees, chosen by and planted on the orders of Maximilian, that today make a remarkable collection. The Castle of San Giusto - in which several rooms, including the Sala Caprin, are open to the public - houses a Museum displaying historical weapons and is regularly used for the staging of exhibitions, events and, in the summer, open-air shows. A walk on the Castle ramparts and bastions gives a complete panorama of the city of Trieste, its hills and the sea. n the 6th century a great hall of worship of the Cathedral of San Giusto was built on Roman propylaca, using part of the existing structure. Perhaps the entrance to a monument, this was commonly known as the Capitoline Temple, as a pyramidal altar with the symbols of the capitoline triad (Jove, Juno and Minerva) had been found inside it. Among the works of historical interest in the basilica are the apsidal mosaics depicting Our Lady of the Assumption and San Giusto, laid by master craftsmen from Veneto in the 12th-13th centuries. The small 14th-century church of San Giovanni (the old baptistry) on the left and San Michele al Carnale on the right, by the entrance to the Museum, complete a fine Medieval churchyard. The Roman Theatre lies at the foot of the San Giusto hill, and faces the sea. The construction partially exploits the gentle slope of the hill, and most of the construction work is in stone. The topmost portion of the amphitheatre steps and the stage were presumably made of wood. The statues that adorned the theatre (which was brought to light in the '30s) are now preserved at the Town Museum. Three inscriptions from the Trajan period mention a certain Q. Petronius Modestus, a person who was closely connected with the development of the theatre, which was erected during the second half of the 1st century. In the whole Trieste province there are 10 speleological groups. Drawing upon the early Byzantine tradition, the edifice was built in the early Middle Ages, most probbably at the begining of the 9th century, as legend has it. It has a circular ground-plan and, like several other buildings of its kind built around Europe at the same period, a double space. Yet, it is a wholly original project for which there exists no prototype. Unfortunately, its original appereance has not been preserved and it now appears devoin of its former south annex. Its treasures include many of the slim marble figurines that fascinated artists like Picasso and Modigliani. Mount Lycabettus, Athens' highest hill, is only a 10-minute walk from Syntagma Square. It borders the fashionable Kolonaki residential area. A steeply inclined funicular climbs to the summit, which is crowned by a small, white chapel. Pollution permitting, the view from Mount Lycabettus is the finest in Athens. Plaka stretches east from the Agora, this lovely quarter, with winding alleys, neo-classical buildings, whitewashed, bougainvillea-framed houses and tiny churches, is worth your exploration.
