13	Wednesday, 4/8/26	About Arrecife Lanzarote is perhaps the most unique among the Canary Islands, astounding visitors with its amazing landscapes. Due to a massive volcanic eruption in 1730 that lasted for six years, one third of the island was covered by a sea of lava. In 1824, a new volcano thrust out of the earth's crust and once again molten lava poured over a good part of Lanzarote, leaving a lunar landscape of more than a hundred craters, lava fields, and layers of cinders and pebbles. Dromedaries found here add to this bizarre scenery. Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, is situated on the island's eastern coast. Blackened lava and yellow sands provide a dramatic backdrop. Home to the archipelago's largest fishing fleet, the harbor is packed with boats. While Arrecife itself has little to offer beyond a modern art museum, it provides an excellent starting point for exploration into the fascinating interior. Especially a trip to the Fire Mountains should not be missed. Arrecife Attractions It is impossible to mention Lanzarote without mentioning at the same time the island�s most famous son, Cesar Manrique. As an artist and architect, he sought to construct buildings as extended natural forms. He began to paint abstract canvases, which made their way to the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Some of his masterworks on Lanzarote include the Cactus Garden and Los Jameos del Agua, where within the grotto�s lava formations Manrique incorporated a concert cave, a restaurant and a bar. His home, donated to the people of Lanzarote, is now known as the Fundacion Cesar Manrique. The living room has been transformed into a gallery displaying a private collection of his works. 14	Thursday, 4/9/26	About Agadir In 1505 the tiny village of Agadir made its first mark on history. The Portuguese set up a trading post there, defended by the Santa Cruz fortress on Cap de Gue. Although a profitable endeavor, their stay was brief, as in 1541 they were ejected by the founder of the Saadian dynasty. A golden age then followed for Agadir, with ships arriving every day to take on cargos of sugar cane, dates, wax skins, oils, spices and gold. However, over the years Agadir went into decline and in 1960 it was destroyed by an earthquake. Today, Agadir has been reborn as a holiday capital. Constructed away from high risk areas using anti-seismic techniques, Agadir is an engaging town. The dormant white of its sculptural buildings is contrasted by the multi-colored flowers that adorn its tranquil gardens. Vacationers drink in the sea air, sitting at tables on the cafe terraces or strolling around the bazaars. While a little further away there is all the bustling activity surrounding the most important fishing port in Morocco, with its fleet of spruce trawlers bobbing up and down on the Atlantic swell. Located in a hilly region at the mouth of the Tagus, the city retains an old world flair with cobbled alleyways in Alfama, the old town. Competing with the elegant avenues of Alto where sorrowful "fado" music fills the evening air is the Chiado, Lisbons affluent shopping district. Lisbon Attractions Don't miss the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, or Jeronimo's Monastery. Commissioned in 1501 after Vasco da Gama's return from his voyage, this remarkable monastery is a beautiful and unique example of Manueline architecture. Lisbon Activities Explore the streets of Lisbon from Rossio Square to the main thoroughfare, the Avenida da Liberdade. Visit the monastery and the Maritime Museum, which houses miniature boats and original maps chronicling the history of navigation from the Middle Ages to today. Visit Sintra, considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Portugal. It was once the summer residence of Portuguese kings and aristocrats. The latter is primarily due to the pleasant climate. Various civilizations have flourished along these shores. Early records indicate that the city dates back to a Carthaginian settlement established in 325 BC. These settlers were followed by the Romans, who equally found the area inviting. Then the Moors ruled this region for five centuries and named the city Al-Akant. Today's name probably stems from this origin. The city's occupation by Roman and Moorish forces accounts for a notable and varied heritage. In fact, much of this cultural impact is still apparent today in numerous buildings, names and the cuisine. Alicante Activities Old QuarterThe town's Old Quarter features a labyrinth of winding streets. The character of old Spain is very much in evidence here. Regular ferry service connects the principal islands of the archipelago with the mainland. Through history, the three main islands, Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, were the object of invasion by outside powers. Moorish forces arrived during the 8th century and established their hold until the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba. James I of Aragon gained control over these specks of land in 1229, only to see them integrated into the independent kingdom of Mallorca in 1276. Later they were returned to the Aragonese crown. Today, invasions occur daily at airports and yacht harbors around the islands. The alluring mild climate attracts scores of northern Europeans who grow weary of cloudy days and cold temperatures. They come here to enjoy the sunshine and the beaches; at night they fill the clubs until the early morning hours. The name Ibiza has become synonymous with pleasure seeking. Ibiza Attractions As your ship pulls into the port of Eivissa (also known as Ibiza Town), you will have a fine view of the impressive fortifications. An easy stroll along the cobbled streets takes you to the lively downtown area of shops and restaurants. D'Alt Vila, the old town dominates the port and seafront. With its historic buildings and stately mansions, D'Alt Vila is the very heart of Eivissa. Step inside the cool recesses of the 13th-century Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows) or visit the Archaeological Museum, where the island’s history is well represented. With the closure of the seaports of Aigues Mortes, Agde and Narbonne in the 17th century, a new port was needed to open the Languedoc onto the Mediterranean. Sete developed around the new port, becoming the country's second busiest port after Marseille.. 32	Monday, 4/27/26	About Olbia, Sardinia Olbia, situated at the bottom of a deep inlet, is home to Sardinia's main harbour and tourist airport. After the collapse of the Roman empire and with subsequent vandal invasions, it fell to ruin, much like the rest of Sardinia's coastal towns. In the eleventh century, under the dominion of the Pisans settled in Gallura, it was reconstructed on its original site under the name Terranova, which remained in use until 1939. Upon becoming the bishop's see, Olbia enjoyed some rebirth with new maritime traffic and the spread of agriculture throughout the plains. However, its long economic and demographic stagnation continued until the 1800's, when city development once again called for the renewal of the harbour. Roads were then constructed leading out to the state trunk-road 131 and to the train station, and canals were built to contain the rivers directed out to sea. In the 1980's, an impetuous demographic development ensued, further contributed to by a large flow of immigration arriving from the rest of Sardinia and Italy at large, causing Olbia to jump into fourth place in Sardinia's urban hierarchy.
