About Cape Town
Cape Town's name originated from the term 'Cape of Good Hope' when Bartholomew Diaz and other seafarers looked forward to the sight of Table Mountain, like an inn that promised hospitality and prosperity. The presence of Table Mountain in all its splendour still invokes this kind of emotion. Cape Town is steeped in a rich history and is a cultural melting pot with its diverse and vibrant character being derived from Khoisan and other African tribes from the North, and Indonesian, French, Dutch, British and German settlers. Bustling and beautiful, the cosmopolitan nature of Cape Town means that one never tires of the multitude of experiences it has to offer.
Cape Town Activities
Table Mountain is one of South Africa's greatest landmarks and towers 1,086m above the City of Cape Town.
One of the most significant and symbolically charged pieces of land in South Africa, Robben Island guards the entrance to Table Bay. The name hails from the Dutch word for seals, The island was home to Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned there along with other political prisoners. Now a living museum, the island and its ghosts are visited voluntarily. As a place of history, education and insight into South Africa’s past, this is an essential excursion. The return boat trip (half an hour each way) to this World Heritage Site and a guided tour around the museum by an ex-inmate is an experience never to miss.
The Kirstenbosch Estate covers 528 hectares, 36 hectares make up the central landscaped garden on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, it is home to more than 8 500 indigenous plant species, and is known as one of the Seven Magnificent Botanical Gardens of the world.
In 1982 two breeding pairs of African penguins (once known as Jackass penguins thanks to the braying sound they make) moved into prime beachfront estate at Boulders beach between Simonstown and Cape Point. Today there are over 3 000 of these birds living here and the area is now a National Park. Penguins can be viewed up close as they frolic in the water and waddle on land. Sometimes it's hard to tell who is watching who. You're likely to see penguin pairs strolling along the boardwalks and in the park. This is the one place in the world you will be able to swim and sunbathe with penguins.
Tourists from all over the world have been coming to Durban for more than half a century, attracted mainly by the city’s famous beaches and the all year-round sunshine. But once they arrive here, they soon discover that this city has a lot more than beautiful, golden beaches to offer.
It is a center of world class sport and hosts major international events. It is a shopper’s paradise with sophisticated shopping malls and precincts, craft markets and street bazaars. It is an entertainment and hospitality center offering a wide range of accommodation from swish beachfront hotels to themed lodges, guesthouses, self-catering apartments and homely B&Bs. It is also a bustling commercial and manufacturing center connected to the business capitals of the world, and is built around one of the busiest ports in Africa.
Durban Attractions
There is an abundance of breathtaking scenery just beyond the city. To the north lies the bustling coastal town of Umhlanga, packed with hotels, restaurants and beautiful beaches. To the south is the Sapphire Coast, an endless stretch of sub-tropical paradise dotted with holiday towns. To the west lies the verdant Valley of 1000 Hills with its nature reserves and cultural villages. A little further afield, the Big 5 game reserves are just a few hours’ drive away, while to the west the mighty Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park – a World Heritage Site – beckons.
Pointe des Galets is a volcanic island lush with palm trees, rain forests and an abundance of flowers and tropical fruit trees. Enjoy the Creole-flavored French culture and the sophistication of downtown Paris in a tropical climate. Hike through the challenging volcanic mountains and enjoy the panoramic views of the rainforest from scenie vistas.
Pointe Des Galets Activities
State Garden - Located in St. Denis at the end of rue de Paris, the State Garden, or Jardin de l’Etat, was created by the French botanist Nicolas Bréon in 1877. The park contains hundreds of exotic plants and trees in an area of over 12 acres.
St. Gilles - About 12 miles south of the port is the seaside resort of St. Gilles. Its beach is popular with European tourists and young surfers. In addition to watersports centers, there are shops offering beach and resort wear, as well as several small cafés and restaurants.
Volcano Museum - Officially called La Maison du Volcan, the museum is located near the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Exhibits provide firsthand knowledge on worldwide volcanism and in particular about Réunion’s volcano, one of the most active in the world. To visit the volcano and the museum requires a long drive and a full-day trip. (The museum is closed on Mondays.)
Beaches - The best beaches are found in and around St. Gilles; snorkeling and scuba diving are available there.
Mauritius is situated in the south-west of the Indian Ocean about 800 km east of Madagascar. Together with Runion and Rodrigues it belongs to the Mascarene Islands. The island is of volcanic origin and mostly surrounded by coral-reefs. The national territory of Mauritius surrounds the islands Rodrigues, St. Brandon, Agalega-Islands and several smaller islands near the coast of Mauritius.
Port Louis Attractions
Attractions include the Caudan Waterfront, Port Louis Bazaar, the Mauritian Chinatown and the old Port Louis theatre. The capital has also three museums which are: the Mauritius Natural History Museum, the Blue Penny Museum and the Mauritius Stamp Museum.
Irresistible beaches and breathtaking scenery await you on Mahe, a truly unspoiled paradise. Waist away the day on a pristine, sugar-white beach; sample fresh seafood; or explore one of the rural villages that dot the island.
Mahe Island Attractions
Needless to say, Mahe Island's greatest attractions are its beaches, which have helped to make tourism its major industry. After you've spent a day or two sun-baking (er, bathing) on one of these clear-watered beaches, take a tour around the island (on your own or hire a service), and see the many tea, cinnamon, or vanilla plantations that contributed to the early days of the area's involvement in the Indian Ocean spice trade.
Aqaba is Jordan's only port and of tremendous importance to the country's economy. Countless trucks ply the route between Aqaba and the capital Amman, a journey of some 220 miles. With stark mountains rising in the background, Aqaba enjoys an attractive setting. For cruise vessels, the port provides the gateway for excursions to famed Petra and the spectacular desert and mountain region of Wadi Rum. Aqaba itself offers a string of shops, hotels and restaurants. Some recent archaeological discoveries in the center of town are thought to be the remains of the oldest church in the world, dating from the late 3rd century. Aqaba is also popular with diving enthusiasts who appreciate the great variety of marine life that abounds in the waters of the Red Sea.
Aqaba Attractions
Petra, the area's major attraction, lies 70 miles from the port. The remains of this once magnificent city date to the 3rd century BC when Nabataeans carved elaborate buildings out of solid rock. Abandoned and forgotten for centuries, the rose-red City of Petra was rediscovered in the 1800s. Excavations did not get underway until a hundred years later; the central section was unearthed after 1958. Today the site is recognized as one of the most spectacular attractions in the Middle East - a must-see for any visitor to this area.
The port and town of Sharm-el-Sheikh lies near the southernmost tip of the Sinai Peninsula where the Straits of Tiran meet the Gulf of Aqaba. With its strategic position, the Sinai posed a desirable target for various rulers over the centuries. Sharm-el-Sheikh was initially developed by the Israelis during the Sinai occupation. Na'ama Bay, a short drive from the port, has grown from virtually nothing into a sizeable resort since the early 1980s. Between the two towns a string of hotels line a once-untouched coastline. Resort hotels offer great opportunities for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Glass bottom boat trips are available for those preferring to view the exotic marine life of the Red Sea without getting their feet wet.
Rhodes, the largest of the Dodecanese Islands, is truly a vacation destination with something for everyone: sunshine, spectacular beaches on the Aegean Sea, a medieval walled city, an ancient acropolis, and much more. In ancient times, the people of Rhodes chose Helios, the Sun, as their divine patron. With an average of three hundred plus days of sunshine a year, it's safe to say that Helios continues to smile upon Rhodes today.
Rhodes Attractions
On the north end of the island, overlooking the sea, stand the ancient remains of the Acropolis of Rhodes. The buildings of the Rhodes Acropolis date back to the 3rd-2nd century BC. Though the entire Acropolis has yet to be excavated, some amazing sections have been restored: the stadium; a marble odeion - a concert hall or theatre; four columns of the Temple of Pythian Apollo; and a few remains of the Temple of Athena Polias and Zeus Polieus.
Rhodes Activities
Storm the Street of the Knights in the Old Town. This medieval, cobble-paved street lies over an ancient pathway from the Rhodes Acropolis to the port. In the early 16th century, the street was lined with inns housing the Knights of the Order of St. John, who once ruled the island. The inns that remain today are a study in history and architecture, definitely worth seeing. For a cleansing experience like no other, visit the Municipal Baths (Turkish baths) located in a 7th-century Byzantine structure in the old town. Discover the large collection of tombstones of the Knights of the Order of St. John at the Archeological Museum of Rhodes.
Iráklion, the capital city of Crete, rests on the side of a hill overlooking the Cretan Sea. The city is named after Hercules (Herakles, or in Modern Greek, Iraklís). Though a bustling metropolis, Iráklion is also the gateway to the nearby stunning ancient ruins of advanced civilizations. Bask on the glorious north coast beaches, socialize and people-watch in the cafés and restaurants of Platía Venizélou (Fountain Square), discover Crete's astonishing Minoan sites, and more. An abundance of new adventures are waiting for you.
Iraklion (Heraklion), Crete Attractions
Knossos Palace is one of the most spectacular of Crete's Minoan sites. The Minoan civilization flourished in Crete during the Bronze Age, around 3000 to 1100 BC. The palace has been linked to the mythological King Minos, the labyrinth and the Minotaur, and the story of Daedalus and Icarus. Excavations have further revealed the astounding palace, villas, roads, columns, courtyards, temples and theater.
Iraklion (Heraklion), Crete Activities
Wander the Archeological Museum of Crete. Spend some quality time admiring the Snake Goddess, Phaestos Disc and the Bull's Head. See what it was like to defend Iráklion from behind the impressive stone walls of the Koules Venetian Fortress.
For centuries, Genoa has been a major commercial seaport. Today, it is one of Italy's largest cities. Genoa is located in northwestern Italy, in the inner harbor of the Gulf of Genoa. This city was once home to Christopher Columbus and world-renowned violinist Niccolò Paganini. Within the city's medieval walls you can wander the caruggi (alleys) where the wealthy Genovese lived and guilds set up shop. The alleys are still home to specialty shops, Baroque and Romanesque churches and 500-year-old apartment buildings.
Genoa Attractions
Take a deep breath and immerse yourself in the underwater world at the Aquarium of Genoa. This is the largest aquarium in Europe, featuring sharks, dolphins, penguins, seals, sea turtles, jellyfish, giant Japanese spidercrabs, and more. Discover new ecosystems such as the flooded forest, the mangroves, the Madagascar reef and the Moluccan Islands. Adventurers of all ages will be swept away!
Genoa Activities
Piazza de Ferrari - This site of bustling activity is Genoa's town center, dominated by an impressive fountain.
Via Garibaldi - Genoa's leading families built their residences along this street from the mid-1500s onward to escape the cramped conditions of the medieval section. Most of these mansions have been converted to museums housing some of the finest art collections in the country. The 16th-century Palazzo Municipale contains manuscripts by Christopher Columbus.
Piazza Matteotti - This square features important buildings such as the former Doge's Palace, known for its frescoes by Carlone and Tiepolo, and the Gothic San Mateo Church with a crypt containing the tomb of navy admiral Andrea Doria.
Caruggi District - Caruggi, as the winding, picturesque alleys are called, make up the heart of historic Genoa. In this warren of narrow, cobbled streets, extending north from Piazza Caricamento, one finds the city's oldest churches, 500-year-old apartment blocks and tiny shops selling antique furniture. (Not to be explored by night!)
San Donato Church - Located on Piazza San Donato, this small Romanesque church houses a beautiful 16th-century triptych with the Adoration of the Magi by Jan van Cleve.
