About Kirkwall, Orkney Islands
Just 10 miles off the coast of Northern Scotland is Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, an area rich in wildlife and archaeological sites. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850, and the site reveals that Orkneys were inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago.

The islands are virtually a museum of prehistoric times. Rock circles, cairns, standing stones, ancient tombs and prehistoric villages are scattered about, gaining these islands international recognition. The Orkneys are also a paradise for bird watchers, with a myriad of puffins, eider ducks, whooper swans and arctic terns. These birds, as well as many other species, nest here during the summer months.

St. Magnus Cathedral - The massive, Norman-style cathedral was dedicated by its founder, Earl Rognvald, to his murdered kinsman, Earl Magnus, in the 12th century.
Bishop's Palace - Only the walls and the tower of this 12th-century residence, built for Bishop William of Old, still stand. A narrow, spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, affording a great view of the cathedral and across Kirkwall's rooftops.
Earl's Palace - Better preserved than the Bishop's Palace, the neighboring Earl's Palace dates to 1600. Its style blends medieval fierceness with the ornate elements of French Renaissance architecture. It features dank dungeons, massive fireplaces and a magnificent central hall. Excellent exhibits explain the use of the various rooms; they provide insight into the life of the earl and the manner in which he conducted his ruthless business.
Highland Park - A good mile south of town is this "most northerly legal distillery in Scotland." In operation for 200 years, it closed only once, during World War II when it was used as a military store.
Shetland Islands, archipelago, 552 sq mi (1,427 sq km), off N Scotland. They consist of c.100 islands c.70 mi (110 km) long, about a fourth of which are inhabited. The largest are Mainland (where Lerwick, the main town, is located), Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsey, and Bressay. Oil, produced offshore in the North Sea since the 1970s, supplements income
from traditional sheep, cattle, and knitware industries. Tourism is also important. The hardy Shetland pony and the Shetland sheepdog originated there. Occupied by Norsemen by the 9th cent., the islands were annexed to Scotland in 1472. Fishing is plentiful here, and the rocky cliffs offset by vast colonies of gannets and gulls make for breathtaking scenery.
Situated to the east of the island of Bressay in the Shetland Islands, the uninhabited Isle of Noss with its Old Red Sandstone cliffs is home to a large number of nesting seabirds including great skua, arctic skua, gannet, kittiwake, fulmar, puffin and guillemot. The island, which has been a National Nature Reserve since 1955, extends over an area of 343 ha (847 acres) and rises to a height of 180m (590 feet) at the Noup of Noss. Now managed jointly by the Garth Estate and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), the island's small population was largely cleared in the 1870s. Thereafter, the Marquis of Londonderry leased the island to rear Shetland ponies for his coal mines in County Durham.
Tórshavn (IPA: [ˈtʰɔuʂhaun]; Danish: Thorshavn) is the capital and largest town of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the north west of the town lies the 347-metre (1,138 ft) high mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the 350-metre (1,150 ft) high Kirkjubøreyn. The city itself has a population of 19,000 (2008). The city was founded in the 10th century.
A panoramic picture of Tórshavn.The Vikings established their parliament on the Tingenes peninsula in Tórshavn 825, thus Tórshavn was made capital of Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since. All through the Middle Ages the narrow peninsula jutting out into the sea made up the main part of Tórshavn. Sources do not mention a built-up area in Tórshavn until after the Protestant Reformation in 1539. Early on, Tórshavn became the center of the monopoly trade, thereby being the only legal place for the islanders to sell and buy goods. In 1856, the trade monopoly was abolished and the islands were left open to free trade. The town has grown rapidly ever since the turn of the 20th century into the undisputed administrative, economic and cultural center of the Faroes.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.

Hvalsey is located near Qaqortoq, Greenland and is the site of Greenland's largest, best-preserved Norse ruins in the area known as the Eastern Settlement
The town was built in 1755 as a colony on the site where the Kangaamiut settlement is located today, but was moved to its present-day location in 1782. Archaeological finds indicate that the area has been settled for more than 4,000 years.
Itilleq is the Arctic Circle village, situated right on this magical Northern line, in an archipelago surrounded by steep, alpine mountains.
The 120 people in the village mostly live off hunting and fishing, and cruise ships and minicruisers stop by in the summer while groups of heliskiers use the mountains around Itilleq for spectacular backcountry skiing in the deep Spring snow
The Arctic climate af Sisimiut has a temperature range of up to 20 degrees Celsius in the summer and down to - 35 degrees Celsius in the winter. Sisimiut is the most northern icefree town in the winter and the most southern town for dog-sledging. The main trade is fishing. Small and large trawlers and as well as cutters have their main port in Sisimiut. They fish shrimps, salmon, Greenland Halibut and cod. Hunting is also another mean of livelihood. Animals that are normally hunted are seals, walrus, Beluga Whale, narwhale, reindeer and musk oxen. The Royal Greenland factory is the largest within Greenland and is also the most modern shrimp-shelling factory in the world.
As the capital of Greenland, Nuuk is the center of its trade, shipping, industry and administration. Nuuk, also known as "the promontory," is located at the tip of a large peninsula by the mouth of the gigantic Nuuk Fjord. The town is the oldest in Greenland, built by the Danish missionary Hans Egede in 1728. With a population of more than 13,000 people, Nuuk is considered Greenland's largest town.
