As soon as you arrive in Skagen you squint: everything is yellow the houses, the railway station, the church, the shops and all of it bathed in a sunlight which seems to gain extra brightness by being reflected off two separate seas and a desert-like belt of sand dunes nearby. The distinctive colour of the town's buildings, stemming from the cheapest form of housepaint available, is a shade known throughout Denmark as 'Skagen Yellow'.
Skagen Attractions
The headland at Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark, is a spectacular setting where the two parts of the Baltic Sea, the Kattegat and the Skagerrak meet. This makes for turbulent seas and strandings - beachings and shipwreckings are not uncommon. The frequent shipping losses and the strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmark's earliest lighthouses, the Vippefyr, constructed in the 15th century. A reconstruction of the lighthouse is located to the north of the town of Skagen.
The largest and most important port in southeast Norway. A popular shopping area. Kristiansand, city and seaport in southern Norway, on the Skagerrak Strait. It is the seat of Vest-Agder County. The city became an Episcopal see in 1682. Population (1993 estimate) 67,113.

Shetland Islands, archipelago, 552 sq mi (1,427 sq km), off N Scotland. They consist of c.100 islands c.70 mi (110 km) long, about a fourth of which are inhabited. The largest are Mainland (where Lerwick, the main town, is located), Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsey, and Bressay. Oil, produced offshore in the North Sea since the 1970s, supplements income
from traditional sheep, cattle, and knitware industries. Tourism is also important. The hardy Shetland pony and the Shetland sheepdog originated there. Occupied by Norsemen by the 9th cent., the islands were annexed to Scotland in 1472. Fishing is plentiful here, and the rocky cliffs offset by vast colonies of gannets and gulls make for breathtaking scenery.
Akureyri were the sandbanks that projected into the harbour; in earlier times there were no fewer than five of those. Four have now disappeared, however, owing to the diligence of the Akureyri people in reclaiming land from the sea. The northernmost one, Oddeyri Point, is still in place, though, and a clear landmark in the town. It was in the inner harbour, in the safe shelter of Oddeyri Point, that the merchants of earlier times preferred have their ships lie at anchor. And the harbour depth allowed the largest vessels to anchor in close proximity to the shoreline so that a fully laden rowing boat would reach land within a few minutes.
Akureyri Activities
Laxadulshus, the town's oldest residence dates from 1795 and houses a fascinating display on the town's history and a pleasant cafe
The many churches are a source of interest. Logmannshlio church more than rewards the climb, while Akureyrarkirkja boasts a splendid 3200-pipe organ
The locals are proud of the botanic gardens and you'll be amazed at the variety of flowers that are nurtured in these northern climes
Kjarnaskogur, within an hour of the town, is Iceland's most visited forest. Enjoy its extensive leisure facilities, its breathtaking walks and fantastic ski slopes. The town also boasts the world's most northerly golf course and hosts the annual Arctic Open
It has more than its share of museums, including a Natural History Museum, a folk museum, and museums set in the homes of native poet Matthias Jochumsson and children's book author Jon Sveinson
safjrdur in Iceland has been a trading centre since 1569 and the regional capital of the West Fjords. The oldest part of the town rests on a sandbank that juts out into the fjord. It has been the site of a church for centuries and was called "Eyri" by locals, the parish being called Eyrarhreppur.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.
Reykjavik Attractions
A trip to Reykjavík would not be complete without a trip to the pools, which are open all year round.
