While the original founding goes back to Roman times, it was the Moors who arrived in 709 AD and made Valencia prosper, thanks to a booming trade in paper, silk, leather, ceramics, glass and silver work. After Almanzor's death, the area was conquered by the legendary "El Cid" during the Christian re-conquest of Spain. Not much is left from the Roman period, but the architectural legacy of the Moors is abundant and can be seen in the remains of the old walls, the Almirante bath house and the tower, el Miguelete, which was the minaret of the old mosque.

For centuries, Genoa has been a major commercial seaport. Today, it is one of Italy's largest cities. Genoa is located in northwestern Italy, in the inner harbor of the Gulf of Genoa. For a show unlike any you've seen before, check out the world's largest astronomical clock, Orologio Astronomico, in the Piazza del Duomo. It's set in a 197-foot bell tower and when the clock strikes noon, it comes to life. As Ave Maria begins playing from a loudspeaker, the bronze mechanical figures start to move. A lion roars, a bird flaps its wings, and two historical heroines take turns ringing the bell, all before it ends with a statue of Jesus appearing from a tomb.

Take a walk through the Duomo, the town's main cathedral in the Piazza del Duomo. Although most of it has been refurbished in recent years, it has retained some of the original Norman-style features from 1160, when it was built by the Holy Roman emperor Henry VI.
Make a wish in the Fontana di Orione in the center of the piazza. The pre-baroque-style fountain was built to commemorate Messina's aqueduct and symbolizes the four rivers, Tiber, Nile, Ebore and Camaro.

The most outstanding monument of Zadar is, unquestionably, the former church of St. Donat dedicated to the Trinity. The church named after the bishop Donat from the begining of the 9th century, who is beleived to have had erected it, was first recorded in the celebrated work by Byzantine emperor Constantine Porfirogrenetus on the management of a state. Drawing upon the early Byzantine tradition, the edifice was built in the early Middle Ages, most probbably at the begining of the 9th century, as legend has it. It has a circular ground-plan and, like several other buildings of its kind built around Europe at the same period, a double space. Yet, it is a wholly original project for which there exists no prototype. Unfortunately, its original appereance has not been preserved and it now appears devoin of its former south annex. As a consequence, on this side its central volume results visible from outside. The church, leaning on the early Christian Cathedral now makes part of the episcopal complex.
