About Panama City
Spain settled Panama City in 1519 on the site of an Indian fishing village. Gold and other valuable goods often passed overland through the city to the Caribbean, making Panama a target for thieves. In 1671 British Pirate Henry Morgan tore through town, leaving behind total ruins. Two years later, Panama was rebuilt on a nearby site. The city was still ravaged repeatedly until 1746, when the trade route was changed. Panamas independence came in 1903, and Panama City was declared the capital. After the Panama Canal was completed in 1914, the city became an important international business centre.

The sights of Panama City are many, but much of it can be seen on foot. The Plaza de Francia is dedicated to the 22,000 workers who perished while building the Panama Canal. The ruins of the Church of Santo Domingo features an arch that has stood unsupported for hundreds of years. The golden altar of the Church of San Jose is the only original piece of architecture that remained completely in tact after the Pirate Henry Morgan destroyed the city. There are many museums to explore in Panama City including: the newly restored Museum of Religious Art; the Museum of the History of Panama; the Atnthropology Museum; and the Museum of Natural Science. At Panama Viejo, view all the remains of the city's original site.

Trinidad was discovered by Columbus during his third voyage. The Caribe Indians from South America were its first inhabitants, soon joined by the Spanish, the English and the African slaves brought to work the cane, cacao and cotton fields. Home to not only calypso, Trinidad is credited with inventing the "pan" or steel drum.
Overlooking the northern shores of the great Amazon Delta, where this powerful river reaches out to the sea, is the waterfront town of Macapa. The charming city of Santarem is centered around its bustling port. Sail along the tributaries of the Tapajos River for a breathtaking look at the jungle, or head for the Mercado Modelo, the open-air market in the center of town.

While not a tourist hot spot, Santarem’s location between Belem and Manaus provides a natural stopover on any Amazon trip. Apart from observing the activities in the port, you can explore the narrow streets of the old town and watch the “Meeting of the Waters” from a viewpoint at the town’s outskirts.
Boca de means “mouth of” and is an entrance of the Valeria River, located on the south bank on a 400ft hill and overlooking the Amazon. It is located between Parintins and Santarem.

This turn-of-the-century city, once the booming center of the rubber trade, is a highlight of your Amazon cruise. Its showplace is the grandly restored 1896 opera house, Teatro Amazonas, a neo-classical masterpiece of French iron-work, Italian marble, and Louis XV furnishings. The stage curtain depicts an allegory of Manauss most spectacular natural landmark, the "wedding of the waters" where the Negro and Soliomes Rivers join to form the Amazon. Shopping will find a wide range of items in Manaus.

Teatro Amazonas Opera House - A symbol of the early 1920s rubber boom, this Neo-classical Opera House was built entirely of materials imported from Europe, and once hosted the world's finest operatic performers. Amazon Village - Located in the heart of the jungle, this exclusive lodge serves as your base for a trek or canoe journey into the rain forest.Indian Museum - Operated by Salesian missionaries, this museum features superb displays, exhibits, artifacts and ritual objects from the indigenous tribes of the Amazon.
Cathedrals and churches play a prominent role in the city'scape of Parintins, reflective of the importance of faith in the citizens' lives. The scale is appropriate to a central Amazon River town of only 50,000—much smaller than the nearby state capital of Manaus. Parintins is located in the river itself, on an island of the same name.
Parintins Attractions
There is no road to Parintins. It is accessible either by river or by air. Here they celebrate the famous Boi Bumba Festival, similar to Rio´s Carnival. Local factions vie to produce the most fabulous costumes, dancing and songs.
A little bit of heaven, located just southwest of Santarem on the snow-white beaches of the Tapajos River and Green Lake. Swim in the clear waters, explore Green Lake, or visit the rubber plantations in the surrounding area.

Exploring the islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique is only a click away. There are a variety of tours offered by local operators many of which can be booked online or through your travel agent or hotel. Must see trips visit various attractions including The Grand Etang Forest Reserve and Lake, Waterfalls, Spice Estates and Plantation Houses. A visit to a Rum Distillery is a must to see how the Sugar Cane juice is turned into Rum, in many cases using the original technology and equipment from days gone by.
St. George's Attractions
Visit one of Grenada's extinct volcanoes in the Grand Etang Forest Reserve and Lake. The lake is actually a natural water-filled crater and the surrounding vegetation is simply amazing, filled with tropical birds and rare flowers.

Dutch settlers came here in the 1630s, about the same time they sailed through the Verazzano Narrows to Manhattan, bringing with them original red-tile roofs, first used on the trade ships as ballast and later incorporated into the architecture of Willemstad. Much of the original colonial structures remain, but this historic city is constantly reinventing itself and the government monument foundation is always busy restoring buildings in one urban neighborhood or another. The salty air causes what is called "wall cancer" which causes the ancient abodes to continually crumble over time. The city is cut in two by Santa Anna Bay. On one side is Punda (the point)—crammed with shops, restaurants, monuments, and markets and a new museum retracing its colorful history. And on the other side is Otrobanda (literally meaning the "other side"), with lots of narrow, winding streets and alleyways (called "steekjes" in Dutch), full of private homes notable for their picturesque gables and Dutch-influenced designs. In recent years the ongoing regeneration of Otrobanda has been apparent, marked by a surge in development of new hotels, restaurants, and shops; the rebirth, concentrated near the waterfront, was spearheaded by the creation of the elaborate Kura Hulanda complex.There are three ways to cross the bay: by car over the Juliana Bridge; by foot over the Queen Emma pontoon bridge (locally called "The Swinging Old Lady"); or by free ferry, which runs when the pontoon bridge is swung open for passing ships. All the major hotels outside town offer free shuttle service to town once or twice daily. Shuttles coming from the Otrobanda side leave you at Riffort. From here it's a short walk north to the foot of the pontoon bridge. Shuttles coming from the Punda side leave you near the main entrance to Ft. Amsterdam.
