Once a stop for sailing ships rounding Cape Horn, Punta Arenas is the largest city in lower Patagonia. Local museums, housed in former mansions, honor the area´a cultural and natural history. Savor seafood specialties or seek out wood and shell carvings in the duty-free zone. Explore the town and its history and enjoy stunning views over the Strait of Magellan to fabled Tierra del Fuego. The Falklands are a remote and beautiful group of islands with a temperate climate, warm and friendly people of British decent, unbelievably rich wildlife, colorful homes and gardens, and a unique way of life. There is a surprising variety of scenery with rolling moorlands, grassy plains dotted with lakes, mountains over 2000 feet high, and a magnificent coastline with wide white beaches and dramatic bluffs.
Located in the Falkland Islands, West Point Island offers visitors dramatic and stunning coastal scenery of high cliffs, the highest of which is more than 1,200 feet tall. Many bird species call the island home, including albatross, Rockhopper penguins and Imperial Cormorants. The island’s gardens and impressive landscapers are ideal for hiking and taking photos.
Dramatic cliffs, windswept rolling hills and sandy beaches make a scenic home for the Falkland´s countless waterfowl and 2,000 hearty British descendents. Shop for woolens and crafts on Port Stanley´s main street or sample the diddle-dee jelly with afternoon tea.
Port Stanley Attractions
Good walkers can explore Stanley easily on foot. Major sites, such as t he cathedral, the museum at Britannia House and the Battle Memorial are included in the organized excursions; they also can be visited on your own. A stroll along a section of the waterfront will show you the hulks of old sailing ships. Key points are marked with interpretive signs.
The Antarctic Sound is a stretch of water named after the first ship to have passed through this body of water from the Bransfield Strait to the Weddell Sea in 1902. The Antarctic eventually sank and crew and scientists had to spend quite some time in this area before they could be rescued. Sites that have to do with this story - like Hope Bay or Paulet Island - are sometimes visited. At Paulet, Hope Bay and Brown Bluff Adelie and Gentoo Penguins breed, as do Kelp Gulls and Cape Petrels, Snow Petrels and Skuas. The Sound’s main attractions are the spectacular tabular icebergs that come from the Larsen Ice Shelf further south.

A famous body of water in the Antarctic Peninsula, The Gerlache Strait is a must see for many people visiting this part of the Antarctic on board an Antarctic Cruise due to its spiky blue icebergs, humpback whale spotting, snow and mountains. It can be found between Anvers Island and the Danco Coast and is usually visited en route to Neko Bay or the Lemaire Channel where ships cross the Antarctic Circle at 66 degress.
