For cruise vessels, the port provides the gateway for excursions to famed Petra and the spectacular desert and mountain region of Wadi Rum. Aqaba itself offers a string of shops, hotels and restaurants. Some recent archaeological discoveries in the center of town are thought to be the remains of the oldest church in the world, dating from the late 3rd century. Aqaba is also popular with diving enthusiasts who appreciate the great variety of marine life that abounds in the waters of the Red Sea.

Petra, the area's major attraction, lies 70 miles from the port. The remains of this once magnificent city date to the 3rd century BC when Nabataeans carved elaborate buildings out of solid rock. Abandoned and forgotten for centuries, the rose-red City of Petra was rediscovered in the 1800s. Excavations did not get underway until a hundred years later; the central section was unearthed after 1958. Today the site is recognized as one of the most spectacular attractions in the Middle East - a must-see for any visitor to this area.
Held by the Portuguese for almost 400 years, Muscat is built around an old Portuguese fort and the Sultan´s palace. At the ancient Muttrah souk, antiques, colorful textiles and spices are sold.

Residents point to an ancient gnarled tree said to be ´the Tree of Life´ from the Garden of Eden. In fact, Bahrain´s many bubbling springs have made the island more fertile than most Arab states. The city of Manama features a magnificent mosque and an excellent archaeological museum, revealing that Bahrain´s roots as an important tading power go very far back in time.

Bait Al-Qur’an - Located in Manama, the "House of Qur’an" is characterized by a most distinct Islamic design. It is home to a rare collection of Islamic manuscripts, prints and books that have been collected from all over the world.
Oil Well Museum - This museum was built to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first discovery of oil in the Arabian Gulf. It houses exhibits of old photographs, drilling equipment and a working model of an oilrig.
A’Ali Burial Mounds - Located in the vicinity of Al A’Ali village, these burial mounds - once as many as 170,000 - date to around 2000 B.C. and form the largest prehistoric cemetery in the world. The village is also known for its pottery workshops. Some of the designs have been handed down unchanged since the late Dilmun era, 3,000 years ago.
Saar Settlement - This archaeological site is the most recent discovery of the Dilmun era and consists of residential dwellings that were inhabited by the Dilmunite people 4,000 years ago. Other discoveries on this site include the Saar temple and a unique type of tombs labeled "interconnected tombs."
The Tree of Life - Standing along in the desert, this well-matured tree has raised the curiosity of visitors and specialists alike for many years. It remains a mystery where the tree draws its water, as there is no known water source. The location is south of Oil Well Number One.
Abu Dhabi is the capital and the second most populous city in the United Arab Emirates and also capital of the largest of the UAE's seven member emirates. Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city proper had a population of 921,000 in 2013.
Abu Dhabi houses federal government offices, is the seat of the United Arab Emirates Government, home to the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family and the President of the UAE, who is from this family. Abu Dhabi has grown to be a cosmopolitan metropolis. One of the most important architectural landmarks is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. This is arguably one of the most important architectural treasures of contemporary UAE society—and one of the most opulent in the world. It was initiated by the late president of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, fondly thought of as the father of the UAE.
Its design and construction reportedly 'unites the world', using artisans and materials from many countries including Italy, Germany, Morocco, India, Turkey, Iran, China, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Greece and of course the United Arab Emirates. More than 3,000 workers and 38 renowned contracting companies took part in the construction of the mosque. Natural materials were chosen for much of its design and construction due to their long-lasting qualities, including marble, stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics. Construction began on 5 November 1996. The maximum capacity is approximately 41,000 people and the overall structure is 22,412 square metres, the internal prayer halls were initially opened in December 2007.
As one of the most visited buildings in the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center was established to manage the day-to-day operations, as a place of worship and Friday gathering and as a centre of learning and discovery through its education and visitor programs.

Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. The city proper had a population of 921,000 in 2013.
Abu Dhabi houses federal government offices, is the seat of the United Arab Emirates Government, home to the Abu Dhabi Emiri Family and the President of the UAE, who is from this family. Abu Dhabi has grown to be a cosmopolitan metropolis. Its rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the relatively high average income of its population, has transformed Abu Dhabi to a larger and advanced metropolis. Today the city is the country's center of political and industrial activities, and a major cultural and commercial centre, due to its position as the capital. Abu Dhabi alone generated 56.7% of the GDP of the United Arab Emirates in 2008.
