Shetland Islands, archipelago, 552 sq mi (1,427 sq km), off N Scotland. They consist of c.100 islands c.70 mi (110 km) long, about a fourth of which are inhabited. The largest are Mainland (where Lerwick, the main town, is located), Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsey, and Bressay. Oil, produced offshore in the North Sea since the 1970s, supplements income
from traditional sheep, cattle, and knitware industries. Tourism is also important. The hardy Shetland pony and the Shetland sheepdog originated there. Occupied by Norsemen by the 9th cent., the islands were annexed to Scotland in 1472. Fishing is plentiful here, and the rocky cliffs offset by vast colonies of gannets and gulls make for breathtaking scenery.
Just 10 miles off the coast of Northern Scotland is Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, an area rich in wildlife and archaeological sites. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850, and the site reveals that Orkneys were inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Attractions
The islands are virtually a museum of prehistoric times. Rock circles, cairns, standing stones, ancient tombs and prehistoric villages are scattered about, gaining these islands international recognition. The Orkneys are also a paradise for bird watchers, with a myriad of puffins, eider ducks, whooper swans and arctic terns. These birds, as well as many other species, nest here during the summer months.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Activities
St. Magnus Cathedral - The massive, Norman-style cathedral was dedicated by its founder, Earl Rognvald, to his murdered kinsman, Earl Magnus, in the 12th century.
Bishop's Palace - Only the walls and the tower of this 12th-century residence, built for Bishop William of Old, still stand. A narrow, spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, affording a great view of the cathedral and across Kirkwall's rooftops.
Earl's Palace - Better preserved than the Bishop's Palace, the neighboring Earl's Palace dates to 1600. Its style blends medieval fierceness with the ornate elements of French Renaissance architecture. It features dank dungeons, massive fireplaces and a magnificent central hall. Excellent exhibits explain the use of the various rooms; they provide insight into the life of the earl and the manner in which he conducted his ruthless business.
Highland Park - A good mile south of town is this "most northerly legal distillery in Scotland." In operation for 200 years, it closed only once, during World War II when it was used as a military store.

Stroll through the beautiful grounds of Lews Castle which dominates the town. Or visit the Standing Stones of Callanish, a 40-foot prehistoric circle of stones often compared to Stonehenge.

The southern strip of the Cornish coast holds a string of medieval harbor towns. Some of these appear somewhat tarnished due to various degrees of commercialization, but there are still spots where one can experience the best of Cornwall. The estuary town of Fowey (pronounced Foy) is one.
Fowey Activities
St. Fimbarrus Church - Fowey’s steep layout centers around this church, which features a distinctive 15th-century building and marks the traditional end of the ancient 30-mile Saints’ Way from Padstow.
Place House - This extravagant building with a victorian gothic tower grafted on to the 15th-century fortified building stands just behind the church.
The Esplanade - This popular walkway leads to a footpath which eventually provides access to some splendid walks around the coast.
Lostwithiel - Just a few miles out of Fowey lies this appealing mixture of georgian houses and dark cobbled passageways, with a peculiar Breton-inspired octagonal spire on St. Bartholomew’s church. Looming over this old market town is Restormel Castle, a shale-built shell of a circular keep that crowns a hill one mile north of Lostwithiel.
Cobblestone streets, blooming floral displays, and tiny churches welcome you to this wonderfully pretty harbour. The town of St Peter Port is as pretty as they come, with glowing flower displays painting practically every street corner and window-ledge with colour. As the capital, and main port of Guernsey, St Peter Port puts all of the island’s gorgeous beaches, wonderful history and inspiring stories at your fingertips. Feel the gut punch of the midday gun firing at Castle Cornet, which stands guard over one of the world's prettiest ports. This 800-year-old, Medieval castle offers staggering views of the harbour from its imposing, craggy island location, and you can look out across to the looming shorelines of the other Channel Islands from its weathered battlements. With four well-tended gardens, and five museums offering a rich overview of Guernsey's history, you’ll want to leave a few hours aside to explore the many treasures that lie within the castle’s walls.
Located on the southern bank of the Seine River, opposite Le Havre and less than an hour from Rouen, the town of Honfleur is the most picturesque of all of Normandys seaports, attracting artists for centuries. A yachting, tourist and small fishing center, its 17th-century harbor is surrounded by 15th- and 16th-century buildings. The town has been made more accessible with the addition of the Pont de Normandie bridge, which links Honfleur directly to Le Havre.
Ijmuiden is a port of Amsterdam and part of the gemeente (municipality) of Velsen, western Netherlands. The port is situated at the western end of the North Sea (Noordzee) Canal, which was opened in 1876. IJmuiden is also an industrial center with fertilizer and cement factories, and it is an important fishing port with a government fish market. Three huge locks at IJmuiden link the canal to the North Sea. Two breakwaters project seaward from the canal mouth for nearly 1 mile (1.6 km). Used as a base for German torpedo boats in World War II, its facilities were damaged by Allied bombing but have since been rebuilt.
