About Bordeaux
Sixty-one miles up the Garonne River, lies the port of Bordeaux, the capital of France´s wine country. The Romans were the first to introduce grapes into the region, and by the 14th century Bordeaux was producing over one million cases a year. Journey through the hilly countryside to the picturesque village of St Emillion and taste the wines that have made this region famous.
Bordeaux Attractions
Surrounding Bordeaux are the world-renowned vineyards and wine châteaux. Visitors from all over the globe come here to learn about the wine-making process - from growing the grapes to the harvesting, fermentation and bottling of top-quality wines. The city’s single most important economic activity is centered around the marketing and exporting of the region’s prestigious wines. Many travelers come here for the single purpose of visiting the cellars of esteemed châteaux and sampling the product. However, one has to keep in mind, that the title "château" can mean anything from a palatial residence to a basic winery. There are thousands of wine châteaux scattered through the countryside, ranging from very modest family establishments to celebrated properties – but all are dedicated to producing the area’s renowned wines.
Bordeaux Activities
Place de la Bourse - You can’t miss this impressive square just opposite from the pier. The square was laid out in the mid-18th century and is flanked by the old Customs House and the Stock Exchange.
Rue Ste. Catherine - This half-mile-long pedestrian street leads through the Old Town’s major shopping area and marks the beginning of the elegant 18th-century city.
Old Town - Discover the charm of the Old Town with its narrow streets and quaint squares lined by typical Bordelais mansions that have been tastefully renovated. Today many are occupied by small shops, restaurants and cafés.
St. André Cathédrale - You may want to visit this imposing Gothic cathedral. Its historic fame dates to 1137 when Eleanor of Aquitaine was married in this church to the future King Louis VII.
Grand Théâtre - Facing the Place de la Comédie stands this neo-classical theater. Its elegant exterior is ringed by graceful Corinthian columns and pilasters.The theater was the hub of 18th-century Bordeaux.
Aquitaine Museum - This imaginatively laid out museum is well worth your visit. An interesting variety of exhibits cover the main facets of the region’s development. Drawings and writings on the period illustrate why 18th-century Bordeaux was often compared to Paris.
Musée des Beaux Arts - Behind the luxurious Hôtel de Ville (city hall), this fine art museum has an impressive collection of 17th-century paintings by Flemish, Dutch and Italian masters as well as works by Delacroix.
La Rochelle was once known as the French Geneva and today the comparisons are still being made. Thanks to its famous city lights, La Rochelle has been called the "City of Light," much like Paris itself. But to anyone visiting this bustling seaport, La Rochelle has its distinct charm.
La Rochelle Attractions
La Rochelle's main feature is the "Vieux Port" ("Old Harbour"), which is at the heart of the city, picturesque and lined with seafood restaurants. The city walls are open to an evening promenade. The old town has been well-preserved. From the harbour, boating trips can be taken to the Île d'Aix and Fort Boyard. Nearby Île de Ré is a short drive to the North. The countryside of the surrounding Charente-Maritime is very rural and full of history. To the North is Venise Verte, a marshy area of country, criss-crossed with tiny canals and a popular resort for inland boating. Inland is the country of Cognac and Pineau.
La Rochelle Activities
Aquarium. One of La Rochelle’s top tourist attractions houses around 10,000 arranged over two floors. Downstairs is a shop, the atlantic room, the Oceanic area with its barracuda, jacks and rays, and the Mediterranean cave home to spirographs and a giant octopus. Upstairs is the shark tank which allows visitors the chance to get close to many different species of this impressive animal. There are also Caribbean tanks, an Indo-Pacific room, the Lagoon, an amphitheatre and an interactive learning area.
Ile de Re. A short distance from the centre of La Rochelle and accesible by bus is the Ile de Re. The island is popular with local residents who wish to escape the city. The town of Saint Martin de Re which is considered the island’s capital has some fine restaurants and wineries. Elsewhere Ile de Re boasts miles of cycle paths, vineyards, deserted beaches, pine woods and salt water marshes. Musee de Beaux-Arts. Housed in an 18th century Episcopal palace, the museum displays pieces from the 15th to the 20th century and includes works by artists such as Maillol, Leger and Fromentin.
City Hall. This fine 14th century structure is built in a Gothic style. The City Hall can only be visited by a guided tour which must be booked in advance, but it is well worth it for the fine Henry II staircase and Jean Guitton’s marble desk.
Towers. The port of La Rochelle is guarded by several towers. The oldest one is Tour St Nicholas which was constructed between 1371 and 1382. This must-see attraction offers superb views from the top of the tower over the old town and the island of Ile d’Oleron in the distance. Close by is the Tour de la Lanterne constructed between 1445 and 1446. Formerly a lighthouse, the tower was also used as a jail until the 19th century.
Musee du Nouveau Monde. This museum celebrates La Rochelle’s 300-year long relationship with the New World when many products such as fur, coffee, sugar, cocoa and slaves were traded in the town. The exhibition tracing the 1682 discovery of the Mississippi Delta by La Salle is particularly interesting.
Although governed by England, the tiny island of Guernesey is actually closer in culture, climate and location to France. Victor Hugo lived here in exile from 1855 to 1870 and wrote the masterpiece "Les Miserables."
Cherbourg is gateway to one of the most photographed sights in France - lofty Mont St Michel. Begun by Bishop Aubert of Avranches in 708, the slender steeple piercing the firmament is a powerful statement of Norman/Romanesque religious fervor. Belfast, Northern Ireland Activities
The Botanic Gardens Park, located between The Queen's University and Ulster Museum, features the Palm House and Tropical Ravine. Established in 1828, the gardens have been opened to the public since 1895.
On the north coast is the geological phenomenon of the Giant's Causeway, where a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago formed columns of layered basalt. Ancient legend suggests this was the work of the giant Finn McCool, the Ulster warrior and commander of the king of Ireland's armies.
Fort William is the largest town in the highlands of Scotland and second largest settlement behind the city of Inverness.
Fort William is a major tourist center with Glen Coe just to the south, and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is an important center for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains, marketing itself as the "Outdoor Capital of the UK". It is also well known for its nearby famous Downhill Mountain Bike Track and its connection to the West Highland Way from Glasgow and the Great Glen Way; a walk/cycle way from Inverness to Fort William through the Great Glen.
The Outer Hebrides lie like a protective arc off the northern coast of Scotland, mountainous islands with dramatic seacapes and far more sheep than people. Stornoway, with its huge fishing harbor, is the capital of the Lewis and Harris islands, famous for its rugged fishermen and the tweed which bears its name. Stroll through the beautiful grounds of Lews Castle which dominates the town. Or visit the Standing Stones of Callanish, a 40-foot prehistoric circle of stones often compared to Stonehenge.
