Trincomalee is a port city in Eastern Province, Sri Lanka and lies on the east coast of the island, about 113 miles south of Jaffna. Overlooking the Kottiyar Bay, Trincomalee is one of the main centers of Tamil speaking culture on the island. The city is home to the famous ancient Koneswaram temple alluded to in its historic Tamil name Thirukonamalai from which its anglicized name is derived, and has been a sea port that has played a major role in the maritime and international trading history of Sri Lanka. The Bay of Trincomalee's harbour is renowned for its large size and security; unlike every other in the Indian Sea, it is accessible to all types of craft in all weathers. The beaches are used for surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. The city also has the largest Dutch fort in Sri Lanka. It is home to major Sri Lankan naval bases and a Sri Lankan Air Force base.
Built by the Dutch beginning in 1663, the 36-hectare Fort occupies most of the promontory that forms the older part of Galle. Described by the notoriously hard-to-please Paul Theroux as being ‘garlanded with red hibiscus and smelling of the palm-scented ocean, ’ the Fort is an amazing collection of structures and culture dating back through the centuries. Just wandering the streets at random yields one architectural surprise after another. And be sure to take in the dramatic views of town and ocean from the encircling walls. Unesco has recognized Fort as a World Heritage Site.
Colombo, Sri Lanka's political, economic and cultural center with around one million inhabitants is the island's largest city and major port. Visiting Colombo provides some insight into what makes Sri Lanka tick. Its history goes back many centuries and relics of Portuguese, Dutch and English settlements blend with Indian influences for a unique cultural mix. The center, known as "Fort," can easily be explored on foot. Adjacent to the "Fort" spreads Colombo's bustling bazaar area, known as the Pettah.

Dehiwala Zoo - Located about six miles from the center of Colombo, this zoo is one of the most attractive in Asia. Thirty-seven acres of undulating grounds are beautifully laid out with shrubs, flowering trees, plants, orchids, lakes and fountains. More than 2,000 animals include sloth, leopard, civets and other small cats, lizards, crocodiles and snakes. The zoo is also home to lions, tigers, jaguars, black panthers and many other exotic species. A troupe of trained elephants can be observed every afternoon.
