About Athens (Piraeus)
Piraeus is the port of Athens. Serving as the gateway to the past and civilization as we know it, Athens is far more than the Acropolis. Nowhere on earth are mans past accomplishments more dramatically displayed as a backdrop to a modern metropolis. Spend time exploring ancient ruins, viewing incalculable treasures or just relax as another day evolves in the cradle of civilization.
Athens (Piraeus) Attractions
No visit to Athens would be complete without a visit to the Acropolis. There you'll find the Parthenon, the largest building in the Acropolis and one of the world's most awe-inspiring sights. It was built as a temple to Athena and is still a remarkable structure today.
Athens (Piraeus) Activities
Visit Plaka, the old neighborhood of Athens. Explore the narrow streets and alleys, single-story houses, neoclassical villas, taverns and many tourist shops.
Experience the traditional flea market of Monastiraki, the neighborhood next to Plaka.
Explore the National Archaeological Museum, home to a formidable collection of the world's antiquities.
Pay a visit to ancient Agora, ancient site of the religious and political heart of Athens.
The Archaeological Museum is known to have the finest collection of Greek art in the world. Exhibits include the sensational finds from the excavations at Mycenae and the remarkably well preserved frescoes from a 3,000-year-old civilization discovered at Akrotiri on the island of Santorini. There are also classical statuary, pottery, stone carvings and jewelry from excavations throughout Greece.
The Benaki Museum has recently undergone thorough modernization. Its three floors house more than 30,000 items, all illustrating the character of the Greek world.
Located near Kolonaki, the Goulandris Museum features a fantastic collection of Cycladic and ancient art spanning 5,000 years. The exhibits were assembled by ship owner Nikolaos P. Goulandris. Its treasures include many of the slim marble figurines that fascinated artists like Picasso and Modigliani.
Mount Lycabettus, Athens' highest hill, is only a 10-minute walk from Syntagma Square. It borders the fashionable Kolonaki residential area. A steeply inclined funicular climbs to the summit, which is crowned by a small, white chapel. Pollution permitting, the view from Mount Lycabettus is the finest in Athens.
Plaka stretches east from the Agora, this lovely quarter, with winding alleys, neo-classical buildings, whitewashed, bougainvillea-framed houses and tiny churches, is worth your exploration.
Agios Eleftherios is a 12th-century Byzantine church and Athens' former cathedral is known for the fanciful figures and zodiac signs that adorn its walls.
In 1530, Charles V of Spain granted the island of Malta to the Knights of the Order of St. John. Many impressive 16th-century limestone buildings and fortifications from the Knights have endured, helping make the city of Valetta simply magnificent to experience today.
Valletta Attractions
Explore the city's main square and pass many of its ancient buildings. Then head to St. John's Cathedral, founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John during the 16th century. Today the cathedral is the final resting place for many of the knights - their headstones line the cathedral floor.
Valletta Activities
Visit the Armory, St, John's Co-Cathedral, and the 18th century Manoel Theater for some more spectacular sights.
Visit the National Museum of Archaeology. It houses collections of pottery, sculpture, statuettes, stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other prehistoric sites.
Explore the Palace of the Grand Masters, completed in 1574. It contains portraits of the Grand Masters of the Order and European monarchs, interesting furniture and other works of art.
Stroll through the Upper Barrakka Gardens and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of Grand Harbour.
Tunisia's capital lies at the western end of the shallow Lake Tunis, which opens to the sea at La Goulette. This is the first of a string of beach suburbs that stretches away to the north; it is here that the city's port is located. This coastal area includes the ruins of ancient Carthage and the picturesque suburb of Sidi Bou Said, places that attract more visitors than Tunis itself. As far as capital cities go, Tunis has an easy-going, unhurried air about it. It is a very liberal city by Islamic standards and certainly leading the way in Western trends for the rest of the country.
La Goulette Attractions
A visit to the Bardo Museum is a must. Housed in an old palace, the museum is renowned as the best in the country. Organized in sections, it features an impressive display of artifacts covering the Carthaginian, Roman, Palaeo-Christian and Arab-Islamic eras. The Roman mosaics are among the finest collections anywhere in the world.
La Goulette Activities
Kasbah Mosque - On a rise at the western edge of the medina, the 13th-century mosque stands on an enormous open square beautifully paved with local granite.
Beaches - One of the best beaches is found at La Marsa. Others are at Amilcar and La Goulette. La Marsa is also one of the most exclusive residential suburbs, with upscale cafés and restaurants.
Almeria, despite its rugged landscape and shortage of fertile soil, has managed, with a good irrigation system, to become an important growth area and it is well known for the quality of its oranges and white grapes, most of which are exported from its port. As you drive through the province you will see an endless sea of polythene tunnels, crammed with produce. The area is almost totally dependent on this industry. The province of Almeria may initially appear to be a barren desert-like landscape but on close inspection you will find it to be the Andalucian province with the longest stretch of beaches. Empty beaches and tiny hidden coves with perfectly clear water. Because of the diverse landscapes, the range of sports activities is endless from water sports to hiking, paragliding, horse riding and golf.
Almeria Attractions
For the visitor to Almeria, the sightseeing choices are many. You can choose a visit to a white-washed desert village with handicraft stalls and narrow streets, or tour Granada's famous Alhambra, pleasure palace of the Emirs, where it seems that every inch is adorned with lacy scrollwork or gleaming tiles, and every garden has a serene pool and sparkling fountain.
Cadiz is the western worlds oldest inhabited city with shores bathed by both the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Tiny villages are scattered at random along golden beaches and up twisting mountain roads leading to romantic Seville. Visit Sanlucar de Barrameda where Magellan began his voyage around the world and Jerez de la Frontera, home of the worlds finest sherry.
Cadiz Attractions
The cathedral in Cádiz is by far its best-known landmark. It was built in the 18th century with gold imported from the New World. There is also a museum with a breathtaking, and priceless, collection of gold, silver and jewels, and the crypt of the great Cádiz-born composer Manuel de Falla.
Cadiz Activities
Stroll through the charming Plaza de Mina, lined with sidewalk cafés and remarkable architecture. It's also home to the Fine Arts and Archaeology Museum.
Climb to the top of the Torre Tavira, one of the 160 watchtowers built in the 18th century, for a view of the entire city.
Relax on one of the beautiful white-sand beaches.
Visit the Oratorio de Santa Cruz church, home to several paintings by Francisco Goya.
Take in the scenery. With water surrounding the city on three sides, Cadiz is famous for its breathtaking landscapes and ocean views.
In Portimao, a fishing port since Roman times, you can sample fresh local seafood in harborside cafes, climb among huge, oddly-shaped rocks carved by waves or journey to Sagres, where Prince Henry´s school of navigation still stands on a rocky promontory pointing toward the beckoning Atlantic.
Portimao Attractions
Although it lacks great monuments and museums, Portimao is worth exploring. Just wander through its colorful streets, stopping at any sight that interests you. The once-colorful fishing boats used to unload their catch here at the port but have moved to a terminal across the river. High-rise buildings ring the area, but the core of the old town is still intact.
Lisbon is a city of great character and endearing charisma. Located in a hilly region at the mouth of the Tagus, the city retains an old world flair with cobbled alleyways in Alfama, the old town. Competing with the elegant avenues of Alto where sorrowful "fado" music fills the evening air is the Chiado, Lisbons affluent shopping district.
Lisbon Attractions
Don't miss the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, or Jeronimo's Monastery. Commissioned in 1501 after Vasco da Gama's return from his voyage, this remarkable monastery is a beautiful and unique example of Manueline architecture.
Lisbon Activities
Explore the streets of Lisbon from Rossio Square to the main thoroughfare, the Avenida da Liberdade. Visit the monastery and the Maritime Museum, which houses miniature boats and original maps chronicling the history of navigation from the Middle Ages to today.
Visit Sintra, considered one of the most beautiful palaces in Portugal. It was once the summer residence of Portuguese kings and aristocrats.
Walk through the charming village of Fatima, where numerous sightings of the blessed Virgin Mary have been reported.

French and Islamic influences merge in this fascinating old city of mosques and minarets, casbahs and modern boulevards. From the shadowy streets of the marketplace to the open vistas in the nparks above, Tangier offers a sharp, remarkable taste of Morocco.
The Balearic Islands lie scattered in the western Mediterranean off the southeast coast of Spain. Regular ferry service connects the principal islands of the archipelago with the mainland. Through history, the three main islands, Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca, were the object of invasion by outside powers. Moorish forces arrived during the 8th century and established their hold until the disintegration of the Caliphate of Cordoba. James I of Aragon gained control over these specks of land in 1229, only to see them integrated into the independent kingdom of Mallorca in 1276. Later they were returned to the Aragonese crown. Today, invasions occur daily at airports and yacht harbors around the islands. The alluring mild climate attracts scores of northern Europeans who grow weary of cloudy days and cold temperatures. They come here to enjoy the sunshine and the beaches; at night they fill the clubs until the early morning hours. The name Ibiza has become synonymous with pleasure seeking.
Ibiza Attractions
As your ship pulls into the port of Eivissa (also known as Ibiza Town), you will have a fine view of the impressive fortifications. An easy stroll along the cobbled streets takes you to the lively downtown area of shops and restaurants. D'Alt Vila, the old town dominates the port and seafront. With its historic buildings and stately mansions, D'Alt Vila is the very heart of Eivissa. Step inside the cool recesses of the 13th-century Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Nieves (Our Lady of the Snows) or visit the Archaeological Museum, where the island’s history is well represented. As the sun arcs overhead, pause in an outdoor cafe for a glass of chilled Ibizan sangria.
Ibiza Activities
Ses Salines - The salt extracted here provided the base for one of the first industries on the island; ships still arrive at Ses Salines to load salt. This is also a popular beach area, located six miles from town. Puig d’en Valls - The 18th-century windmill of Puig d’en Valls shows the importance of windmills in the development of Ibiza. There is a fine panoramic view over Ibiza Town from here. Cala Portinaitx - This beautiful bay offers numerous attractions. The beaches are sheltered from the open sea by a much-eroded rock barrier, usually lashed with heavy surf. Museum of Contemporary Art - This museum, housed in the fortress of D'Alt Vila, features contemporary Spanish paintings and sculptures.

At nearby Avignon, visit the magmificient Palace of the Popes and the hilltop Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde. Explore ruins of 13th century Palais Longchamps and colorful "Old Harbour" where you can browse open-air markets.
Marseille Attractions
For the best view of the city, there's only one place to go: Notre Dame de la Garde. Entirely covered in gold leaf, it towers over Marseille at an impressive 500 feet tall (154 meters.) Throughout the years, it has served as a lookout post, a military zone and a place of worship.
