The name Kangerlussuaq means "Big Fjord" in the local Kalaallisut language. The settlement of about 500 people is located in western Greenland on flat land at the head of a fjord with the same name. Kangerlussuaq is the site of Greenland's largest commercial airport and most of the economy here is dependent on the air transportation hub and tourism. The rugged lands around the settlement support terrestrial Arctic fauna including muskoxen, caribou, and Gyrfalcons.
Disko Bay, with its fantastic natural features, is a favorite travel destination for many people. The bay has everything you associate with Greenland: midnight sun, enormous icebergs from the world's longest fjord, an abundance of windlife and the famous typical characteristic is the incredible number of days with mirror-like water throughout the bay. Not without reason, Disko Bay has been referred to by all the famous Greenlandic poets and songwriters and it is often mentioned in our own legends and myths. Disko Bay has always attracted the most visitors who come to Greenland.
The Arctic climate af Sisimiut has a temperature range of up to 20 degrees Celsius in the summer and down to - 35 degrees Celsius in the winter. Sisimiut is the most northern icefree town in the winter and the most southern town for dog-sledging. The main trade is fishing. Small and large trawlers and as well as cutters have their main port in Sisimiut. They fish shrimps, salmon, Greenland Halibut and cod. Hunting is also another mean of livelihood. Animals that are normally hunted are seals, walrus, Beluga Whale, narwhale, reindeer and musk oxen. The Royal Greenland factory is the largest within Greenland and is also the most modern shrimp-shelling factory in the world.
Located at the tip of the Great Northern Peninsula of the island of Newfoundland, L'Anse aux Meadows is an 11th-century Viking settlement, the oldest known European settlement in the New World. The excavated remains of these wood-frame peat-turf buildings were discovered in 1960 by Helge and Anne Stine Ingstad, and L'Anse aux Meadows was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. The fearless sailors who navigated from Scandinavia via Greenland were led by Leif Eriksson, son of Eric the Red. Nearby the archaeological site, visitors can also explore the hiking trails that lead to intriguing bays and lakes.
About Woody Point, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador
Acclaimed for its unearthly landscape, Woody Point is probably as close to Mars as you will ever get in this lifetime. Situated on the west coast of the island, the Tablelands behind Woody Point in the Gros Morne National Park are composed of peridotite — like much of the surface of Mars — and NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, plus others are studying this unique land form searching for insights into possible bacterial life on the red planet. The story of the Tablelands earned Gros Morne its World Heritage Site status from UNESCO in 2010, and the area remains a geological wonder, showcasing a time when the continents of Africa and North America collided. When the plates struck 485 million years ago, the peridotite was pushed to the surface, and remained above sea level. The rock lacks the nutrients to sustain plant life, thus giving the Tablelands a barren, isolated appearance. As the name suggests, the flat topped mountains dwarf the tiny village (population 281!), yet Woody Point has retained its character and the historic houses and buildings dating from 1870 have been beautifully maintained.
