About Singapore
At first glance, this diamond-shaped island just off the coast of Malaysia gleams with modernism and commercialism, making it seem more Western than Eastern. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay.
Singapore Attractions
Thian Hock Keng, the "Temple of Heavenly Bliss," is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore. What was originally a makeshift altar became a full-blown temple in 1841, and it still shines today with red and black lacquer and gold gilt. The shrine honors Ma Po Cho, the Patron Goddess of Sailors, but it also recognizes the Protector of Life, the God of War, the Goddess of Mercy and the Sun and Moon Gods through intricate carvings and statues.

This beautiful island off south-eastern Thailand is covered with coconut plantations and circled by (call us clichd but it's true) palm-fringed beaches. It was once an 'untouched' backpackers' mecca, but is now well on its way to becoming a fully-fledged tourist resort. Coconuts are still the mainstay of the local economy, however, and up to two million of them are shipped to Bangkok each month.
The most popular beaches are Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai: both have good swimming and snorkelling but are getting a little crowded. For more peace and quiet, try Mae Nam, Bo Phut and Big Buddha on the northern coast. The main town on the island is Na Thon.
Most of the beaches have plenty of rustic, thatched-roofed bungalows but accommodation can still be hard to secure in the high seasons between December and February and July and August. The best time to visit is during the hot and dry season between February and June. There are flights from Bangkok to the island's Don Sak Airport. Several ferry and
jetboat companies operate from Surat Thani: express boats take two and a half hours and jet boats take one and a half hours. Local transport comprises songthaews, though several places hire motorcycles.
Ko Samui's northern neighbour, Ko Pha-Ngan, is more tranquil, and has equally good beaches and fine snorkelling. Its renowned beach parties at Hat Rin are popular with backpackers, though not with the local police. The island is a half-hour boat ride from Ko Samui.
With its hulking skyscrapers and ultramodern hotels, Bangkok is one of the most contemporary cities in Asia. Thankfully, it never lost its Thai charm, with the museums, temples, food and, of course, people that make Bangkok both quintessentially Thai and culturally diverse. One great way to think about your exploration of Bangkok is to traverse the streets for a taste of the modern, but to get a feel for the historical, more old-style Bangkok, take to the canals.
Bangkok Attractions
There is so much to see in Bangkok that you can easily spend a week in this city to visit all the interesting sights in and around Bangkok.
Bangkok's temples, despite being in the center of a busy metropolis, are some of the finest in all of Asia.
The museums in Bangkok are mostly devoted to Thai art and architecture, but the National Gallery is a place to view art from other countries. Be sure to see the National Museum and the Vimanmek Teak Mansion, as well as the Shed of the Royal Barges -- a one-of-a-kind experience. The Victory Monument is in honor of Thai soldiers. The Erawan Shrine located next to the Grand Hyatt Hotel is one of the best places to see traditional religious dances.Vimarnmekh Mansion - Believed to be the world's largest building made entirely of teak wood, the mansion is three stories high. It boasts thirty-one rooms, halls and ante rooms, not counting the terraces and verandas.Jim Thompson's House - The house is a fine example of Thai architecture. It is furnished with pieces that belonged to Thompson. The American adventurer is best known for revitalizing Thailand's silk industry. His home has become a popular attraction since his puzzling disappearance in 1968.

Cambodia is best known as the occasional side trip to Angkor Wat, the famous temple in northern Cambodia, on your way to or from Thailand. But all that is changing with the revitalization of Sihanoukville, Cambodia's one and only beach resort. Located in the south, it's part resort, part backpacker hangout, part working port and all big city.
Sihanoukville Attractions
About 18 km from downtown Sihanoukville is Ream National Park, which offers both boat and safari tours of its 21,000 hectares of land and marine habitat. I know what you're saying - heck, that's a lot of hectares. But it's well worth the trip with some 155 species represented including the rare mouse deer and pangolin and the very rare freshwater white dolphin, which only comes around from December through February.
Ho Chi Minh City, also referred to as Saigon, is Vietnam's most bustling and spirited city. Breathtaking in its scope of activities, culture and excitement, Ho Chi Minh City is a modern metropolis with attractions such as museums, art galleries and botanical gardens, along with cultural sites like elegant palaces and stunning pagodas.
Ho Chi Minh City Attractions
The disturbing War Remnants Museum highlights the horrors of modern combat, and especially portrays the suffering inflicted on the Vietnamese people during the Vietnam War. Previously called the Museum of American War Crimes, the name was altered so as not to cause offence to American visitors, but its displays do tell the story from an anti-American perspective.Central Saigon - The Rex Hotel, a famous hangout for American officers during the war, has regained some of its previous glory and is once again the central hub of the city. Nearby is the impressive French-era Municipal Theater, which offers a varied program of events. Also close to the Rex is the magnificent pastel-yellow Saigon City Hall.Botanical Gardens - Located at the end of Le Duan Boulevard, the 130-year-old gardens boast a lovely collection of orchids and other flowers. The small zoo features a number of endangered indigenous animals, as well as other exotic exhibits from overseas.

Vietnam's new port of Chan May provides easy entree to Hue, the Imperial City on the banks of the Perfume River. Legacies of both the ancient Champa Kingdom and years of colonial rule are alive in the city's art and architecture, including the Forbidden Purple City and the moated Imperial Citadel.
Hạ Long Bay (literally: "Descending Dragon Bay"; Vietnamese: Vịnh Hạ Long;下龍灣) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a popular travel destination, located in Quảng Ninh province, Vietnam. Administratively, the bay belongs to Hạ Long City, Cẩm Phả town, and part of Van Don district. The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. Hạ Long Bay is a center of a larger zone which includes Bái Tử Long bay to the northeast, and Cát Bà islands to the southwest. These larger zones share similar geological, geographical, geomorphological, climate, and cultural characters.
Hạ Long Bay has an area of around 1,553 km2, including 1,960 islets, most of which are limestone. The core of the bay has an area of 334 km2 with a high density of 775 islets. The limestone in this bay has gone through 500 million years of formation in different conditions and environments. The evolution of the karst in this bay has taken 20 million years under the impact of the tropical wet climate. The geo-diversity of the environment in the area has created biodiversity, including a tropical evergreen biosystem, oceanic and sea shore biosystem. Hạ Long Bay is home to 14 endemic floral species and 60 endemic faunal species.
Historical research surveys have shown the presence of prehistorical human beings in this area tens of thousands years ago. The successive ancient cultures are the Soi Nhụ culture around 18,000-7000 BC, the Cái Bèo culture 7000-5000 BC and the Hạ Long culture 5,000-3,500 years ago. Hạ Long Bay also marked important events in the history of Vietnam with many artifacts found in Bài Thơ Mout, Đầu Gỗ Cave, Bãi Cháy.
500 years ago, Nguyen Trai praised the beauty of Hạ Long Bay in his verse Lộ nhập Vân Đồn, in which he called it "rock wonder in the sky". In 1962, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam listed Hạ Long Bay in the National Relics and Landscapes publication. In 1994, the core zone of Hạ Long Bay was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site according to criterion vii, and listed for a second time according to criterion viii.

The most striking thing about Hong Kong is its pervasive mix of old and new. With ramshackle apartment buildings flanked by uber-modern high-rises, a rickety street-level tram clanking by above a state-of-the-art subway system, and wheelbarrows being pushed through the streets alongside Rolls-Royces, Hong Kong is a study in contrasts that constantly surprises. Add the former British colony's strange brew of Asian and Western cultures to this endless series of odd contradictions and one thing's for certain: this is a place you'll never get tired of exploring.
Hong Kong (Victoria Harbor) Attractions
