A cruising destination for nearly 100 years, Geirangerfjord offers one of Norways most breathtaking combinations of massive mountains, towering waterfalls and scenic waterways. In Geiranger, farmers work along narrow mountain ledges, oblivious to the heights.
Geiranger Activities
Blomberg, a deserted fjord-farm in beautiful surroundings
Brudesløret, a waterfall, The Bride's Veil, in the Geiranger Fjord
Dalsnibba is a Viewpoint 1,500 metres above seal level that offers incredible views of the Geiranger Fjord and surrounding scenery
Geiranger Geological Park is a unique park with waterfalls and scenic beauty
The Octagonal Geiranger Church is located in beautiful surroundings with views across the fjord
A visit to Runde, Southern Norway's largest bird sanctuary mountain with around half a million sea birds will provide you with a life-long memory and some incredible sights
Driving eastwards from Geiranger, you come to the beautiful "spacious villages" such as Lom and Skjåk, with a culture and scenery completely different from the rest of Western Norway
Norways northern-most settlement is the picturesque fishing village of Honningsvag. Cross the empty expanse of Arctic tundra to the North Cape. There you will stand atop a a 1,000-foot sheer granite cliff at the literal European end of the earth.
Honningsvag Attractions
Almost all visitors to this area come specifically to visit the North Cape. While in Honningsvag, you might enjoy the Nordkapphuset, where the museum features interesting displays depicting the local history and culture.
Shetland Islands, archipelago, 552 sq mi (1,427 sq km), off N Scotland. They consist of c.100 islands c.70 mi (110 km) long, about a fourth of which are inhabited. The largest are Mainland (where Lerwick, the main town, is located), Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsey, and Bressay. Oil, produced offshore in the North Sea since the 1970s, supplements income
from traditional sheep, cattle, and knitware industries. Tourism is also important. The hardy Shetland pony and the Shetland sheepdog originated there. Occupied by Norsemen by the 9th cent., the islands were annexed to Scotland in 1472. Fishing is plentiful here, and the rocky cliffs offset by vast colonies of gannets and gulls make for breathtaking scenery.
Just 10 miles off the coast of Northern Scotland is Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, an area rich in wildlife and archaeological sites. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850, and the site reveals that Orkneys were inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Attractions
The islands are virtually a museum of prehistoric times. Rock circles, cairns, standing stones, ancient tombs and prehistoric villages are scattered about, gaining these islands international recognition. The Orkneys are also a paradise for bird watchers, with a myriad of puffins, eider ducks, whooper swans and arctic terns. These birds, as well as many other species, nest here during the summer months.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Activities
St. Magnus Cathedral - The massive, Norman-style cathedral was dedicated by its founder, Earl Rognvald, to his murdered kinsman, Earl Magnus, in the 12th century.
Bishop's Palace - Only the walls and the tower of this 12th-century residence, built for Bishop William of Old, still stand. A narrow, spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, affording a great view of the cathedral and across Kirkwall's rooftops.
Earl's Palace - Better preserved than the Bishop's Palace, the neighboring Earl's Palace dates to 1600. Its style blends medieval fierceness with the ornate elements of French Renaissance architecture. It features dank dungeons, massive fireplaces and a magnificent central hall. Excellent exhibits explain the use of the various rooms; they provide insight into the life of the earl and the manner in which he conducted his ruthless business.
Highland Park - A good mile south of town is this "most northerly legal distillery in Scotland." In operation for 200 years, it closed only once, during World War II when it was used as a military store.
Greenwich (pronounced 'grenn-itch') is a town, now part of the south eastern urban sprawl of London, on the south bank of the River Thames in the London Borough of Greenwich.
Greenwich (London) Activities
Greenwich Royal Observatory - Home of Zero Longitude, World Time and where the millennium officially begins for the world.
National Maritime Museum - One of the world's great maritime museum currently undergoing a major make-over for the millennium
Queen's House - Built for an English Queen and used as a model for the White House In Washington DC. A truly magnificent building.
Cutty Sark - An impressive site in dry dock besides the River Thames. Climb aboard to see what life was like sailing the high seas under sail.
Gypsy Moth IV - A small craft besides the Cutty Sark where Sir Chichester sailed single-handed around the world breaking many records along the way.
Royal Naval College - Greenwich Hospital a legacy of Queen Mary and one of Sir Christopher Wren's masterpieces. The Navy has left and the buildings are being transformed.
Greenwich Royal Park - Tranquil home to flowers and animals. Great views across Greenwich and to the centre of London. The home of the Greenwich Royal Observatory.
Ranger's House - On the edge of Greenwich Park and now owned by English Heritage.
