The Westman Islands are a group of 15-18 islands, depending on how they are classed, and about 30 skerries sand rock pillars, located off the mainland's south coast. The islands were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions along a 30-km long fissure lying southwest to northeast. The largest island is Heimaey, 13.4 km2. safjrdur in Iceland has been a trading centre since 1569 and the regional capital of the West Fjords. The oldest part of the town rests on a sandbank that juts out into the fjord. It has been the site of a church for centuries and was called "Eyri" by locals, the parish being called Eyrarhreppur.
The village Grundarfjordur is situated on an exceptionally beautiful bay. The bay is nearly encircled by impressive and graceful mountains, which offer spectacular variations. French fishermen were granted a base in Grundarfjordur from 1800-1860 and they built a hospital and a church there during that period. Fishing and fish processing is the main occupation, commerce is important, and the tourist trade increases steadily and the village offers accommodations and caters to most of the tourists' needs. Whale watching cruises and deep sea angling are popular and good trout fishing is in nearby lakes. Grundarfjordur was a trading post throughout the centuries and ruins of the old trading houses can still been seen.
Grundarfjordur Attractions
Nature, community life, and the area's history have attracted many tourists from both Iceland and abroad to Grundarfjordur. The opportunity to enjoy natural beauty in such peaceful surroundings is considered a privilege by those who normally have to cope with the noise and bustle of city life. People who enjoy the beauty of the fjord and take an active part in the life of the community welcome the absolute relaxation that this peaceful district offers. The town is probably the only one in the world where the building authorities have provided allotments for the "hidden people" or elves. Grundarfjordur residents hold their annual summer festival, "Good Times in Grundarfjordur," on the last weekend in July.
