But just a short distance outside the clamor of the city is a whole different world. In the surrounding small towns and villages you'll get a glimpse into Japan's rich culture and traditions. Here you'll discover scores of wooden residential homes, ancient temples, shrines and imperial gardens. From the frenzy-filled metropolis to the tranquil bonsai-tree-lined neighborhoods, Tokyo is truly a study in delightful contrasts. Tokyo Attractions Tokyo has so many incredible things for a visitor to see and do there just isn't time to do it all. But if you want to experience the true heart and soul of Tokyo, a visit to Kokyo, Japan's Imperial Palace, is a must. This magnificent, awe-inspiring edifice is an architectural marvel and home to the Emperor of Japan. Another cultural and architectural landmark not to be missed is the Sensoji Temple. Built in the 7th century, this is Tokyo's oldest and most significant Buddhist temple. This site is very popular with tourists, so plan to visit early. 3	Sunday, 4/2/28	About Kagoshima Tucked into the protrctive arms of a large sea inlet, Kagoshima is on the southern flak of Kyushu Island. The city has long enjoyed a pleasant climate and productive crops due to a warm marine influence. And her towering Sakurajima volcano causes to compare Kagoshima geographically to the Italian city of Naples. Kagoshima Attractions Visit the exquisite Iso-Teien Garden and its villa, built in 1660, and enjoy its gorgeous views before a short ferry ride to smoking Sakurajima for a closeup view of the volcano and its lava fields. Or journey into the countryside to Chiran and its wellpreserved streets lined with samurai homes. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of Lake Ikeda and the stunning vistas of the Satsuma Peninsula. 5	Tuesday, 4/4/28	About Ishigaki Ishigaki Island is the main island of the Yaeyama Islands and the region's transportation hub. Ishigaki City, the Yaeyama's only and Japan's southernmost city, is the site of the region's major airport and boat terminal. Ishigaki offers several nice beaches and fantastic snorkeling and diving in the surrounding coral reefs. Ishigaki's rivers, while not quite as wild as those of nearby Iriomote, also offer a jungle like scenery and are nice to explore by canoe. Various hiking opportunities exist in the island's hilly interior. Ishigaki Attractions Ishigaki Island is most famous for its Kabira Bay, a stunning bay of emerald green waters.which you can explore on a glass boat. But behold, you are not allowed to swim, because the water is full of poisonous snakes. Among numerous more great spots is the northern most tip of the island. Ishigaki Activities The transparent waters around the island are full of coral reefs, making scuba diving the number one activity on Ishigaki. 6	Wednesday, 4/5/28	About Taipei Taipei is a city of opposites. There are ancient temples and neon-laden clubs. The world's tallest building and tiniest markets. The bustle of millions of people and the peace of botanical gardens. And if you are a gourmet, Taipei offers the greatest variety of Chinese food in the world. This capital of the Republic of China and Taiwan's largest city is one destination that will leave you feeling a more fulfilled person. Taipei Attractions Taipei 101 is currently the tallest building in the world with 101 above-ground stories. (But be sure to say "I saw it when," as it will only carry this distinction until the completion of the Burj Dubai in 2008.) It was built to withstand earthquakes above a seven on the Richter scale and is considered by many to be the world's most technologically advanced skyscraper. Make sure you visit the world's highest outdoor observatory, which you can access by taking one of two elevators that will get you from the main floor to the 89th floor in under 39 seconds. Add the former British colony's strange brew of Asian and Western cultures to this endless series of odd contradictions and one thing's for certain: this is a place you'll never get tired of exploring. Hong Kong (Victoria Harbor) Attractions High above Hong Kong Island on the 'back of the Dragon', Victoria Peak is Hong Kong's premier visitor attraction, providing magnificent harbour and city views. Arriving late afternoon enables you to experience the dazzling panorama of Hong Kong Island, the harbour, Kowloon and the hills beyond. Later, you can thrill to the neon-dotted skyline by night. What's more, The Peak offers visitors a multitude of fantastic entertainment, dining and shopping options. On the Come Horseracing Tour you'll quickly learn that horseracing is not just a sport in Hong Kong. It's a passion. It's followed by millions of people. 13	Wednesday, 4/12/28	About Koh Samui This beautiful island off south-eastern Thailand is covered with coconut plantations and circled by (call us clichd but it's true) palm-fringed beaches. It was once an 'untouched' backpackers' mecca, but is now well on its way to becoming a fully-fledged tourist resort. Coconuts are still the mainstay of the local economy, however, and up to two million of them are shipped to Bangkok each month. The most popular beaches are Hat Chaweng and Hat Lamai: both have good swimming and snorkelling but are getting a little crowded. For more peace and quiet, try Mae Nam, Bo Phut and Big Buddha on the northern coast. The main town on the island is Na Thon. Most of the beaches have plenty of rustic, thatched-roofed bungalows but accommodation can still be hard to secure in the high seasons between December and February and July and August. The best time to visit is during the hot and dry season between February and June. There are flights from Bangkok to the island's Don Sak Airport. Several ferry and jetboat companies operate from Surat Thani: express boats take two and a half hours and jet boats take one and a half hours. Local transport comprises songthaews, though several places hire motorcycles. Ko Samui's northern neighbour, Ko Pha-Ngan, is more tranquil, and has equally good beaches and fine snorkelling. But as you continue to discover the city-state, you'll uncover the eclectic mix of cultures, religions, ancient treasures and British colonial impressions that give rise to a unique Singaporean identity. The cultural fusion is perhaps best expressed in Singapore's unofficial language, Singlish, a unique patois of English, Chinese and Malay. Singapore Attractions Thian Hock Keng, the "Temple of Heavenly Bliss," is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore. What was originally a makeshift altar became a full-blown temple in 1841, and it still shines today with red and black lacquer and gold gilt. The shrine honors Ma Po Cho, the Patron Goddess of Sailors, but it also recognizes the Protector of Life, the God of War, the Goddess of Mercy and the Sun and Moon Gods through intricate carvings and statues.
