Caleta Tortel is a small town of 350 inhabitants that was declared a Typical Zone in 2001. The Caleta Tortel is the capital of the commune of Tortel of less than 500 inhabitants, where 80% of its surface corresponds to Protected Wild Areas. The town of Caleta Tortel is located in the delta of the Baker River, the largest of Chile, in an estuary of fjords and channels, between the North and South Ice Field.
Between 1904 and 1908, the overexploitation of the Baker Company operated in Low Canoe, an area very close to Caleta Tortel and the Island of the Dead, causing the Cove Tortel to be occupied for lumber camping for the overexploitation of the cypress tree.
Gradually, in Caleta Tortel, using wood of Guaitecas cypress, they gradually constructed, an ingenious network of footbridges, stairs and bridges that go over rocks, vegetation and marshes, connecting the piers with the houses distributed in different areas of large rocks in Caleta Tortel.
Located in Bernardo O´Higgins National Park, Pio XI Glacier is anotther must-see place in the region. Pio XI is as big as Santiago, with a surface of 1265 squared kilometers, which grows 50 meters in height, length and density every day. This is a unique quality, all the other glaciers in Patagonia and in most areas of the world are losing extension, whereas Pio XI keeps growing everyday. Pio XI Glacier, the biggest one in South America, offers a unique view of the landscape.
The west side of the Sarmiento Canal is flanked by Madre de Dios Island, with towering limestone peaks. Amalia Glacier is blue and white, and home to penguins and seabirds.
This park is a protected area that was created on January 22, 1965 on land that was formerly part of the "Hollanda" forest reserve and "Hernando de Magallanes National Park". It covers 3,607,739 acres and includes the Cordillera Darwin mountain range, which is the final land-based stretch of the Andes before it becomes a chain of mountains appearing as small islands that sink into the Pacific Ocean and the Beagle Channel. Several tidewater glaciers and steep fjords can be found in the park. It also comprises the Gordon, Cook and Londonderry islands, as well as part of Hoste Island (excluding the Hardy Peninsula and other portions).
A Chilean naval base on Navarino Island. Navarino is home to virgin forests, snow covered mountains, massive glaciers and rich bird life. The island is unspoiled and offers exceptional hiking opportunities.
The southernmost town in the world, Ushuaia sits at the edge of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina´s "land of fire," so named because of the fires lit by Indians to warn of the arrival of Magellan´s ship. Surrounded by a countryside of snowcapped mountains, dense forest, rivers and waterfalls, the town has a rugged, frontier spirit. Nearby Tierran del Fuego National Park is a wildlife sanctuary.
Ushuaia Attractions
Savor the spectacular beauty of Tierra del Fuego’s lakes, lush forests, flora and fauna and soaring mountains by train, 4-wheel drive, on horseback, or on an off-road forest trek. Enjoy the expansive views from Garibaldi Pass and watch for sea lions and albatross along the Beagle Channel.
