About Savona
A part of the Italian Riviera near Genoa, Savona is a city rich in history and enterprise, largely centered around its port. A tour of the city may include a visit to "Columbus's House," a former residence of Christopher Columbus nestled in the Savona hills. Or one may visit Savona's most important monument, the Priamar, a recently-restored castle stronghold located near the port.

Near the Rocca di San Giorgio, on the "Promontorio del Priamar", stands the fortress named Priamar, built after fall of Savona in Genoese hands (1528) by the Genoese in 1542, on the area of the old cathedral and old city and later used as a prison and military prison (italian patriot Giuseppe Mazzini was imprisoned here).
Near the Cathedral (built 1589 – 1604) is the Cappella Sistina, containing the tomb erected by the Della Rovere Pope Sixtus IV to honor his parents. The Cathedral has one of the most notworthy wooden choirs of XVI cent. European churches.
Facing the cathedral is the unfinished Palazzo Della Rovere, built by Cardinal Giulio della Rovere (Pope Julius II) from the plans of Giuliano da Sangallo as a university.
The old towers, survived after 1528 ruin (war with Genoa): the Campanassa (Commune tower where freedom of Savona was signed in 1191), towers Corsi and Riario, "Ghibelline Tower", and Torre della Quarda (also known as "a Torretta"), in Leone Pancaldo square.

Due to a massive volcanic eruption in 1730 that lasted for six years, one third of the island was covered by a sea of lava. In 1824, a new volcano thrust out of the earth's crust and once again molten lava poured over a good part of Lanzarote, leaving a lunar landscape of more than a hundred craters, lava fields, and layers of cinders and pebbles. Dromedaries found here add to this bizarre scenery. Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote, is situated on the island's eastern coast. Blackened lava and yellow sands provide a dramatic backdrop. Home to the archipelago's largest fishing fleet, the harbor is packed with boats. While Arrecife itself has little to offer beyond a modern art museum, it provides an excellent starting point for exploration into the fascinating interior. Especially a trip to the Fire Mountains should not be missed.

It is impossible to mention Lanzarote without mentioning at the same time the island’s most famous son, Cesar Manrique. As an artist and architect, he sought to construct buildings as extended natural forms. He began to paint abstract canvases, which made their way to the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Some of his masterworks on Lanzarote include the Cactus Garden and Los Jameos del Agua, where within the grotto’s lava formations Manrique incorporated a concert cave, a restaurant and a bar. His home, donated to the people of Lanzarote, is now known as the Fundacion Cesar Manrique. The living room has been transformed into a gallery displaying a private collection of his works.

Guanapay Castle - The remains of this castle, built in the 16th century, stand on the edge of a volcano. From the summit, there is a vast panorama including Teguise, Lanzarote's former capital, and Graciosa Island on the northern horizon.

Cathedral de Santa Ana - This 16th-century Gothic cathedral is the city's main place of worship. Sculptor Jose Lujan Perez designed the neo-classical façade. The cathedral features a majestic dome towering above the crypt. Nearby is the Museo Diocesano with more works by Perez.
Ciudad Jardin - This relic from the late 19th century features a mixture of homes surrounded by beautiful gardens. Doramas Park, named after one of the Guanche kings, is particularly well landscaped.

Sé Cathedral - The cathedral was constructed by the Knights of the Order of Christ in 15th-century Manueline style. The stunning design features white stucco with contrasting black basalt and red tufa rock; the ceiling is inlaid with ivory.
Museum of Sacred Art - Located near the Town Hall, the museum contains art from the island, including a group of 15th- and 16th-century paintings of Portuguese and Flemish schools. The museum is closed from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Botanical Garden - The gardens are Madeira’s best example of lavishly landscaped grounds. Situated on the estate of a former private residence, the gardens are host to a profusion of plants and flowers from all parts of the world, which thrive in the island’s temperate climate.
Catch the flavor of Casablanca in the open spice markets and herb alist shops on the Quarter Balilida in New Medina.
