About Copenhagen
The center of Danish commerce and government, Copenhagen is one of Europes best-loved capitals. Visit the Little Mermaid statue and enjoy Tivoli Gardens, the 150-year-old amusement park. You can see the Danish crown jewels at Rosenborg Palace.
Copenhagen Attractions
Take a stroll down Langelinie Promenade to see the heart of Copenhagen. It runs along the water from the port, skirting the 300-year-old, moated citadel near the celebrated statue of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid. The surrounding park is home to the Gefion Fountain, Copenhagen's most spectacular fountain.
Copenhagen Activities
Visit two of Copenhagen's most famous castles - the Rosenborg, home to the Danish crown jewels, and the Christianborg, the residence of the Royal Family since 1749.
See the symbol of Copenhagen, the famous bronze sculpture of the Little Mermaid.
Visit the Canals of Gammel Strand and the water fountain of Gefion.
Pay your respects at the Resistance Museum, featuring relics of the Resistance Movement during the German occupation of World War II.
As soon as you arrive in Skagen you squint: everything is yellow the houses, the railway station, the church, the shops and all of it bathed in a sunlight which seems to gain extra brightness by being reflected off two separate seas and a desert-like belt of sand dunes nearby. The distinctive colour of the town's buildings, stemming from the cheapest form of housepaint available, is a shade known throughout Denmark as 'Skagen Yellow'.
Skagen Attractions
The headland at Grenen, the northernmost point of Denmark, is a spectacular setting where the two parts of the Baltic Sea, the Kattegat and the Skagerrak meet. This makes for turbulent seas and strandings - beachings and shipwreckings are not uncommon. The frequent shipping losses and the strategic location as the gateway to the Baltic led to Skagen being the site of one of Denmark's earliest lighthouses, the Vippefyr, constructed in the 15th century. A reconstruction of the lighthouse is located to the north of the town of Skagen.
The largest and most important port in southeast Norway. A popular shopping area. Kristiansand, city and seaport in southern Norway, on the Skagerrak Strait. It is the seat of Vest-Agder County. Fish products, paper, pulp, and timber are shipped from here, and tourism is important. Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by Christian IV, king of Denmark and Norway. The city became an Episcopal see in 1682. Population (1993 estimate) 67,113.
Located between Stavanger and Bergen in the mountainous Hordaland region is Hardangerfjord which, 183 km long and with a maximum depth of 830 m, is one of Norway's most beautiful fjords, noted for its spectacular scenery and majestic nature. At the entrance to Hardangerfjord, on the southern shore, is the little village of Rosendal (part of the municipality of Kvinnherad) where the Norwegian landscape is at its most characteristic: deep and narrow fjords, foaming waterfalls, and the Folgefonna, the third largest glacier in Norway.
Eidfjord is a scenic delight. The village of Eidsdal here has served as the junction of eastern and western Norway for countless centuries. Take the thrilling bus ride along the banks of the Eie River before climbing into the stupendous Mabodal Canyon. At the very summit, you'll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the thundering Voringfoss Waterfall.
Eidfjord Activities
Experience wild, beautiful and dramatic west Norwegian nature on a journey with the “Troll Train” on the old Rv 7 road in Måbødalen. The “train” can accommodate 50 passengers. The train departs on the hour every hour from Vøringfoss Cafeteria and every 30 minutes past the hour from the farm at Måbø. Måbø lies around 12 kilometres from the centre of Eidfjord next to the Rv 7 road. Vøringfoss Cafeteria lies at the top of Måbødalen by the Rv 7, around 20 kilometres from the centre of Eidfjord. Eidfjord kommune has built an excellent gallery, adjacent to Quality Hotel & Resort Vøringfoss, for the unique work of the painter Nils Bergslien. In addition, the gallery has room for other art exhibitions. Free entry. Gallery Nils Bergslien is located in the centre of Eidfjord. For details of exhibitions and opening times, contact Eidfjord tourist information centre or Eidfjord kommune. The Hardangervidda Nature Centre Eidfjord is one of the most modern nature and cultural-historical experience centres in Norway. The displays are arranged on three floors and inform the visitor about the geology, glaciology, botany, ornithology, zoology and archaeology of the area via interactive displays. Non-traditional aquarium. With Ivo Caprino’s Supervideograph film “Mountain, fjord and waterfall”, you get an unforgettable film experience. Hardangervidda Nature Centre is an activity and experience centre for the whole family. A visit to the Nature Centre is an experience out of the ordinary Western Norway’s largest burial mounds from the Iron Age and Viking periods with 350 graves from AD400-1000. Part of a fascinating cultural landscape. The burial mounds are located on the Hæreid plateau, around 20 minutes walk from the centre of Eidfjord. Access also by car.
Maloy is located on the south-eastern side of the island of Vagsoy, which the municipality is named after, and is connected to the mainland by the bridge Maloybrua. It is one of the most important fishing ports in the region. In 1997, Maloy was allowed by the municipality to call itself a town.
Shetland Islands, archipelago, 552 sq mi (1,427 sq km), off N Scotland. They consist of c.100 islands c.70 mi (110 km) long, about a fourth of which are inhabited. The largest are Mainland (where Lerwick, the main town, is located), Yell, Unst, Fetlar, Whalsey, and Bressay. Oil, produced offshore in the North Sea since the 1970s, supplements income
from traditional sheep, cattle, and knitware industries. Tourism is also important. The hardy Shetland pony and the Shetland sheepdog originated there. Occupied by Norsemen by the 9th cent., the islands were annexed to Scotland in 1472. Fishing is plentiful here, and the rocky cliffs offset by vast colonies of gannets and gulls make for breathtaking scenery.
Akureyri were the sandbanks that projected into the harbour; in earlier times there were no fewer than five of those. Four have now disappeared, however, owing to the diligence of the Akureyri people in reclaiming land from the sea. The northernmost one, Oddeyri Point, is still in place, though, and a clear landmark in the town. It was in the inner harbour, in the safe shelter of Oddeyri Point, that the merchants of earlier times preferred have their ships lie at anchor. And the harbour depth allowed the largest vessels to anchor in close proximity to the shoreline so that a fully laden rowing boat would reach land within a few minutes.
Akureyri Activities
Laxadulshus, the town's oldest residence dates from 1795 and houses a fascinating display on the town's history and a pleasant cafe
The many churches are a source of interest. Logmannshlio church more than rewards the climb, while Akureyrarkirkja boasts a splendid 3200-pipe organ
The locals are proud of the botanic gardens and you'll be amazed at the variety of flowers that are nurtured in these northern climes
Kjarnaskogur, within an hour of the town, is Iceland's most visited forest. Enjoy its extensive leisure facilities, its breathtaking walks and fantastic ski slopes. The town also boasts the world's most northerly golf course and hosts the annual Arctic Open
It has more than its share of museums, including a Natural History Museum, a folk museum, and museums set in the homes of native poet Matthias Jochumsson and children's book author Jon Sveinson
safjrdur in Iceland has been a trading centre since 1569 and the regional capital of the West Fjords. The oldest part of the town rests on a sandbank that juts out into the fjord. It has been the site of a church for centuries and was called "Eyri" by locals, the parish being called Eyrarhreppur.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.
Reykjavik Attractions
A trip to Reykjavík would not be complete without a trip to the pools, which are open all year round. The best time of the day to go is definitely in the early morning (between 7 and 8 o'clock), when people gather before going to work to discuss current events. There's no better way to check the pulse of the city and to hear some gossip while you're at it.
Reykjavik Activities
For an exciting sea adventure, visitors to Reykjavík are encouraged to try one of the many whale watching tours that operate along the harbour The Blue Lagoon is probably the most recognizable feature of what Iceland has to offer visitors. This beautiful resort is located midway between the Leif Eriksson International Airport and the city of Reykjavik The Culture House contains various exhibitions that cast light on Iceland's history and cultural heritage The Viking Village consists of Fjorukrain and Hotel Viking The Reykjavik Park and Zoo is home to various animals living in Iceland, both domestic and wild. This is the place for children to get to know the animals and experince them like they don't usually get to in the large cities or zoos The Thermal beach is an old dream come true for many of those familiar with the magic of Nauthólsvík
