About Seward
Seward, a common port for many Alaskan cruise itineraries to embark and disembark, is not only one of Alaska’s oldest and most scenic communities. Seward’s downtown district is filled with quaint shops and art galleries and some of the most exciting outdoor adventures imaginable are right around the corner.
Seward Activities
CruisitudeTM Tip: Don’t miss the Alaska Sealife Center. This facility features beautiful local marine life in its natural habitat as well as views of the bay. Visitors can learn about the complex Alaskan ecosystem while enjoying the antics of sea lions, otters and porpoises.
• Spot seals, sea otters, puffins and whales from a Resurrection Bay wildlife cruise • Get up close to a glacier with a visit Kenai Fjords National Park. Once inside the park the Exit Glacier can be reached by foot
Many cruise ships sail through College Fjord, an inlet enclosed by more than ten glaciers. From the cruise ship, passengers will see where the glaciers meet the sea and maybe even spot sea lions resting on the ice floating in the water. Choosing a balcony stateroom will allow you to take in these breathtaking sights from the comfort of your own room.
College Fjord Activities
CruisitudeTM Tip: Explorers to College Fjord were financed by a group of Ivy League colleges who named many of the glaciers after prestigious schools.
This historic town is set on a peninsula along the deep blue waters of the Lynn Canal. In town, visit the Chilkat Center to experience Tlingit Indian heritage preserved through art and dance and the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve to spot Alaska’s most famous feathered resident.
Haines Activities
From a helicopter, take in the spectacular views of glaciers before landing on the Denver Glacier for a dogsled ride.
Anglers can enjoy the entire spectrum of sport fishing in the Haines area, with saltwater fishing for salmon and halibut and freshwater fishing for Dolly Varden trout, cutthroat trout and arctic grayling.
Visit the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center centrally located downtown for picturesque views of the Lynn Canal, a magnificent fjord.
Nestled between 3,000-foot high sheer granite cliffs, the narrow, twisting slice of ocean called Tracy Arm Fjord weaves through the Tongass National Forest for roughly 35 miles. The shoreline is spotted with waterfalls created by melting snowcaps and trees sprouting at odd angles from rocky outcroppings. Travelers cruising through Tracy Arm should take time to admire the landscape and keep an eye out of animals.
Sail past mammoth cliffs that rise out of the water and be awed by the sheer scenic beauty. Those who visit Misty Fjords feel closer than ever before to the untouched serenity of the natural world as they are surrounded by blue glacial lakes, tall waterfalls, and snowcapped peaks. Keep a watchful eye out for bald eagles soaring overhead, black and brown bears foraging along the shore, Dall porpoises riding the bow wave of the ship and harbor seals sunning themselves along the rocky ledges.
Just 40 mi (66 km) south of the Alaskan border, Prince Rupert is the largest community on British Columbia's north coast. Set on Kaien Island at the mouth of the Skeena River and surrounded by deep green fjords and coastal rain forest, Prince Rupert is rich in the culture of the Tsimshian, people who have been in the area for thousands of years. As the western terminus of Canada's second transcontinental railroad and blessed with a deep natural harbor, Prince Rupert was, at the time of its incorporation in 1910, poised to rival Vancouver as a center for trans-Pacific trade. This didn't happen, partly because the main visionary behind the scheme, Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad president Charles Hays, went down with the Titanic on his way back from a financing trip to England. Prince Rupert turned instead to fishing and forestry. A port of call for both BC and Alaska ferries, but relatively new to cruise ships, this community of 15,000 retains a laid-back, small-town air.
Alert Bay is a village on Cormorant Island, in the Regional District of Mount Waddington, British Columbia, Canada. 1,200-1,500 people live within the village.
Most of Canada's imports from and exports to the Orient and Australia pass through Vancouver, Canada's gateway to the Pacific. From the harbor entrance, spot the Lion's Gate, made up of twin mountain peaks closely resembling crouching lions. Visitors enjoy discovering this cosmopolitan city, from the shops of Robson Street to historic Gastown.
