About Hamburg
This graceful city, located at the mouth of the Elbe on the North Sea, is one of Europes busiest ports. Enjoy its stunning architecture, museums, and theaters. Discover the shopping arcades and outdoor cafes of the Inner Alster. Or stroll through the lavish parks and gardens of the Outer Alster.
Hamburg Attractions
Visit the Rathaus; the 14th-century houses of Deichstrasse; and St. Petri, Hamburgs oldest church.
Hamburg Activities
In Max Liebermann's Garden you'll find Liebermann's later work - Paintings, pastels and drawings from his summer residence at Berlin's Wannsee lake.
Miniature Wonderland is one of the biggest mock-up railways of the world! Experience a great landscape with houses and figures, cars and trees, hills and valleys, night and day and, of course, lots and lots of tracks and trains.
The Russian spy submarine U-434 is open to the public! The relic of the Cold War is shown in Hamburg's HafenCity and it is the biggest non-nuclear submarine of the world.
Within the walls of the Hamburg Dungeon lie more than 1,000 years of gruesomely authentic history vividly brought back to life... and death.
Hamburg's city centre offers more than just shopping; the streets are peppered with historical shop, trading and office buildings and you can also marvel at the imposing town hall.
The five main churches of the Hanseatic city form Hamburg's skyline. One of them is the famous Michel-St. Michaelis, a Hamburg landmark.
Founded by Dutch fishermen in the 17th century, Lerwick today is a busy town and administrative center. Handsome stone buildings—known as lodberries—line the harbor; they provided loading bays for goods, some of them illegal. The town's twisting flagstone lanes and harbor once heaved with activity, and Lerwick is still an active port today. This is also where most visitors to Shetland dock, spilling out of cruise ships, allowing passengers to walk around the town.
Thorshavn is the capital of this 20-island archepelago. Enjoy the mild climate of this rugged island, and marvel at the wild sea birds of almost every species which inhabit the majestic cliffs.
Thorshavn Attractions
Many of the attractions are found outside of Torshavn in the rugged beauty of Streymoy. There are fields with grazing ponies and sheep, tiny hamlets where residents live in half-timbered houses topped by green grass roofs, and dramatic rock formations. Birds by the thousands populate the craggy seaside cliffs, which make an ideal stopover for migratory gannets, auks and puffins. The Faroes' climate is generally wet and windy. Because of the Gulf Stream, the temperature is a good deal more moderate than the latitude might imply; it also helps to keep Faroe harbors ice-free year-round.
Please Note: The weather in the Faroes is unpredictable and can change several times in one day. A sweater or jacket and a light raincoat are recommended when going ashore. Be aware that your enjoyment of shore activities is very much subject to weather conditions.
Thorshavn Activities
Vesturkirkjan - The West Church is most likely the first building any visitor sailing into Torshavn will see. Built in 1975, its design is somewhat reminiscent of a Faroese sloop.Tinganes - This is the site where the first Norwegian settlers established their parliament, the “Thing” where Christianity was introduced in the year 999 AD.The oldest houses of the town are found in this area; many buildings dating from the 17th century are still intact and inhabited.Kongaminnid - This obelisk stands in the middle of Torshavn on a hill; it was erected in commemoration of the first visit by a Danish king to the islands in 1874.Vaglid - A pedestrian street leads to one of the shopping areas from this town square, the hub of Torshavn.Havnar Skansi - This fort was originally built by Magnus Heinason in 1580; it was rebuilt and enlarged later. At the time it was the strongest fortification in Northern Europe. During World War II, the Faroes were occupied by British Forces, who made Skansi their headquarters.
Grimsey island - far away in the north: the home of one hundred people - and one million seabirds. The island stands alone far out on the horizon, a blue cliff, surrounded by the wide Arctic Ocean, about 40 km off the north coast of Iceland; it is about 5 square kilometers in area.
Akureyri were the sandbanks that projected into the harbour; in earlier times there were no fewer than five of those. Four have now disappeared, however, owing to the diligence of the Akureyri people in reclaiming land from the sea. The northernmost one, Oddeyri Point, is still in place, though, and a clear landmark in the town. It was in the inner harbour, in the safe shelter of Oddeyri Point, that the merchants of earlier times preferred have their ships lie at anchor. And the harbour depth allowed the largest vessels to anchor in close proximity to the shoreline so that a fully laden rowing boat would reach land within a few minutes.
Akureyri Activities
Laxadulshus, the town's oldest residence dates from 1795 and houses a fascinating display on the town's history and a pleasant cafe
The many churches are a source of interest. Logmannshlio church more than rewards the climb, while Akureyrarkirkja boasts a splendid 3200-pipe organ
The locals are proud of the botanic gardens and you'll be amazed at the variety of flowers that are nurtured in these northern climes
Kjarnaskogur, within an hour of the town, is Iceland's most visited forest. Enjoy its extensive leisure facilities, its breathtaking walks and fantastic ski slopes. The town also boasts the world's most northerly golf course and hosts the annual Arctic Open
It has more than its share of museums, including a Natural History Museum, a folk museum, and museums set in the homes of native poet Matthias Jochumsson and children's book author Jon Sveinson
Patreksfjorour is named after St Patrick, spiritual guide of the first settler Orlygur Hrappsson. It is the biggest town in the southern Westfjords with a population of 600. One of the oldest trading posts in the Westfjords, fishing has traditionally been the primary activity. Today it is the outstanding beauty of this remote area which attract visitors. Where the land meets the sea at the most westerly tip of The Westfjords is the imposing Latrabjarg Cliff. It really is a line of several cliffs, 14kms long and 440ms high, home to simply stunning birdlife.
A town and municipality situated in the western part of Iceland, in the northern part of the Snefellsnes peninsula. It is a center of services and commerce for the area. Most of the people make their living from fishing and tourism. A ferry called Baldur goes over the Breioafjorour fjord to the Westfjords. It also is the gateway to Flatey. The origin of Stykkisholmur can be traced to its natural harbor. The location became an important trading post early in Icelands history: the first trading post in Stykkisholmur is traced back to the mid-16th century, even before Denmark implemented the Danish Icelandic Trade Monopoly (1602 - 1787). From that time trading has been at the heart of the settlement's history. In 1828 Arni Thorlacius built a large house for his home and companies, the Norwegian house, which has been renovated and accommodates the local museum.
The Westman Islands are a group of 15-18 islands, depending on how they are classed, and about 30 skerries sand rock pillars, located off the mainland's south coast. The islands were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions along a 30-km long fissure lying southwest to northeast. The largest island is Heimaey, 13.4 km2. Most of the islands have steep sea cliffs, and are well vegetated. Bird hunting and egg collecting are traditional to the islanders culture.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.
Reykjavik Attractions
A trip to Reykjavík would not be complete without a trip to the pools, which are open all year round. The best time of the day to go is definitely in the early morning (between 7 and 8 o'clock), when people gather before going to work to discuss current events. There's no better way to check the pulse of the city and to hear some gossip while you're at it.
Reykjavik Activities
For an exciting sea adventure, visitors to Reykjavík are encouraged to try one of the many whale watching tours that operate along the harbour The Blue Lagoon is probably the most recognizable feature of what Iceland has to offer visitors. This beautiful resort is located midway between the Leif Eriksson International Airport and the city of Reykjavik The Culture House contains various exhibitions that cast light on Iceland's history and cultural heritage The Viking Village consists of Fjorukrain and Hotel Viking The Reykjavik Park and Zoo is home to various animals living in Iceland, both domestic and wild. This is the place for children to get to know the animals and experince them like they don't usually get to in the large cities or zoos The Thermal beach is an old dream come true for many of those familiar with the magic of Nauthólsvík
