The capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is a charming mix of old and new. This is readily apparent in a walk around the area known as the Historic Properties. Enjoy the splendor of one of the finest harbors in the world by taking a water tour of the city.

One of the city's most attractive areas is the Historic Properties Development, located along the waterfront. The charming early 19th-century wood and stone buildings here have all been fully restored. And the cobblestone streets and long boardwalks are now lined with a wonderful array of boutiques, cafés, and pubs.
Halifax Activities
Relax on a drive through the beautiful Nova Scotian countryside to the moody, weathered village of Peggy's Cove. Walk along the rocks to view the craggy coastline with its bold glacier-formed outcroppings of granite and its impressive lighthouse. Then drive through the softer South Shore area back to Halifax, and enjoy another view of the city.
Take a historical and anecdote-filled tour through the streets of Halifax. Explore the hilltop fortress and the Citadel, and stroll through the beautiful Victorian-style public gardens.
Explore the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's extensive collection, with over 2,000 permanent works.
Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, a territory of France, is a mountainous archipelago located about 15 miles (24 km) off the southern coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The main islands are St. Pierre, the smallest, and Miquelon and Langlade, which are connected by the Isthmus of Langlade. The city of St. Pierre is the territory's capital and commercial center.
Old meets new in the province's capital (metro-area population a little more than 200,000), with modern office buildings surrounded by heritage shops and colorful row houses. St. John's mixes English and Irish influences, Victorian architecture and modern convenience, and traditional music and rock and roll into a heady brew. The arts scene is lively, but overall the city moves at a relaxed pace.For centuries, Newfoundland was the largest supplier of salt cod in the world, and St. John's Harbour was the center of the trade. As early as 1627, the merchants of Water Street—then known as the Lower Path—were doing a thriving business buying fish, selling goods, and supplying alcohol to soldiers and sailors.
Narsarsuaq offers a beautiful view of the Qassiarsuk sheep farms on the other side of the fjord. The green fields and slopes explain why Erik the Red chose the name Greenland. He settled at this very spot in Qassiarsuk with his family in 985 and named the site Brattahlid. To this very day the ruins from the Norse era are clearly visible, as are the elegant reconstructions of Erik's farmstead and Thjodhildur's Church.
On the southern coast you will find Qaqortoq, the only part of Greenland that really is green and not covered with a 5,000-foot-thick sheet of ice, and learn how people survive on this immense, remote island administered by the Danes but desperate for individual recognition of its distinctive culture.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.
