About Manila
The teeming city of Manila is the center of the Philippines; 7,000 sun-drenched islands. Colorful jeepneys carry citizens up and down the boulevards past cricket fields, yacht harbors, historic forts, impressive statues, and lively neighborhood marketplaces. Not far from Manila are excellent snorkel and scuba opportunities.
Manila Attractions
Manila Cathedral - Dating from 1571, this is the sixth cathedral on this site and the only church to be rebuilt in intramuros after the war. The cathedral is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Main features are the octagonal dome and the impressive stained-glass windows.
The Coconut Palace
This former Marcos guesthouse is now open to the public. Notable is the mother-of-pearl furniture in the Visayas Room.
The National Museum
The museum collection totals more than one million items from the fields of anthropology, art, botany, geology and zoology. As the museum is in the process of being relocated, only a limited amount of the collection is on display.
Located on the eastern coast of Japan and surrounded by ocean and mountains, Miyako's focal point is Jodo-ga-hama Beach along the Rias coast. The name of the beach translates to "just like paradise," and is a tangle of inlets, wide beach and rocky formations that reach from aquamarine sea to clear blue sky. The promenade is an easy stroll that leads to Mt. Usugiyama and its stunning views.
Miyako Attractions
From Todo-ga-saki Cape, you can take in the sunrise and visit its 1902 lighthouse. The promenade follows the cape along easy trails. Nearby, on the Omoe Peninsula - you'll find a statue of a maiden playing with a sea gull. If you're feeling adventurous - continue to Mt. Gassan for unrivaled views of Miyako below. In town, explore the Marine Products Museum - the first of its kind in Asia - or tour the local fish and vegetable market, where you can sample some of the freshest sushi or sip a local sake.
Tucked into the protrctive arms of a large sea inlet, Kagoshima is on the southern flak of Kyushu Island. The city has long enjoyed a pleasant climate and productive crops due to a warm marine influence. And her towering Sakurajima volcano causes to compare Kagoshima geographically to the Italian city of Naples.
Kagoshima Attractions
Visit the exquisite Iso-Teien Garden and its villa, built in 1660, and enjoy its gorgeous views before a short ferry ride to smoking Sakurajima for a closeup view of the volcano and its lava fields. Or journey into the countryside to Chiran and its wellpreserved streets lined with samurai homes. Enjoy the beautiful landscape of Lake Ikeda and the stunning vistas of the Satsuma Peninsula.
Uwajima is a city located in Ehime, Japan. In 1595, what is now Uwajima was known as Itajima village.Uwajima is home to an unusual fertility shrine called Taga Shrine, which features a large, realistic phallus carved from a log approximately 9 feet in length, 1 foot in diameter. Next to the shrine is a graphic sex museum, filled with artifacts and paintings from around the world.A mask of Ushioni, the Cow Demon, one of the many used throughout history during the bullfighting festival. The city is renowned for its bullfighting, but they differ from the more widely-known Spanish bullfights in that there is no matador. Two bulls are brought together in a ring, and fight until one bull's knees touch the ground or flees from the ring, marking it the loser.
Set on a bay in the Inland Sea, Hiroshima was the infamous site of the first atomic bomb explosion of August, 1945. Its tragic results are reflected in the sobering photographs of Peace Park. However, perhaps the best reason to visit Hiroshima is the enchanting island of Miyajima with its famous Itsukushima Shinto shrine, considered one of Japan´s three most beautiful sights. Its famous ´torii´ stands just offshore, a tall, vermilion- colored symbol of Japan, which appears to float during high tide.
Hiroshima Attractions
Visit the skeletal A-Bomb Dome, the Memorial Peace Park and Museum and the statue to the children who died. Stroll through beautifully landscaped Hiroshima Gardens, visit the rebuilt Hiroshima Castle or journey to the exquisite sacred island of Miyajima, just a few miles offshore for a serene and uplifting walk through its dense forests and see the extraordinary Itsukushima Shrine.
