Edinburgh Attractions
Some of the city's greatest treasures can be found in Old Town along the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Palace, the city's oldest structure and Holyrood Palace, Queen Elizabeths Scottish residence.
Edinburgh Activities
Scottish National War Memorial - The Memorial commemorates some 100,000 Scots who died in World War II.
Holyrood Abbey - Located next to Holyroodhouse Palace, the abbey was once the site for royal marriage ceremonies and the burial place of Scottish royalty. It was founded in 1128 by David I; according to legend he built it as a penance for hunting on a holy day. Until 1880 debtors and delinquents found refuge here once they had crossed the sanctuary line.
St. Giles High Kirk - It is also known as St. Giles Cathedral. John Knox, leader of the Protestant Reformation in Scotland, preached his fiery sermons here from 1559 to his death in 1572. Built between the 14th and 15th centuries, the church was greatly altered in the 16th century. Its dominant feature is the crown-shaped spire. The colors of famous Scottish regiments decorate the interior.
Royal Museum of Scotland - It is ranked among the finest of Britain’s comprehensive museums. Its exhibits range from prehistoric times to the space age; they encompass decorative arts of the world, archaeology, ethnography, natural history, geology, technology and other sciences.
John Knox Museum - This 16th-century house was built by the famous preacher and theologian. The oak floors and ornately painted ceiling are original. Displays illustrate the building and development of the house from its beginning to the present.
Scott Monument - Located in East Princes Street Gardens, it features a marble statue of the author at its base. Towering above is a 200-foot gothic spire adorned with characters from Scott’s novels and poems.
Scottish Whisky Heritage Center - Located on the Castle Hill section of the Royal Mile, it has exhibits offering a lowdown on all aspects of Scotland’s national beverage. View a film showing the process of production and blending, or look in the shop which provides a good idea of the range and diversity of whisky with dozens of different brands for sale.
St.Andrews - Known foremost as a mecca for golf enthusiasts, the town of St. Andrews offers visitors attractive alternatives to golfing. It is home to the legendary Old Course Hotel, with its famous Road Hole Grill. The distance to St. Andrews is 55 miles each way. A visit is possible by private car/van.

Invergordon is the port for Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands and junction of many routes. Over the centuries, Inverness was often the focal point of clashes between Highland chiefs, and the Crown. Today the town is a popular tourist attraction as well as a gathering place for the clans of the surrounding area. Enjoy the picture-perfect scenery and perhaps an opportunity to chat with a Highlander eager to introduce you to his fabled land and its rich heritage.
Invergordon Activities
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery - The exhibits may be worth viewing as they provide a good general overview of the development of the Highlands. Loch Ness Monster Exhibition - Located 14 miles southwest of Inveress, the exhibits tell the legend of the monster from 565 AD to the present. Displays include equipment used in the hunt, a scale model of the loch and models of various investigations. Films and narrations augment the exhibits.
Just 10 miles off the coast of Northern Scotland is Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, an area rich in wildlife and archaeological sites. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850, and the site reveals that Orkneys were inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Attractions
The islands are virtually a museum of prehistoric times. Rock circles, cairns, standing stones, ancient tombs and prehistoric villages are scattered about, gaining these islands international recognition. The Orkneys are also a paradise for bird watchers, with a myriad of puffins, eider ducks, whooper swans and arctic terns. These birds, as well as many other species, nest here during the summer months.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Activities
St. Magnus Cathedral - The massive, Norman-style cathedral was dedicated by its founder, Earl Rognvald, to his murdered kinsman, Earl Magnus, in the 12th century.
Bishop's Palace - Only the walls and the tower of this 12th-century residence, built for Bishop William of Old, still stand. A narrow, spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, affording a great view of the cathedral and across Kirkwall's rooftops.
Earl's Palace - Better preserved than the Bishop's Palace, the neighboring Earl's Palace dates to 1600. Its style blends medieval fierceness with the ornate elements of French Renaissance architecture. It features dank dungeons, massive fireplaces and a magnificent central hall. Excellent exhibits explain the use of the various rooms; they provide insight into the life of the earl and the manner in which he conducted his ruthless business.
Highland Park - A good mile south of town is this "most northerly legal distillery in Scotland." In operation for 200 years, it closed only once, during World War II when it was used as a military store.
A cruising destination for nearly 100 years, Geirangerfjord offers one of Norways most breathtaking combinations of massive mountains, towering waterfalls and scenic waterways. In Geiranger, farmers work along narrow mountain ledges, oblivious to the heights.
