Naples the diva of Italy. Voluptuous, vivacious and vibrantly alive. All the marvelous sights, scents and sounds of Southern Italy are here. It's where pasta was invented and where the first pizza was tossed. And in the ashen ruins of Pompeii, see where ancient Romans came to play, only to be lost under Vesuvius fire and fury.
Naples Attractions
While you're in the area, you'll want to visit Pompeii, one of the most famous excavation sites in the world. A thriving city 1,900 years ago, it was devastated by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. when 30 feet of volcanic ash and pumice stone covered it. Enter Pompeii by the sea gate and take a short walk to the hub of the city: the Forum. View the lavish temples and porticoes that lay beneath the ash for centuries.
Naples Activities
Take a short boat trip to the entrancing Isle of Capri, and explore Capri Town. Wander its quaint streets and explore its shops and cafés. Discover the Gardens of Augustus, overlooking the famous Faraglioni of Capri and Marina Piccola.
Take a ride up the Amalfi Coast. With its ocean views and beautiful vistas, it's one of the most breathtaking stretches of road in the world.
Walk around and spend an afternoon getting to know the picturesque city of Naples.
Located roughly between Salerno and Sorrento, Amalfi was already an important maritime republic in the Middle Ages. In fact, the Amalfi Tables represent the oldest maritime code in the world, which were observed throughout the Mediterranean until the late 16th century.
Today, Amalfi is one of the most popular resorts and stopovers along the famed Amalfi Drive, Italy's celebrated corniche that hugs the mountainous coast and carves its way through sheer rock. Opulent villas, cloaked in brilliantly colored bougainvillea, hide behind high walls and wrought-iron gates. Waves pound against the steep shoreline and tortuous bends challenge a steady stream of tourist vehicles. Around every hairpin turn spectacular scenery awaits. Spread across the slope of the steep Lattari hills, the town itself boasts a superb setting and plenty of charm. The small, inviting center features several attractions that should not be missed. Of particular note is the duomo, also known as Cathedral Sant'Andrea, a marvel of ancient Arab-Moorish architecture. The church dominates the lively piazza, full of shops and crowded with residents and tourists at any time of day. Ruggedly beautiful and enchanting Amalfi will guarantee you a delightful introduction to Italy’s famed coastline.
Amalfi Activities
The Duomo, named in honor of St. Andrew (Sant’ Andrea), this splendid cathedral evokes Amalfi's rich past. Reached by climbing a flight of steps, the church is characterized by its black and white façade and mosaics. It dates from the 11th century, although the present structure has been rebuilt. The Duomo is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (admission charged).
High above Amalfi is the Capuchin Monastery with a beautiful cloister offering superb views. The 12th-century monastic complex now houses the Cappuccini Convento Hotel; it can be reached via a lift from the coastal road.
Boasting a superb location at 1,155 feet above sea level, the Rufolo Gardens are famous for their beautiful landscaped grounds, framed by umbrella pines and full of colorful blooms. It was this site that inspired Richard Wagner in his opera Parsifal. The gardens are reached following a 30-minute, winding drive to Ravello and a walk through this charming town perched high above Amalfi.
About a two-hour drive from Amalfi lies the archaeological site of Paestum. Its temple ruins are among the finest remains of Greek architecture on the mainland of Italy. Guests interested in visiting the site may want to arrange a trip by private car.
Between Messina and Catania, the town of Giardini Naxos is a fascinating mix of the ancient past, with its characteristic fishing village, and the new, with modern hotels; making it a perfect tourist destination.
Travelers arrive all year round, in the winter to enjoy the snow covered slopes of Mount Etna, and in the summer for the beautiful beaches and full range of water sports. For golfers there is the 16 hole Picciolo course. The Craft industries of Giardini Naxos are still alive with the production of carpets, terracotta, ceramics, and the famous ironmongery. Popular traditions are enthusiastically continued in every day life.
The famous Sicilian cart is symbolic of the town. Among the local customs are: fishing for costardelle; grape pressing, "A Matrissa"; musical performances by the Naxos Folk Group and the famous Sicilian puppet shows, "l'opera dei pupi". Not to be missed: the Archeological Museum of Giardini Naxos, which houses a wealth of remains which were found in the old town.
In 1530, Charles V of Spain granted the island of Malta to the Knights of the Order of St. John. Many impressive 16th-century limestone buildings and fortifications from the Knights have endured, helping make the city of Valetta simply magnificent to experience today.
Valletta Attractions
Explore the city's main square and pass many of its ancient buildings. Then head to St. John's Cathedral, founded by the Knights of the Order of St. John during the 16th century. Today the cathedral is the final resting place for many of the knights - their headstones line the cathedral floor.

Montenegro is a country with deep blue sea, crystal clear rivers, mountains that reach the sky, dense forests, and beautiful lakes. It is bordered on the southeast by Albania. On the south, it is separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Its western neighbors are the former Yugoslav republics of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The old town of Kotor is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in this area of the Mediterranean. It has succeeded in maintaining its original form, typical of towns from the 12th-14th centuries. The only car in the old walled section is a replica of a small Fiat Cinquecento with a mini-trailer, used to collect the trash. The narrow streets and squares, along with numerous medieval monuments, helped earn Kotor a place on UNESCO's World Heritage list.
World famous Roman core of the Old City makes Split one of the most interesting places to see. Roman core belongs to the UNESCO protected heritage of the world. Today, Split is a popular vacation spot, a sophisticated centre of activity in Dalmatia, boasting numerous art galleries, concert halls and theatres.
Split Activities
The most important attraction and a must see is the Old Town within Diocletian's Palace. Its sights are covered on both tours, but if you decide to explore independently be aware that sightseeing has to be on foot.
Located in Gripe Fortress on a hilltop east of the Old Town, the Maritime Museum features an interesting exhibit of wartime maps, photos, artifacts and scale models. Captions are in Croatian.
In the past 40 years Rovinj has developed from a fishing village into a real tourist center thanks to its picturesque surroundings, its pleasant Mediterranean climate and its cultural-historical values.
Rovinj Attractions
Feel the enchantment of the town in its narrow medieval streets and warm Mediterranean setting. The main Church of St. Euphemia keeps relics of the saint and presents one of the most beautiful Baroque achievements in Istria. From the church plateau there is a wonderful view of the open sea and numerous islets in the distance. A visit to the Rovinj Town Museum and the town's many galleries will complete your cultural experience.
Trieste is a city and port in northeastern Italy right on the border with Slovenia. Trieste is located at the head of the Gulf of Trieste on the Adriatic Sea. It is capital of the autonomous region Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trieste province. Trieste flourished as part of Austro-Hungarian Empire during the period 1857 - 1918 when it was Central Europe's prosperous Mediterranean seaport and its capital of literature and music. Today, Trieste is a border town par excellence. The population is an ethnic mix of the neighboring regions; The dominant local Venetian dialect of Trieste is called Triestine. This dialect and Italian is spoken in the city center whilst Slovenian is spoken in several of the immediate suburbs. Italian and the Slovenian language are considered autochthonous to the area. There is also a fair number of German-speakers too.
Trieste Activities
The Castle of Miramare was built from 1856 to 1860 to a design by Carl Junker on the orders of Archduke Maximilian. The Castle gardens provide a setting of outstanding beauty with a variety of trees, chosen by and planted on the orders of Maximilian, that today make a remarkable collection.
The Castle of San Giusto - in which several rooms, including the Sala Caprin, are open to the public - houses a Museum displaying historical weapons and is regularly used for the staging of exhibitions, events and, in the summer, open-air shows. A walk on the Castle ramparts and bastions gives a complete panorama of the city of Trieste, its hills and the sea.
n the 6th century a great hall of worship of the Cathedral of San Giusto was built on Roman propylaca, using part of the existing structure. Perhaps the entrance to a monument, this was commonly known as the Capitoline Temple, as a pyramidal altar with the symbols of the capitoline triad (Jove, Juno and Minerva) had been found inside it. Among the works of historical interest in the basilica are the apsidal mosaics depicting Our Lady of the Assumption and San Giusto, laid by master craftsmen from Veneto in the 12th-13th centuries. The small 14th-century church of San Giovanni (the old baptistry) on the left and San Michele al Carnale on the right, by the entrance to the Museum, complete a fine Medieval churchyard.
The Roman Theatre lies at the foot of the San Giusto hill, and faces the sea. The construction partially exploits the gentle slope of the hill, and most of the construction work is in stone. The topmost portion of the amphitheatre steps and the stage were presumably made of wood. The statues that adorned the theatre (which was brought to light in the '30s) are now preserved at the Town Museum. Three inscriptions from the Trajan period mention a certain Q. Petronius Modestus, a person who was closely connected with the development of the theatre, which was erected during the second half of the 1st century.
In the whole Trieste province there are 10 speleological groups. The Trieste uphill (Altopiano Triestino), the geographical area of the Carso placed in the Italian territory, guess approximately 1500 caves of different size (67 more than 99 m deep). Among the most famous there is the Cave of Trebiciano (350 m deep) where at the bottom flow the Timavo River and the Grotta gigante the world biggest tourist cave.
Venice is the essence of romance. Along the Grand Canal, the city's "main street," you will see row upon row of Gothic-Renaissance homes and palaces. Most are hundreds of years old and house priceless works of art. Dozens of delicate bridges lead the visitor from one wonder to the next: The Basilica of St Mark, the Palace of the Doges, and the remarkable collection of modern art assembled by Peggy Guggenheim in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni.
Venice Attractions
Probably the most famous site in Venice is St. Mark's Basilica. Built to enshrine St. Mark's body in the 9th century, it was rebuilt in the 11th century with a new, spectacular edifice. The interior is clad in wonderful mosaics and holds statues, icons and its famous horses, brought to St. Mark's after the 4th Crusade in 1204.
Venice Activities
Explore the Doge's Palace, the official residence of the Venetian ruler, founded in the 9th century. See its famous Bridge of Sighs, linking the palace to the state prisons
Take a walking tour through the quaint cobblestone streets and across the endless Venetian bridges to discover the intimate details that make Venice
so unique.
Enjoy a gondola ride through the canals as you relax and absorb the surroundings
Campanile is the brick bell tower that stands in Piazza San Marco. The present structure is a reconstruction of the original, which stood for 1,000 years before it collapsed in 1912. An elevator can be taken to the top, affording views of the Lido, the lagoon and even as far as the Alps on a clear day.
Art lovers will not want to miss this magnificent museum, Galleria dell’Accademia. It boasts the most extraordinary collection of Venetian art. In addition to priceless masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Paolo Veronese and Titian, there are paintings of 15th- and 16th-century Venice that show how amazingly little the city has changed since then. The Accademia is open every day of the week, but usually requires standing in line to enter.
