About Budapest
This enchanting and exotic capital of Hungary straddles the banks of the Danube and is divided into two distinct parts, traditional Buda and more modern Pest. Budapest is aptly called "Paris of the East," for its beautiful evening illumination and reflected lights in the Danube's waters.
Budapest Attractions
The old city features amazing examples of architecture such as Buda Castle, the baroque Parliament building, Chain Bridge and Matthias church, where the coronation ceremonies of Hungarian Kings were held. Gellert Hill, high above the city, offers not-to-be missed views.
Budapest Activities
Everyone can find their choice of sports in Budapest. The most popular place in Budapest for sports is the Margaret Island - even the Prime Minister of Hungary is often seen jogging on some early mornings with his entourage.
Hungarians have always been avid sports people: during the history of the summer Olympics, Hungarians have brought home 460 medals, of which 158 are gold. The top events in which Hungarians have excelled are fencing, swimming, canoeing, wrestling and track & field sports.
Their affinity to water sports is unmistakably due to the presence of the Lake Balaton and the Danube, which have provided ample practice grounds since the beginning of times.
Beside classic sports, recreational modern sports such as bowling, pool billiard, darts, go-carting, wakeboarding and squash are very popular in Budapest, and extreme sports are also gaining ground.

The City of Belgrade is the founder, financer and organizer of many regular annual cultural events. Most of the authors from all fields of culture and art live and work in Belgrade, the center of culture and art of Serbia and Yugoslavia. Belgrade has also hosted the famous world authors and performers in the fields of music, theatre, film. The only Serbian Nobel laureate, Ivo Andri, has created some of his greatest literary works right here, in Belgrade.
The Western Carpathians are the lowest of the three ranges and are fragmented by many deep structural depressions. They have historically functioned as "gates," which allow easy passage but can be readily defended. The most famous of these is the Iron Gate on the Danube.
Iron Gate Attractions
A spectacular narrow gorge between the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains, the Iron Gate is one of Europe's most dramatic natural wonders. In 1972, a hydroelectric dam was completed aiding in river navigation.
Svishtov (also known as Svistov) is a town in northern Bulgaria, located in Veliko Tarnovo Province on the right bank of the Danube. Svishtov is identified with the Roman colony Novae mentioned by Ptolemy. The exact site appears to have been Staklen, to the west of the present town, which has gradually moved eastward since the 16th century, when it was almost destroyed in the Turkish wars.
Rousse is the city of northeast Bulgaria on the Danube River south of Bucharest, Romania. Founded as a Roman fortress, it is today a major port and industrial center.
Giurgiu is the capital city of Giurgiu County, Romania in the region once called Vlasca. It is situated amid mud-flats and marshes on the left bank of the Danube. Three small islands face the city, and a larger one shelters its port, Smarda. The rich corn-lands on North are traversed by a railway to Bucharest, the first line opened in Romania, which was built in 1869 and afterwards extended to Smarda.
Bucharest is Romania's capital, with a population of over 2.3 million. It is rich in culture and history. Founded more than 500 years ago, it is a natural starting point for visits to the country. During the 1930's its tree-lined boulevards and fin de siecle architecture earned it the nickname the "Little Paris." There is even an Arc de Triomphe on the handsome Soseaua Kiseleff, itself longer than the Champs Elysees and alive with blossom in the spring. Despite the massive reconstructions of the 1980s, Bucharest remains a Garden City, leafy and pleasant, with pavement cafes open in the warm summer, and boating on its lakes and rivers.
