About Southampton
Explore the charms of Englands third-largest seaport. Explore Southamptons archaeological sights - modern Southampton is built on the ruins of ancient Roman and Saxon ports.
Southampton Attractions
Visit the Southampton Maritime Museum, which chronicles the history of Southampton and its significant role as a port for ocean liners, the most famous being the Titanic. Not to be missed is the exhibit "Titanic Voices," where visitors can hear the story of the tragic voyage in the words of survivors and those touched by the tragedy.
Southampton Activities
Browse the halls of The City Art Gallery, which was named the "National Fine Art Museum of the Year" in 1994.
Take a guided tour of Old Southampton and walk along the medieval town wall.
Explore the more than 300 acres of open park space in The Common. It's an amazing collection of flora and fauna, so remarkable, in fact, that it has been designated a site of special scientific interest.
La Rochelle was once known as the French Geneva and today the comparisons are still being made. Thanks to its famous city lights, La Rochelle has been called the "City of Light," much like Paris itself. But to anyone visiting this bustling seaport, La Rochelle has its distinct charm.
La Rochelle Attractions
La Rochelle's main feature is the "Vieux Port" ("Old Harbour"), which is at the heart of the city, picturesque and lined with seafood restaurants. The city walls are open to an evening promenade. The old town has been well-preserved. From the harbour, boating trips can be taken to the Île d'Aix and Fort Boyard. Nearby Île de Ré is a short drive to the North. The countryside of the surrounding Charente-Maritime is very rural and full of history. To the North is Venise Verte, a marshy area of country, criss-crossed with tiny canals and a popular resort for inland boating. Inland is the country of Cognac and Pineau.
La Rochelle Activities
Aquarium. One of La Rochelle’s top tourist attractions houses around 10,000 arranged over two floors. Downstairs is a shop, the atlantic room, the Oceanic area with its barracuda, jacks and rays, and the Mediterranean cave home to spirographs and a giant octopus. Upstairs is the shark tank which allows visitors the chance to get close to many different species of this impressive animal. There are also Caribbean tanks, an Indo-Pacific room, the Lagoon, an amphitheatre and an interactive learning area.
Ile de Re. A short distance from the centre of La Rochelle and accesible by bus is the Ile de Re. The island is popular with local residents who wish to escape the city. The town of Saint Martin de Re which is considered the island’s capital has some fine restaurants and wineries. Elsewhere Ile de Re boasts miles of cycle paths, vineyards, deserted beaches, pine woods and salt water marshes. Musee de Beaux-Arts. Housed in an 18th century Episcopal palace, the museum displays pieces from the 15th to the 20th century and includes works by artists such as Maillol, Leger and Fromentin.
City Hall. This fine 14th century structure is built in a Gothic style. The City Hall can only be visited by a guided tour which must be booked in advance, but it is well worth it for the fine Henry II staircase and Jean Guitton’s marble desk.
Towers. The port of La Rochelle is guarded by several towers. The oldest one is Tour St Nicholas which was constructed between 1371 and 1382. This must-see attraction offers superb views from the top of the tower over the old town and the island of Ile d’Oleron in the distance. Close by is the Tour de la Lanterne constructed between 1445 and 1446. Formerly a lighthouse, the tower was also used as a jail until the 19th century.
Musee du Nouveau Monde. This museum celebrates La Rochelle’s 300-year long relationship with the New World when many products such as fur, coffee, sugar, cocoa and slaves were traded in the town. The exhibition tracing the 1682 discovery of the Mississippi Delta by La Salle is particularly interesting.
Sixty-one miles up the Garonne River, lies the port of Bordeaux, the capital of France´s wine country. The Romans were the first to introduce grapes into the region, and by the 14th century Bordeaux was producing over one million cases a year. Journey through the hilly countryside to the picturesque village of St Emillion and taste the wines that have made this region famous.
Bordeaux Attractions

Visitors from all over the globe come here to learn about the wine-making process - from growing the grapes to the harvesting, fermentation and bottling of top-quality wines. The city’s single most important economic activity is centered around the marketing and exporting of the region’s prestigious wines. Many travelers come here for the single purpose of visiting the cellars of esteemed châteaux and sampling the product. However, one has to keep in mind, that the title "château" can mean anything from a palatial residence to a basic winery. There are thousands of wine châteaux scattered through the countryside, ranging from very modest family establishments to celebrated properties – but all are dedicated to producing the area’s renowned wines.

Biarritz is located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in the Aquitaine region. It is adjacent to Bayonne and Anglet and 11 miles (18 kilometres) from the border with Spain. It is in the traditional province of Labourd in the French Basque Country.
Vikings who invaded Gascony in 840 settled in Biarritz, which later participated in the whaling trade. Biarritz is a Basque name with locative suffix -itz (cp. Isturitz) attested Bearriz in 1170, Bearids in 1186, Bearritz in 1249. The Scandinavians settled in the area above the Gardague Beach. It has been suggested (disputedly) that the remaining Vikings became "Agots", a social group in Gascony not allowed to mix with the population at large. Segregation among these communities—there were many in Gascony and Navarra— disappeared only in the early 20th century.
Biarritz has long made its fortune from the sea: as a whaling settlement from the twelfth century onwards, in the 18th century doctors recommended that the ocean at Biarritz had therapeutic properties, inspiring patients to make pilgrimages to the beach for alleged cures for their ailments.
Biarritz became more renowned in 1854 when Empress Eugenie (the wife of Napoleon III) built a palace on the beach (now the Hôtel du Palais). The British royal family regularly took vacations in Biarritz: European royalty such as Queen Victoria, Edward VII, and Alfonso XIII of Spain were frequent visitors.
Biarritz's casino (opened 10 August 1901) and beaches make the town a notable tourist centre for Europeans, and East Coast North Americans. The city has also become a prime destination for surfers from around the world, developing a nightlife and surf based culture.
Biarritz Attractions
Biarritz features:
the Asiatica Museum, which houses a significant collection of Asian art primarily from India, Nepal, Tibet, and China.
The Museum of the Sea, which has 24 aquariums containing sharks and seals
The annual Biarritz Surf Festival founded in 1993 at the Côte des Basques is one of the premier surf events in Europe and longboarding events in the world.[1]
St-Martin's Church, constructed in the 12th century, and restored in the middle of the 16th century.
The Russian Orthodox Church, which was constructed in the 19th century for visiting Russian aristocrats, with its famous blue dome.
The Chapelle Imperiale built for Empress Eugenie, which has an intricately decorated roof interior, and elegant wall tiling. She also built a palace on the beach which is now the Hotel du Palais
A Museum of Chocolate, which explains its history and manufacture.
Two large Casinos, the Barriere and the Bellevue, on the waterfront by the Grande Plage.
Cliffs and lookouts lie to the west of the main beach.
Bilbao, capital of Provincia de Vizcaya in northern Spain, consists of old and new sections connected by several bridges spanning the Rio Nervion. The old part of the city occupies the east bank of the river, and its modern offshoot, dating from the late 19th century, sits opposite. In 1983 a flood severely damaged the old section of Bilbao, but it has since been restored.
Bilbao Activities
Visit the Guggenheim Museum, which its architecture itself is a sight to see. Inside the Guggenheim, are great collections of modernist art.
This charming Spanish city is poised on a peninsula that juts into the blue-green sea and is ringed by sandy beaches. Travel to the nearby pilgrimage site of Santiago de Campostela, a town that;s been described as "poetry in stone," with buildings dating back to the Middle Ages.
La Coruna Activities
Visit the magnificent Tower of Hercules, the city's landmark since the 2nd century.
Explore the fishermen's houses' galleries, the reason why La Coruña is called "The City of Glass."
Explore the charms of Englands third-largest seaport. Explore Southamptons archaeological sights - modern Southampton is built on the ruins of ancient Roman and Saxon ports.
