About Tromso
The capital of the Arctic is a lively and beautiful city packed with culture and history, and surrounded by mountains, fjords and islands.
It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the second largest north of the Arctic Circle in Sápmi (following Murmansk). Most of Tromsř, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsřya, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Substantial parts of the urban area are also situated on the mainland to the east, and on parts of Kvalřya—a large island to the west. Tromsřya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsř Bridge and the Tromsřysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvalřya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.
The city centre of Tromsř contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsř. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer. Some of Norway's best-known musicians, Torbjřrn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin grew up and started their careers in Tromsř. Noted electronic musician Geir Jenssen also hails from Tromsř.
Svolvaer is the unofficial capital of Lofoten and the administrative centre of Vågan Municipality (9200 inh) in Nordland County, Norway. This small town (population on 1 January 2005: 4,197) is a favourite starting point for tourists visiting the islands. Svolvaer was given township privileges in 1918, but this was discontinued following a merge with neighbouring municipalities in 1964. Township was declared again in 1996. Approximately 200,000 tourists visit Svolvaer each year. There is a small airport near the town, and Svolvaer is a port of call for Hurtigruten.
Trondheim exudes history from every pore of her stave churches and cobbled streets. Take in the splendid Nidaros Domen, built in 1066 over the grave of St. Olaf. Its the most magnificent cathedral in Scandinavia. The Royal Familys vacation palace is here too. Its the largest wooden building in Norway.
Trondheim Attractions
Stretching 120 metres (400 ft) into the sky, the Tyholt Tower was built by the Telecommunications Authority for modern radio and telecommunications. This is a must for tourists as it offers a spectacular view of Trondheim and the surrounding area. It also features a rotating restaurant 74 metres (243 ft) above ground.

The Hospital Church was built in 1705 and still serves as the insitutional church for the Hospital to this day
Kristiansten fort was built 1681-84 after the great city fire in 1681, and now proudly stands guard over the city centre

Sverresborg is a fascinating museum of cultural history, with open-air areas and indoor exhibitionsThe Archbishop´s Residence is the oldest secular building in Scandinavia
The coastal town of Alesund is the commercial capital of the More og Romsdal district. But more important, it is noted for its characteristic Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) buildings, which some claim make Alesund one of the most beautiful towns in Norway. Today, narrow streets are crammed with buildings topped with turrets, spires and gables that bear decorations of dragonheads and curlicues. As one of the few remaining Art Nouveau towns in the world, in 1998 Alesund was awarded the coveted Houens National Memorial Prize for the preservation of its unique architecture.
Alesund Activities
Atlantic Sea Park - Located about two miles west of Ålesund, this unique Sea Park is built into a large stretch of coastal area with fishing stands, hiking trails, bathing sites and outstanding diving venues. It features large aquariums teeming with ocean life from up and down the Atlantic. Fish feeding is daily at 1:00 p.m.
Ålesund Museum - The exhibits at this museum concentrate on the history of sealing, fishing, shipping, the fire of 1904, the German occupation during World War II and the town's distinctive Jugendstil architecture.
Ålesund Church - The church was built in 1909 in Norman style. It boasts splendid frescoes and beautiful stained-glass windows. The gable windows behind the organ were an inauguration gift from the German Emperor Wilhelm II.
Municipal ParkLocally known as Byparken, it features a statue of Rollo, which was presented to the people of Ålesund from the city of Rouen in 1911. The park also has a monument dedicated to Kaiser Wilhelm II who made major contributions to the rebuilding of Ålesund after the Great Fire in 1904.
Situated along the innermost arm of the Nordfjord, this picturesque village of western Norway is surrounded by some of Scandinavia´s most captivating scenery. Here lies the largest glacier in all of Europe, the Jostedal, towering nearly 6,200 feet over a deep valley. The green fields, serene lakes and cascading falls of this region are simply breathtaking.
Olden Attractions
Jostedalsbreen National Park covers an area of 1,310 square kilometres. Jostedalsbreen is the biggest glacier in mainland Europe. The national park also contains many other large and small glaciers.
Just 10 miles off the coast of Northern Scotland is Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands, an area rich in wildlife and archaeological sites. The Neolithic village of Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850, and the site reveals that Orkneys were inhabited as early as 5,000 years ago.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Attractions
The islands are virtually a museum of prehistoric times. Rock circles, cairns, standing stones, ancient tombs and prehistoric villages are scattered about, gaining these islands international recognition. The Orkneys are also a paradise for bird watchers, with a myriad of puffins, eider ducks, whooper swans and arctic terns. These birds, as well as many other species, nest here during the summer months.
Kirkwall, Orkney Islands Activities
St. Magnus Cathedral - The massive, Norman-style cathedral was dedicated by its founder, Earl Rognvald, to his murdered kinsman, Earl Magnus, in the 12th century.
Bishop's Palace - Only the walls and the tower of this 12th-century residence, built for Bishop William of Old, still stand. A narrow, spiral staircase leads to the top of the tower, affording a great view of the cathedral and across Kirkwall's rooftops.
Earl's Palace - Better preserved than the Bishop's Palace, the neighboring Earl's Palace dates to 1600. Its style blends medieval fierceness with the ornate elements of French Renaissance architecture. It features dank dungeons, massive fireplaces and a magnificent central hall. Excellent exhibits explain the use of the various rooms; they provide insight into the life of the earl and the manner in which he conducted his ruthless business.
Highland Park - A good mile south of town is this "most northerly legal distillery in Scotland." In operation for 200 years, it closed only once, during World War II when it was used as a military store.
On the rugged, mounainous Isle of Skye, renowned for the woolen goods produced from its counless sheep, visit Dunvegan Castle, fortress home of the MacLeod clan for some 750 years.
Oban is a centre for Gaelic history and culture. As you approach the town you will see McCaig's Tower, a replica of the Colosseum of Rome, built in 1900 by a local banker. Argyll, home of the Clan Campbell, was once the ancient Scottish Kingdom of Dalriada. In mist-shrouded Kilmartin Glen, one of the most beautiful in Scotland, see the ruins of Dunadd Castle, where a weathered rock inscribed with a boar head marks where Scottish kings were crowned until the 11th century. Nearby, stone circles attest to a civilization dating back 5,000 years. Then travel to Loch Fyne, where the present head of the Campbells, the Duke of Argyll, makes his home at Inverary Castle. The 19th century castle was admired by Sir Walter Scott as a fine example of the Scottish baronial style.
