About Tromso
The capital of the Arctic is a lively and beautiful city packed with culture and history, and surrounded by mountains, fjords and islands.
It is the largest urban area in Northern Norway and the second largest north of the Arctic Circle in Sápmi (following Murmansk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsøya, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Substantial parts of the urban area are also situated on the mainland to the east, and on parts of Kvaløya—a large island to the west. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.
The city centre of Tromsø contains the highest number of old wooden houses in Northern Norway, the oldest house dating from 1789. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. The city is a cultural centre for its region, with several festivals taking place in the summer. Some of Norway's best-known musicians, Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge of the electronica duo Röyksopp and Lene Marlin grew up and started their careers in Tromsø. Noted electronic musician Geir Jenssen also hails from Tromsø.
Alta, the Town of the Northern Lights, is continously growing and developing, and has become a centre of commerce and service for large parts of Western Finnmark and North Troms. Finnmark College, the regional educational centre, attracts around 2000 students from the Nordic countries and Russia. Alta's unique closeness to coast, inland, valleys, forests and plains, combined with a generous climate, makes it an excellent habitat for a great variety of plant and animal life.
Alta Attractions
Here are a few of the places of interest and activities in and around the Town of the Northern Lights: Alta Museum - UNESCO's World Heritage Site, received "European Museum of the Year Award" in 1993. Alta Museum is located near Northern Europe's largest and richest rock carving range. Northern Light Iglo is a hotel made in ice. Even the glasses in bar are made out of ice! Enjoy a truly special experience and unexpected comfort by spending a night at the Northern Light Iglo. You get a warm sleeping bag on a bed of snow, with comfortable reindeer skins, surrounded by ice and snow. The Northern Lights Observatory called Haldde at Mt. Sukkertoppen, built in 1899, the world's oldest permanent northern lights observatory. Sautso - Alta Canyon. Visit Northern Europe's largest Canyon! Destination Alta and The Tourist Information have more information and organises guided tours to the Canyon and the Power Station and dam.

Hammerfest – the world’s northernmost town – is one of the most important travel destinations in North Norway. Over 250,000 tourists visit the town annually. The borough has approx. 9200 inhabitants, and a surface area of about 844 km2. It covers parts of the islands of Sørøya, Kvaløya and Seiland, and since it was awarded city status in 1789, it has been the natural centre of the region. Trade and industry is characterised by fishing, fish processing, the Snøhvit field (LNG), service industries and tourism.
Hammerfest Activities
The Meridian Column - This beautiful memorial was raised in 1856 to commemorate the first project to measure the exact size and shape of the earth. The memorial is in the Fuglenes area of Hammerfest.
Music pavilion - An example of the great architecture of old Hammerfest, the pavilion was built by the local artists Eva and Knut Arnesen
The reconstruction museum invites you to an exiting and modern exhibition of the forced evacuation and 'scorched earth' policy in Finnmark and north Troms during World War II and the post-war reconstruction of these counties.
Norways northern-most settlement is the picturesque fishing village of Honningsvag. Cross the empty expanse of Arctic tundra to the North Cape. There you will stand atop a a 1,000-foot sheer granite cliff at the literal European end of the earth.
Honningsvag Attractions
Almost all visitors to this area come specifically to visit the North Cape. While in Honningsvag, you might enjoy the Nordkapphuset, where the museum features interesting displays depicting the local history and culture.
