Since being Cultural Capital of Europe in 1990, the city has increased its tourist activities. From the huge list available, there is the Burrell art collection, the architectural designs of Glaswegian Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow Science centre, cinemas, theatres, concert halls, and much more.

On the north coast is the geological phenomenon of the Giant's Causeway, where a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago formed columns of layered basalt. Ancient legend suggests this was the work of the giant Finn McCool, the Ulster warrior and commander of the king of Ireland's armies.
Fort William is the largest town in the highlands of Scotland and second largest settlement behind the city of Inverness.
Fort William is a major tourist center with Glen Coe just to the south, and Glenfinnan to the west, on the Road to the Isles. It is an important center for hillwalking and climbing due to its proximity to Ben Nevis and many other Munro mountains, marketing itself as the "Outdoor Capital of the UK". It is also well known for its nearby famous Downhill Mountain Bike Track and its connection to the West Highland Way from Glasgow and the Great Glen Way; a walk/cycle way from Inverness to Fort William through the Great Glen.
Situated in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands lie northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway. The archipelago is composed of 18 islands covering 545 square miles, and there are 687 miles of coastline.
The beautiful Faroe Islands, which actually belong to Denmark, are a haven for birdlife. It's a world where millions of birds visit untouched natural habitat. It's a world were the sun hardly sets for 3 months in summer.
With a history of trading that dates back to 1589, this quiet fishing village on the eastern coast of Iceland lies on Bulandsnes peninsula near Bulandstindura-a pyramid-shaped mountain thought to be a source of spiritual energy. Visit Langabud, a log house built in 1790, which also houses the local folk museum-or journey to Papey Island, home to thousands of sea birds, including the colorful puffin.
The Westman Islands are a group of 15-18 islands, depending on how they are classed, and about 30 skerries sand rock pillars, located off the mainland's south coast. The islands were formed by submarine volcanic eruptions along a 30-km long fissure lying southwest to northeast. The largest island is Heimaey, 13.4 km2. Most of the islands have steep sea cliffs, and are well vegetated. Bird hunting and egg collecting are traditional to the islanders culture.
Surtsey is a volcanic island off the southern coast of Iceland. It was formed in a volcanic eruption which began 130 meters below sea level, and reached the surface on 14 November 1963.
According to legend, Ingolfur Arnarson threw pillars engraved with images of pagan gods overboard from his Viking ship, vowing to settle wherever the pillars washed ashore. They landed at Smoky Bay where the first settlement of Reykjavik was established around 870 AD. The name Reykjavik, or "Smoky Bay," refers to the numerous geysers emanating from the thermal springs beneath the capital. Today, Reykjavik is a modern city but its past is preserved at many fine museums including the Arbaejarsafn.
