About Frankfurt
Frankfurt has a rich history dating back to the early Middle Ages. A city where Holy Roman emperors were crowned and the first German parliament assembled, Frankfurt is also the birthplace of Goethe and one of the joint capitals of Charlemagne´s empire.
Frankfurt Attractions
See the Cathedral where the coronation of German kings and emperors took place, and the 18th-century Church of St Paul.
Located in the heart of the Rhine wine region, Mainz has played many historic roles. Due to its favorable location on the mouth of the Main River and being close to the mouth of the Nahe River, Mainz gained economic and political strength. Under Roman rule, it served a key part of the Roman Empire's northern defenses and during the Middle Ages, it served as a major trade center. Later, Mainz became home to printing pioneer Johannes Guttenberg.
Mainz Attractions
Learn more about the invention of the printing press with a visit to the World Museum of Printing or enjoy the Roman-Germanic Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Historical River Navigation. Visit beautiful St. Stephen's Cathedral featuring Chagall's world-famous stained-glass windows or enjoy a local wine in a cozy tavern.
Located on the Rhine River, Rudesheim is the chief center of the Rhine wine industry. The famed Drosselgasse, a tavern-lined, cobblestone street, attracts locals and visitors alike. Half-timbered medieval houses, narrow streets, and old inns give the town the flavor of the Middle Ages. Visitors to the town may wish to see the 9th century Bromserburg, the oldest castle on the Rhine or Seigfried's Mechanical Music Museum housing one of the world's largest collections of self-playing instruments.
Rudesheim Attractions
Situated at the beginning of the Rhine gorge, it is known for its excellent local wines with only Rhine vineyards situated on the southern slope.
This 2,000-year-old city at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers is the cultural and business center of the Middle Rhine region. History buffs can explore the Neoclassical Residence Schloss, the Prince Elector´s palace; the Deusches Eck, a settlement founded by the German Order of Knights in 1216; and Ehrenbreitstein, the oldest fortress in Europe.
Ludwigshafen is your gateway to a choice of three excursions. Visit Heidelberg, the perfectly preserved medieval city nestled in the Neckar River Valley along Germany’s Castle Road. Discover the iconic red sandstone Heidelberg Castle and Great Vat, an 18th-century 49,000-gallon wine cask. For a more active adventure while in Heidelberg, join a guided hike up the Philosopher's Path, aptly named during the Romantic Period, and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city. Or ride along the river Neckar to the medieval town of Ladenburg where you’ll have some free time to explore the shops and quaint Marktplatz. Alternatively, you can visit one of Germany’s oldest cities, Speyer, known for the largest Romanesque cathedral in Europe.
Heidelberg is located approximately 80KM to the south of Frankfurt and is sometimes described as being at the heart of Europe. Given that European borders are in a constant state of flux this is probably no longer true! Heidelberg isn't a large place. Visitors generally spend most of their time in the old town. The old town starts at Bismarckplatz, which is the main hub for trams and buses, at one end of the Hauptstrasse. The old town then runs along the Haupstrasse all the way down to the the Karlstor, past the castle. The Haupstrasse was pedestrianised in 1976. Generally you won't see too many cars in the old town. If you're staying outside of the centre, then all you need to do is hop on a bus or tram that is going in the direction of Bismarckplatz. The Hauptstrasse runs parallel to the river Neckar.
About 2,000 years ago, the Romans discovered the hot, healing springs here and turned them into one of their most popular baths. The Roman baths rapidly developed into a place which was not only fashionable because of its medicinal springs. During its belle epoque, Baden-Baden became Europe's summer capital. Brahms worked here, Dostoyevsky
frequented the casino and Kaiser Wilhelm took the waters regularly for many years.
The diversity of the cultural offerings provides recreational value to an international public: the Baden-Baden hilharmonie, the Theater Baden-Baden, the State Art Hall, glleries and museums on the one side, the casino, the golf course, high class boutiques and superb Baden Alsace cuisine on the other.
Whatever your pleasure-bathing like the Romans, enjoying Baden's wines, discovering traces of the Russians or floating with Europe's biggest balloon fleet and enjoying the bird's-eye view of this changing, charming landscape-Baden-Baden deserves a visit.
Kehl is a town in southwestern Germany in the Ortenaukreis, Baden-Württemberg. It is located on the river Rhine, directly opposite the French city of Strasbourg.
The village of Kehl was first mentioned in 1038. In 1338 the first permanent bridge between Kehl and Strasbourg was completed. In 1678 the city was taken over by France, as it was considered to be part of the defence system of Strasbourg. Hence the village was transformed into a fortress in 1683 by the French architect Vauban.
The multicultural city of Strasbourg exhibits both French German influence due to its location along the Rhine River at the border of both countries. The old streets of "Petit France" with wooden houses and picturesque canals seem to make time stand still. The carefully restored Cathedral of Notre Dame contains a combination of architectural styles, and is most recognized for its 465-foot tall, graceful spires. Another landmark is the 18th century Chateau des Rohan, which houses three of the city's major museums.
This European town on the Rhine gave the Breisgau region its name. St. Stephan's cathedral on the high basalt cliffs and the Rhine gateway with museum hark back to the time when the noble Staufer family built the fortress to defend the town. The Badischer Winzerkeller is Europe's biggest producer-seller of wine. Also a centre for many important sekt producers.
Breisach Attractions
Breisach's most prominent landmark is the Cathedral of St. Stephanus. Visible from any part of the city, this landmark towers prominently high above the Rhine.
Lying in the heart of the vineyards of the Alsace, Colmar is a city made for strolling. Its famed historic district is now a vast pedestrian zone, with medieval houses boasting carved gables, galleries with beautiful bannisters, and doors adorned with lavish woodwork.
Colmar Attractions
Things to see include the Heads House (1609), the 15th-C. Customs House, the Dominican Church (with its famous "Virgin in the Rosebush" by Martin Schoengauer). The old "Quartier des Tanneurs" (Tanner's District) and the "Petite Venise" (Little Venice) canal district are great places to walk through cobbeld streets past the old houses. The Unterlinden Museum, which houses the prized Issenheim Altarpiece by Mathias Grünewald has a good collection of sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages.
Gateway to the Swiss Rhineland, Basel is ideally situated on the Rhine at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Switzerland. As you walk the cobblestone streets of the Old City, retrace the steps of the brilliant scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts, where you´ll see the paintings of Picasso, Dali, Kandinsky, and Mondrian, among others.

The famous Lion Monument - Löwendenkmal and the Glacier Garden, a geological phenomenon left over from the Ice Age make for remarkable viewing as do the Pilatus, Dietschiberg or Gütsch mountains peaks surrounding the city.

Switzerland's largest city is surprisingly compact, with a wealth of churches, museums, and cobbled streets. More than half of Zurich's 41 museums are free, from the wide-ranging Swiss National Museum, with treaures from prehistory to the present, to the tightly focused Beyer Museum of Time and the Museum Strauhof, strong on James Joyce artifacts and memorabilia. A free list of museums can be picked up at the tourist office.
Zurich's premier magnet is the Old Town, a maze of medieval streets on both sides of the Limmat River. Among the most ancient and charming byways in this part of town are Neumarkt, Rindermarkt, and Predigergasse--narrow streets with building, some of them more than 700 years old, housing galleries and small shops brimming with stylish jewelry, clothing, crafts, works of art, and books. Augustinergasse, lines with 17th- and 18th- century houses, curves up to St. Peter's, the city's oldest parish church, also notable for having the largest clock face in Europe. If you don't insist on top-name brands, it's possible to do well buying classy-looking Swiss watches (under $100) and chocolate at department stores such as ABM, EPA, and Migros. For gift boxes of beautifully packaged chocolate truffles ($9-$25), try Schurter, on Niederdorfstrasse, also a fine spot for relaxing over a cup of hot chocolate or coffee ($2.50) and slice of cake ($2-$4). Swiss Army knives (starting at $12.50--and generally about half the price of those sold in the States), jewelry, wooden toys, and cheese boards can be purchased at Heimatwerk, with shops throughout Switzerland, but value-conscious
shoppers flock to the Zurich store, where an entire room is devoted to sales merchandise.
Countryside is close at hand in Zurich. Every 30 minutes, a train departs from Zurich's Hauptbahnhof (train station) for the summit of Uetliberg Mountain, some 1,500 feet above the city. Plan your departure from Zurich so that you can have an early lunch in the train station, at Les Arcades (a plate of bratwurst is $12). Instead of boarding the train for the return trip after you've admired the view from Uetliberg, take the easy under-two-hour walk along the mountain ridge to Felsenegg, where you can then hop on a cable car for the quick trip back to Zurich.
