About Amsterdam
A center of European commerce since the 15th century, Amsterdam is a lively city of canals, museums and entertainment. Perhaps you'll choose to explore this Dutch capital by canal boat. Visit the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmseum, with its collections of Flemish masterpieces.
Amsterdam Attractions
Life in Amsterdam is centered on its many canals. So the best way to see the city is aboard a glass-topped canal boat, gliding through the town center. Discover the elegant merchant mansions and rows of waterside warehouses, which once housed the riches brought from the Far East. Look for the 17th-century "Skinny Bridge" and Amsterdam's narrowest house as you make your way past beautiful old churches to the Anne Frank House. Journey by the Jordaan, the old French Quarter that is now a popular artists' haunt with a wide assortment of cafés, antique shops, boutiques and galleries.
Amsterdam Activities
Visit the world's largest flower auction in the city of Aalsmeer. Visit a Delft Blue Pottery factory to observe the fascinating process of transforming a shapeless piece of clay into a beautiful work of art. Then tour the Hague, seat of government for all the Netherlands.
Head out to the countryside to see the quaint windmills in the authentic old village of Zaanse Schans.
Stop by the Rembrandt House, home to Rembrandt from 1639 to 1660. Inside is a collection of his engravings and drawings, as well as some of his personal belongings.
Modern Rotterdam is often referred to as a "wonder", because of its amazing Phoenix-like revival after bombs had virtually flattened Rotterdam on May 14, 1940. Highlights are the 180 metres tall Euromast which was built in the record time of 23 days, the impressive sculpture by Osip Zadkine entitled "The Destroyed City" and the town hall resplendent with its embellished facade in the style of the Flemis Neo-Renaissance.
Rotterdam Activities
The Havenmuseum shows the presence of the port of Rotterdam in the heart of Rotterdam.
The Maritiem Museum in Rotterdam offers a wealth of information about the shipping industry, both past and present.
The Openlucht Binnenvaart Museum offers berths to historical commercial (sailing) vessels in the Oude Haven area as well as parts of Delfshaven in Rotterdam.
Close to the Oude Haven on the Wijnhaven, you will also find the Mariniers museum. Here, visitors can learn anything and everything there is to know about the lives of 'our boys', the ships and the history of the Royal Dutch Navy.
The Wereldmuseum Rotterdam focuses on encounters and cross-cultural inspiration.
How can one live in a cube house? In Rotterdam you will find the answer. Curiously angled cube-shape apartments have each been turned to balance on one corner on the top of tall beams. One of the cube houses, the so-called fully furnished Show Cube, is open to the public.
The Blijdorp Zoo is a voyage of discovery, full of surprising encounters that takes you to different continents in one day.
The Euromast, a 607-feet tower visible from miles around, gives a superb view of the city of Rotterdam and the largest port in the world.
At its beginning, Nijmegen was an ancient Roman military camp, which later grew to the real city. Today Nijmegen is a big city, with some points of interest for a visitor as the museum of African culture - Africa Museum and the National Bicycle Museum, Velorama (Velorama - National Fietsmuseum) exhibiting 250 authentic veteran cycles.
Two thousand years have left their mark in Bonn, tracing its development from a Roman camp into the settlement known as "Villa Basilica," and on through the Baroque era's Electoral Palace, which today houses the University.
Much of its history, ancient and modern, can be read in Bonn's cityscape. In the north, for instance, traces of the Romans can still be found, and in the south, providing a modern contrast, soars "Lean Eugene" - the high-rise Parliamentary Office Building and symbol of high politics.
As a 2000-year-old city situated in the heart of Europe, Bonn offers its guests a wealth of sights. Especially worth seeing are the Basilica in the heart of the city, the venerable Münster in which kings were crowned between 1314-46; the two-storied church of Schwarzrheindorf; and Baroque Poppelsdorf Palace.
Bonn is renowned as the city of music. Ludwig van Beethoven first saw the light of day here in 1770. Paying homage to the great composer are Bonn's international Beethoven Festivals. His birthplace, with museum, is a must attraction. It is one of the characteristic Baroque town houses from the Electoral era.
With the National Art and Exhibition Hall and the new Art Museum, as well as numerous other collections, Bonn boasts a museum scene that is second to none.
But the City of Beethoven has even more to offer, such as the lovely Rhine riverbank promenade leading past the Beethovenhalle (concert hall), the old Customs House and Villa Hammerschmidt - all the way to Bad Godesberg, the diplomatic quarter. From here one has a splendid view of the fabled Siebengebirge with Drachenfels, Drachenburg and Petersberg. Bonn - Your destination on the Rhine.
A well known wine growing centre situated on the Mosel River. In the centre is the Market surrounded by color-washed half-timbered houses and the remains of medieval walls including the Ender Gate built in 1332. The well-restored castle which looms above the town was severely damaged in 1689 during the "Orleans War" of 1688-97.
Following the course of the Moselle river for more than 100 miles is the beautiful Moselle Valley. The prettiest town in this popular wine-producing region, Cochem occupies the site of one of the valley´s earliest settlements. The medieval-style Reichsburh Castle, which dominates the town from atop a hill, is worth seeing, as is the Old Town with its cobblestone streets and halftimbered houses.
Cochem Attractions
A favorite respite amid the splendor of the Moselle Valley, Cochem offers an idyllic setting amid vine-clad hills, and a neo-Gothic castle. The little town is graced by three fortified gates, quaint narrow alleys and half-timbered houses. Visit Reichsburg Castle, perched high above the town. Originally built in the 11th century, the castle was destroyed by French soldiers in 1689 and reconstructed in the 19th century.
This 2,000-year-old city at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers is the cultural and business center of the Middle Rhine region. History buffs can explore the Neoclassical Residence Schloss, the Prince Elector´s palace; the Deusches Eck, a settlement founded by the German Order of Knights in 1216; and Ehrenbreitstein, the oldest fortress in Europe.
Sankt Goar is a town on the west bank of the Middle Rhine in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis (district) in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde of Sankt Goar-Oberwesel, whose seat is in the town of Oberwesel.
Sankt Goar is well known for its central location in the Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2002. Above the town stand the ruins of Burg Rheinfels, one of the castles for which the Middle Rhine is famous, and across the river lies the sister town of Sankt Goarshausen with its own castles, Katz and Maus (“Cat” and “Mouse”). The famous Lorelei rock is close-by, slightly upstream on the opposite bank.
Located on the Rhine River, Rudesheim is the chief center of the Rhine wine industry. The famed Drosselgasse, a tavern-lined, cobblestone street, attracts locals and visitors alike. Half-timbered medieval houses, narrow streets, and old inns give the town the flavor of the Middle Ages. Visitors to the town may wish to see the 9th century Bromserburg, the oldest castle on the Rhine or Seigfried's Mechanical Music Museum housing one of the world's largest collections of self-playing instruments.
Rudesheim Attractions
Situated at the beginning of the Rhine gorge, it is known for its excellent local wines with only Rhine vineyards situated on the southern slope.
Located in the heart of the Rhine wine region, Mainz has played many historic roles. Due to its favorable location on the mouth of the Main River and being close to the mouth of the Nahe River, Mainz gained economic and political strength. Under Roman rule, it served a key part of the Roman Empire's northern defenses and during the Middle Ages, it served as a major trade center. Later, Mainz became home to printing pioneer Johannes Guttenberg.
Mainz Attractions
Learn more about the invention of the printing press with a visit to the World Museum of Printing or enjoy the Roman-Germanic Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Historical River Navigation. Visit beautiful St. Stephen's Cathedral featuring Chagall's world-famous stained-glass windows or enjoy a local wine in a cozy tavern.
The multicultural city of Strasbourg exhibits both French German influence due to its location along the Rhine River at the border of both countries. The old streets of "Petit France" with wooden houses and picturesque canals seem to make time stand still. The carefully restored Cathedral of Notre Dame contains a combination of architectural styles, and is most recognized for its 465-foot tall, graceful spires. Another landmark is the 18th century Chateau des Rohan, which houses three of the city's major museums.
This European town on the Rhine gave the Breisgau region its name. St. Stephan's cathedral on the high basalt cliffs and the Rhine gateway with museum hark back to the time when the noble Staufer family built the fortress to defend the town. The Badischer Winzerkeller is Europe's biggest producer-seller of wine. Also a centre for many important sekt producers.
Breisach Attractions
Breisach's most prominent landmark is the Cathedral of St. Stephanus. Visible from any part of the city, this landmark towers prominently high above the Rhine.
Lying in the heart of the vineyards of the Alsace, Colmar is a city made for strolling. Its famed historic district is now a vast pedestrian zone, with medieval houses boasting carved gables, galleries with beautiful bannisters, and doors adorned with lavish woodwork.
Colmar Attractions
Things to see include the Heads House (1609), the 15th-C. Customs House, the Dominican Church (with its famous "Virgin in the Rosebush" by Martin Schoengauer). The old "Quartier des Tanneurs" (Tanner's District) and the "Petite Venise" (Little Venice) canal district are great places to walk through cobbeld streets past the old houses. The Unterlinden Museum, which houses the prized Issenheim Altarpiece by Mathias Grünewald has a good collection of sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages.
Gateway to the Swiss Rhineland, Basel is ideally situated on the Rhine at the crossroads of France, Germany, and Switzerland. As you walk the cobblestone streets of the Old City, retrace the steps of the brilliant scholar Erasmus of Rotterdam. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts, where you´ll see the paintings of Picasso, Dali, Kandinsky, and Mondrian, among others.
