Attractions

The Gamla Stan is the oldest part of Stockholm and a popular attraction. Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with beautiful buildings dating from the 13th through the 18th centuries. Today they house boutiques, restaurants, cafés, and clubs.

Swedish crystal and ceramics, art glass, wooden toys, dolls and clothing are favorite buys. A good selection of gifts can be found in Stockholm's big department stores, such as NK and Ahlens. A Value-Added Tax (MOMS) is levied at the rate of 25% on most articles. Guests living outside the European Union can get a tax rebate of about 15-18% on purchases over SEK 200 at stores bearing the tax-free shopping insignia. Be sure to ask the store to fill in a form; you can get the appropriate tax rebate in cash prior to departing Europe.

Currency

The unit of currency in Sweden is the Krona (SEK). Traveler's checks and credit cards are also widely used and accepted here.
