The area were now Gouda lies, was still covered with swamps and wet land around the year 1000. One of the most important rivers cutting through that area was the "Gouwe" river. Alongside its banks the first settlers came to live during the 11th and 12th centuries. Most people came to build a house around the fortified castle of the family "Van der Goude". The small city began to grow and named itself Gouda" (after the "Van der Goude" family).

Attractions

Gouda is known not only for its cheese but also for its well-preserved Gothic Town Hall, located in the center of Holland's largest market square. Also notable is St. John's Church with its exquisite painted-glass windows. Gouda is also famous for its pipes and candles, which the town has been producing for centuries. Take a stroll through Gouda's narrow streets and be sure to visit De Moriaan, the world's largest pipe museum.
