Located at the mouth of the Göta River, Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, is the busiest port in Scandinavia. Arriving by ship, your first impression of this immense port and shipyard may be somewhat misleading, but beyond this development you will soon discover one of Sweden’s prettiest and friendliest cities. Its town center, crisscrossed by canals, allows pedestrians to enjoy the many traffic-free streets.

Attractions

The city's most interesting and delightful section is the Old Town, defined by the central canal. Main points of interest in this area include the garrison overlooking the harbor, the town hall, the cathedral and several warehouses left from the East India Company. Spacious and yet intimate, with a compact downtown area, Gothenburg is a popular place to shop and explore on one's own. Don't miss a chance to stroll along the town's favorite boulevard, Avenyn, lined with boutiques and outdoor eateries. Summer days are warm and the people are friendly, so enjoy all the city has to offer or leisurely discover the charm of outlying areas.

Activities

Maritima Centrum - This indoor and outdoor museum features warships, boats and a floating restaurant. Padden Boat - This one-hour water tour departs from the main tourist office. It is a great way to see the city. Historical Museum - Excellent ethnological and archaeological collections are housed in this 18th-century headquarters of the East India Company. Nya Elfsborg Fortress - Surviving buildings from this 17th-century fort now contain a museum and café. It can be reached by excursion boat.

Shopping

Crystal, porcelain, stamps, coins, hand-knit sweaters, rya rugs, amber and jewelry are popular gifts from Gothenburg. Local branches of the large department store chains, NK and Ahlens, offer a good selection of an array of merchandise. Look for shops displaying the "Duty Free" sign.
