Alta, the Town of the Northern Lights, is continously growing and developing, and has become a centre of commerce and service for large parts of Western Finnmark and North Troms. Finnmark College, the regional educational centre, attracts around 2000 students from the Nordic countries and Russia. Alta's unique closeness to coast, inland, valleys, forests and plains, combined with a generous climate, makes it an excellent habitat for a great variety of plant and animal life.

Attractions

Here are a few of the places of interest and activities in and around the Town of the Northern Lights: Alta Museum - UNESCO's World Heritage Site, received "European Museum of the Year Award" in 1993. Alta Museum is located near Northern Europe's largest and richest rock carving range. Northern Light Iglo is a hotel made in ice. Even the glasses in bar are made out of ice! Enjoy a truly special experience and unexpected comfort by spending a night at the Northern Light Iglo. You get a warm sleeping bag on a bed of snow, with comfortable reindeer skins, surrounded by ice and snow. The Northern Lights Observatory called Haldde at Mt. Sukkertoppen, built in 1899, the world's oldest permanent northern lights observatory. Sautso - Alta Canyon. Visit Northern Europe's largest Canyon!
